Time for ATV to Grow Up

I'm glad that Apple hasn't abandoned the Apple TV, but it's really time for them to step things up and come out with a multimedia product that can do more.

I would think in roughly the same formfactor they could easily upgrade the Pentium-D @ 1GHz to a Core2Duo @ 1.6GHz and increase RAM from 256MB to faster 1GB-2GB RAM. And for video, the Nvidia 9400M would seem like a good choice.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but wouldn't these specs exceed what's in the PS3? And since it's running OS X (which should be upgraded to the same Darwin version as 10.6) I'm not sure why existing games for the Mac couldn't run on it. Come out with some software that turns the iPod Touch/iPhone into a controller too.

I'd also like to see it be able to run iPhone apps that you can control via your iPhone. To me, it doesn't really sound like the R&D for a product like this would take much effort, relatively speaking, and if it could play both iPhone apps and regular OS X games, it'd already have a decent game library to start with.

On top of that, work with the gaming companies to distribute their games over iTunes so you don't need an optical drive to install it. Although, I'd like to see a DVD/Bluray player available on the ATV.

This a joke? Not showing up for me.

From engadget:

"It took a reboot and a few tries for units around here to start seeing the new software was available, so feel free to give that "check for updates" button a workout, 'til then the official PR is after the break describing what your box is missing."

Front Row

I wonder if Front Row will be updated as well?

I hope so. Front Row is terrible. I actually liked the original version better because it at least organized TV Shows by season in a menu rather than one huge list (remotely) or by having the same show show up X times in the list (locally).

Also, it's kinda dumb that Front Row won't pick up album art when you are accessing a remote iTunes lib. ATV doesn't have that problem.

I've been playing with Plex on my laptop as I await my MacMini which is replacing one of my ATVs. Even though it's a bit rough around the edges, I'd like to see Front Row move more in the direction of this app.

seems like some of you hacked your :apple:tv

can some give me a link to the best website that makes the hack?

Depends on what you want.

To hack the device, you'll first need a patchstick: http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator

That will enable SSH+SFTP access and other things.

If all you want is playback AVI / WMV stuff, then you might wanna go with ATVFiles: http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/ATVFiles

If you want a completely different user interface with online media integration and whatnot, check out Boxee: http://www.boxee.tv (Personally, I don't like their interface that much but it's nice to watch the Daily Show this way)

The processor is also why Netflix can not stream to an aTv.

I agree that a hardware bump is desperately needed, especially with the number of HDV cameras out there, but NetFlix streaming to the device is certainly NOT a concern of Apple's; They're pretty much a direct competitor with the streaming service and I suspect the reason you haven't (and won't) see it is purely a business one.

For goodness sake, the Wii has enough power to stream NetFlix (purportedly.)

FINALLY I CAN USE EVENTS!!!!!

Photo viewing used to be such a pain in the ass. I hated making smart albums because my damn Apple TV couldnt view events.

Pandora at last?

Guys - is Pandora supported in the internet radio options? Or is is just the streams available in iTunes?
