Uh so can someone tell me if iTunes is still Unbearable/Blindingly White still? or did they tone it down a bit?

Hehe this is Palms Business plan.
I mean at least Apple is buying their device.

Apple don't need to buy Palms to block them. They just need to keep updating iPods and iPhones. It's Palm that has to buy iPods to figure out how to imitate them.

everybody wants the all in wonder box; itunes, internet/email, netflix/amazon-stream, dvd/bluray, games (I'd imagine some people would be complaining if it didnt play nintendo, ps3, and xbox games), oh and they want it be able to play pirated movies... don't forget it has to be under $100

I'll take it from this comment that you think that everybody who supports open standards is a pirate?

Anybody who wants support for a superior format just has to be plying dodgy wares, right? The MKV standard just encapsulates a video codec such as h.264 and adds a bunch of value added stuff, which makes it much more desirable for those of us who want more options than simply handing over our credit cards to Apple every time we want to watch something.

If I'm a proponent of pirated material for being in favour of open standards, then I guess that would make you an unpaid Apple shill for your unquestioning compliance to the platform. Sweeping generalisations kinda suck, don't they?

Beyond that I agree that the interface is a big improvement.

Anyone notice Settings > HDMI Output ??? I do not remember that from before. Has a choice of RGB High, RGB Low, CyBr ... and auto.

It’s been there since 1.0. So nothing new there. :)

I have to use RGB Low on my Samsung HDTV or the black levels are all washed out. So, I discovered that feature early on.

I think you might be missing my point. ATV needs to evolve into more than something that plays music and videos. I think it needs to turn into more what the PS3/XBox 360 is with integration with the iPhone/Touch.

Hm not sure if a move into the gaming console sector would be smart. The field is already full of 3 vicious players, with only one of them making decent money. Plus, you need support by the gaming companies, exlcusive titles etc pp. Apple has no experience in that field, and MS already destroyed the odd billion in order to have have-baked success.

I'd say they should rather buy Nintendo instead of developing their own gaming console.

is it just mine, or did this update disable letting me drag an image from my web browser to the artwork box in the Get Info..... it won't do it now. wth.

It's nice they updated it,

Now it's time for Hardware, please!!!!!!!!!!

Ya, I was expecting this update soon, but I was also expecting new hardware to accompany it.

All I want now is 1080P iTunes Extras and a hardware refresh and I will FINALLY be set with my media and entertainment center!!! :D

Does anyone know if this has updated all the guts to QuickTime X. I'm guessing yes, but I haven't heard anything.

This may have already been brought up (I didn't read every page) but has anybody noticed that if you stream from iTunes that :apple:TV gives the "Loading..." message whenever you enter a shared folder now (Shared Movies, Shared Music, etc). This is awful and slows down everything. The one advantage that I can see is that it is now easier to sync the sharing feature with new content, but is this really necessary? I had 2.4 before this and it only gave the "Loading" message the first time you entered a "Shared" menu.

I also noticed that quite a few tv and movie trailers fail to start now; sometime I can get them by exiting and going back to the trailer, but sometimes not. This is on the same network connection that I have been using all along. Perhaps it is just that the servers are busy from everybody trying out the new version.

1080i is not higher quality than 720p.

Are you kidding? If quality is measured by resolution, the math says it all:
1080i is 1920 pixels wide * 1080 lines tall = 2,007,360 pixels
720p is 1280 pixels wide * 768 lines tall = 983,040 pixels

If you make an argument about "i" vs. "p", some people then suggest cutting the 2M pixel number in half, but that still yields 20K more pixels.

In a real world comparison, TNT and CBS (1080i) HD tends to almost always better than ESPN and ABC (720p) HD to my eyes. How about yours?

If you measure picture quality by other means- other than resolution- then you can make the case for anything being better than anything else, like the recurring one about how human eyes can't see the difference (so apparently my eyes are not human).

A friend of mine, big time Apple fanboy purchased this Apple TV a few months back. I got to play around with it and I had to say I'm pretty disappointed. I like my iPhone (like, not love) and I enjoy my Macbook but I just thought Apple TV was a big disappointment.

I bet Steve Jobs had a bet with Steve Ballmer saying Jobs could sell any turd with an :apple: logo and rabid fanboys would buy it up. That turd is Apple TV.

are they ever going to fix smart-playlist syncing. you have to turn off live updating for them to sync correctly.

the appleTV does what it does, i think it's great at it.

just think through itunes you are merely thinking of a move a few clicks and you are watching, that's the experience what you are paying for.

No. While a lot of people think the current :apple:TV hardware is way overpriced considering how old and underpowered it is for what it is meant to do, anyone can observe other boxes with hardware capable of granting many of the more popular (hardware upgrade required) :apple:TV wishes that can be bought for under the current price of :apple:TV. That means the technology is out there for a next-gen :apple:TV that could address a lot of the more popular hardware upgrade wishes in a box that costs about the same as :apple:TV does now.

As I know it, the big 10 wishes for next-gen :apple:TV are:
  • full 1080p HD capability- the current hardware is capped at a limited incarnation of 720p (just barely HD)
  • built-in BD player to kill 2 birds with one stone
  • built-in DVR functionality to kill 2 birds with one stone
  • open hardware expansion options (like normal USB) so that other hardware companies can offer add-on functionality if Apple doesn't want to kill X birds with 1 stone.
  • open development/API/app store so that it can have widgets or iphone-like apps
  • full codec support (without hacks)- if Quicktime can play it, :apple:TV should be able to play it too
  • content source support beyond iTunes: netflix, hulu, etc
  • central server functionality so that it can store all your iTunes & iPhoto content in one place and all the computers in the house could draw from those single libraries
  • much greater internal storage options- probably a bigger box for 3.5" SATA drives, enabled (Apple-endorsed) external storage options, or network (don't have to leave my computer on all the time) storage options
  • more robust hardware (no UI stalls: quick, crisp, snappy)

Even though I wouldn't care much for some of these features personally, I'd pay about $499 for this package if it could run under the :apple:TV interface. TODAY!

There are lot of these capabilities in competitor boxes, but those usually fail with a poor UI. Apple has a great UI but underpowered, long-in-tooth hardware. This whole space is Apple's for the taking. They just need to do it.

My Movies in Grid

I was hoping this release would put "My Movies" in a grid view... I hate scrolling forever....

Good job Apple on making only your devices syncing with your software. A certain company will now be looking for a way to hack in again.

The funny part is that Apple continues to claim that its content is "HD" despite it being a TENTH of the bitrate you get on Blu Ray and even less bitrate than an SD TV channel.

HD and bitrate are two different things. HD can be delivered with a low bitrate when using a very efficient codec. h264. But that not saying the BlueRay is not better quality-wise.
