Just curious: why do you want new hardware? I mean, what new hardware-functionality would you like to see?

What I could see is bigger HD's, but other than that there's not much to change.

Simply put a 9400 in it and make it super cheap - Couldn't care less about the CPU/OS - and I don't think I'd be the only one jumping on these.

Can someone tell me why they cannot port this software over to Snow Leopard as an alternative to FrontRow?

Hi, I'm someone. It's 'cause they can't believe this old worn out hardware is still making them money. Look at the fanboy's. Can't wait to make the UI look a little different.

Hobby indeed. They spend no time on it and idiots still hand over their cash. The profit margin on this thing has to be astronomical these days.

The screenshot shows a rental with 5 days left to watch!!!

Either Apple negotiated longer rental times than the previous 48hr window or you can "pre"-rent things and your clock starts ticking when you hit play...

When you rent a movie from Apple TV, it will stay there for 30 days if you don't start watching it. Once you start watching, the 24 hour clock starts ticking. Given that, it is possible for the a rental to have "5 days left".....just rent it and don't watch it for 25 days!!! I doubt the rental agreement with movie studios have changed.

just downloading now (2 minutes, got to love a 50Mb connection) perfect timing too, getting one of the new Mac Mini's and a Drobo to store all our music and DVDs on.

My wants:

Gigabit ethernet
1080p support (I'd like to at least watch trailers and the like in 1080p)
NAS support for locating and retrieving my files on a NAS device.
SD card slot (why not? The new Macbook and iMacs have them)
ARM based product with a power switch (Atom is nice but this isn't a Mac)

I wonder if Front Row will be updated as well?

I was wondering the same thing.

Does anyone remember how long between :apple:TV 2.0 and Front Row 2.0?

Something that I see in the screen shot that I REALLY want in FR is movie genres. Having just a big long list of movies gets old, fast, when you have quite a few...

iTunes Extras, iTunes LP?

I'll say it again... the major feature in this update was SUPPOSED to be iTunes Extras and iTunes LP support, but it neither are anywhere to be found so far. Anyone having any luck with this?

The funny part is that Apple continues to claim that its content is "HD" despite it being a TENTH of the bitrate you get on Blu Ray and even less bitrate than an SD TV channel.

You may have to resync your media.

One thing I was wondering about, is the software upgrade going to enable HD youtube content?

Apple TV has security holes as well that need to be fixed.
They won't support Tiger forever.

the UI is completely unchanged for me (itunes anyway).

Not sure what everyone is talking about. Also can't find the dark view for grid view. Grid view is still slow and useless.

In iTunes, go to Preferences, and the General tab. About halfway down the window, on the right side, you'll see a dropdown for "Grid View". You can select Light or Dark.

Exactly, I am with you on this one. So many people claim to be holding off buying an Apple TV - for reasons of lacking features etc. But that's not really the truth of the matter - they are just making bogus excuses why they don't buy one for themselves. "I'd get it, but only when it supports 1080i" "Oh it has had 1080i for a while now? Oh, well, then I'll get it when it is has PVR functions" - that kind of impossible customer to please because they really just don't have any interest in the key functions. Some guys have no use for displaying photo's on the TV, and therefore do not appreciate that functionality.

Get Apple TV if you want to see your iPhoto on the TV and your own movies on the TV - for that it's totally worth it.

As a bonus, you can watch YouTube, video Podcasts, Rent movies (big bonus), and play music.

Hardware update please big time!

1080p
support for external drives for unlimited local storage
more codec support
faster processor

This software update is a good step forward. That means in my opinion a hardware update might be around the corner. Let's hope so.

Oh noes, you mean the ATV won't play my torrented movies? What am I to do....?

People, stop dreaming of more native codec support for the ATV. It's not going to happen. Ever.

Makes you wonder why the studios seem so anti-Apple. The :apple:TV is about the only media extender that doesn't support the most common forms of stolen media, Apple should be the blue eyed boys!

Uhhh. Front Row never got the Apple TV 2.0 Software Update. The current version of Front Row that ships with 10.6 Snow Leopard is based on the Apple TV 1.0 Software.

So, I wouldn’t expect the Apple TV 3.0 Software to make it into Front Row anytime soon.
