I think we need more talent in STEM. We're losing out to other fields, such as Medicine and, God forbid, Law. Any initiative that aim to make STEM more attractive to a greater talent pool is a good thing, no?
It's true we have very few female software developers. Many here dream up reasons for this, and few provide any evidence. I don't think that is particularly helpful. A skewed gender distribution within a field is not in itself evidence of any particular reason for that skew. If you're in STEM and you disagree you should have paid more attention in your University courses. All you're showing is your own bias.
Maybe it is possible to support initiatives that make the industry more attractive to women while at the same time refraining from alienating males already in the industry by essentially calling them sexist pigs? I think so.
