I would think in roughly the same formfactor they could easily upgrade the Pentium-D @ 1GHz to a Core2Duo @ 1.6GHz and increase RAM from 256MB to faster 1GB-2GB RAM. And for video, the Nvidia 9400M would seem like a good choice.

It's actually a Pentium-M (the D would be a power hungry dual core)

The next hardware iteration will most likely have an Atom CPU paired with Nvidia's Ion platform. At least that would make the most sense.

Core 2 is too expensive and too power hungry, and in fact , if you have a GPU chipset that supports HD decoding in hardware, you won't need that much more CPU power than the current device has.

Awesome!!! Thank you Apple!! Too bad I'm out of town until Sunday.... Oh well, I'll have something to look forward to when I get home!!

How is the new interface better than the old one? It looks terrible to me. So much wasted space at the bottom. Very un-Apple like. I'll wait to see what those who actually download it think, but my initial impression from the sample screen shots is that I might stick with the existing software, as the existing interface looks so much better.

A thought just occured to me. What if Apple isn't updating the hardware because they built WAY TOO MANY of these little guys in the first production run? Trying to sell them all off before they make an update? Maybe they just went ahead and ripped the HDs out of some of them to have an intermediary upgrade....

Is there any indication of how many of these have been sold?

I'm pretty sure that is not the reason. The device was introduced 2.5yrs(!) ago, and not even SJ would be THAT optimistic to put millions of them in stock. Look how careful they are with ramping up iPhone production.

Just curious: why do you want new hardware? I mean, what new hardware-functionality would you like to see?

What I could see is bigger HD's, but other than that there's not much to change.

Just updated to 3.0. I like the new interface much better than the old 2.0 interface for the simple fact that’s it puts content I actually own at the top of the menu system.

I’m not sure I like it more than the original 1.0 menu.

From my initial impression, it doesn’t look like they bothered updating most of sub-menus or iTunes store pages. They’re still the same, but load much faster now.

I’ll be waiting for others to test out 720p 30FPS video and dig deeper into the update.

I still think it’s based on 10.4. The update seemed too small and installed too quick to completely redo the OS internals.

Faster processor?
720p @ 30fps?
1080p?

What is there not to upgrade?

The screenshot shows a rental with 5 days left to watch!!!

Either Apple negotiated longer rental times than the previous 48hr window or you can "pre"-rent things and your clock starts ticking when you hit play...

Umm... you've always had 30 days to watch a movie after renting it. However, when you start watching it, you have only 24 hours to finish watching it. The screenshot shows that they have 5 days left to START watching it.

Although, I'd like to see a DVD/Bluray player available on the ATV.

I used to disagree with you, but now my blu-ray collection has grown to 150 titles and it just flat out beats iTunes HD movies in sheer quality. To have everything in one box would be absolutely heavenly.

iTunes Extras, iTunes LP?

Am I the only who can't find iTunes Extras and iTunes LP content after updating? Works fine on iTunes, but nowhere to be found on my tv.

It is curious that there is so much “white (errr … black) space” in the new menu system. It’s almost like they plan on building out the new Internet category with more items.

I think it's definitely snappier, wasn't at first but i think it was re-syncing. not really sure the need for the front menu screen as when you click something it just goes to the old layout. my higher res videos seem to be crisper and less blotchy.

iTunes 9.0.2 is OUT!!

check s/w update!

iTunes 9.0.2 adds support for Apple TV software version 3.0, adds an option for a dark background for Grid View, and improves support for accessibility.

Dear macrumors, if you are going to report the story then please merge it with thread. thx!

cheers! :D

Just curious: why do you want new hardware? I mean, what new hardware-functionality would you like to see?

because of:
- overall lagginess of UI
- 1080p
- MKV playback (with a hacked box)
- more options for hacking (better TV recording with eyeTV etc)
- lower power consumption in standby

And please lift Apple TV's OS X flavour to Snow Leopard level or something. This is still Tiger! (not sure about 3.0)

the UI is completely unchanged for me (itunes anyway).

Not sure what everyone is talking about. Also can't find the dark view for grid view. Grid view is still slow and useless.

Give us 1080p or I'm going to the WD TV

Come on. Update the darn thing. It's already twice the price of the WD TV and can't even output 1080p, when the WD TV already can. Sure, it comes with 160GB of storage, but a 1TB external HDD only costs $100, so you'd still make a profit buying the WD TV + HDD versus 1 Apple TV.

Not to mention you can actually play normal files on the WD TV. No .MKVs for Apple TV? Geez, I'd just LOVE to convert all my HD files, that wouldn't take any time at all. Heaven forbid they provide native support.

I'm either going with a Mac Mini or more likely a WD TV.
