you can update the UI all you want, to me the apple tv is still crippled and will not be coming to home near me. i can think of a few all in one boxes that i would prefer over this at those price points. However, i have heard reports of safari being snappier

Anyone figure out iTunes LP? I have two of them in my library have it set to sync to apple tv can't figure out how to play them.

Interesting that "My Movies" is now the top of the sub menu for "Movies" ... used to be at the bottom under all of the iTunes drivel.

Yeah I like that too - friends who used my Apple TV would end up going into iTunes Movies or something. Guess now, they won't.

Don't really like the position of YouTube now though - I liked how it was an option on its own. Kind of showed off what it could do.

Just upgraded iTunes to 9.0.2. Can't tell if it's any better than 9.0.1, because it keeps crashing during launch. :(
Steve, look what they've done :eek:

What problem is that? No problems here...

Whenever I have that option selected, iTunes slows down to a crawl. It is not just me either, I've read that many people have this issue. I have a Mac, so it may be isolated to Macs only, but I'm not sure.

Apple will announce the purchase of a major production company and begin producing content for a new service dubbed the Apple Channel. It will include Movies and TV shows produced by Apple/Pixar/Disney and Independent film makers.

Steve Jobs is already one of the largest individual share holders of Disney and has Installed his CEO of choice. Then he has a small interest in Apple as well. I don't think he has much interest in a merger otherwise it would have happen already.

No it didn't. And posting this multiple times does not make it true.

Yes it did.

But I think the confusion comes from the display resolution versus the supported resolution of video files. The Apple TV's display resolution has previously supported 1080i (though I don't think 1080p). Currently, it does support 1080p based on the screenshots posted earlier. The video playback has been 720, and apparently has not changed.

Surely anyone who wants a decent front row is using Plex?

I'm repeating myself from the other AppleTV 3.0 thread, but as much as I want to like Plex enough to make it my default ten-foot interface, it lacks (and for me these are dealbreakers):

* AirTunes support
* iTunes store access (especially for renting movies)
* Ability to play iTunes-purchased (or rented) video content
* Any sort of good integration with non-music iTunes content (it depends on folder structure rather than using metadata)

Now, FrontRow doesn't give you #1 or #2 either, and overall it sucks. AppleTV rules above them both aside from the "minor" glitch that you have to run it on the AppleTV hardware (and no one has put forth the time to put together a hack that gets around this limitation with the newer editions of the AppleTV software).

Perfect solution: AppleTV interface replaces FrontRow in Snow Leopard running on a Mac Mini, hacked to launch into Boxee or Plex when needed (and the latter can already be done with Boxee). This should be possible if the AppleTV OS is ever upgraded to Snow Leopard. Or, and I'm dreaming in this case, make FrontRow so much better that you don't even need Boxee or Plex.

BTW for anyone interested, FrontRow can be hacked pretty easily to launch into Plex and/or Boxee, but for me personally I'm still sorely lacking some of the requirements I got into above.

Question:

I am now seeing an HD symbol next to Movie Trailers that I have downloaded from itunes. It displays as (720p HD) or (720i HD) next to the Trailer. I don't recall seeing this before. In fact, I don't think HD content synced from iTunes to the AppleTV before today.

I'm going to download a 1080i trailer and see if that syncs too.

it did on mine, several home made videos have always showed up on my atv as hd, the fact they are not hd is another matter:cool:

Wow that's a pretty major bug. I couldn't live without that option.

anyone have the download link for the update? I borked my ATV enough that I have to manually apply updates by doing a restore to the ATV drive from the appropriate disk image.

Thanks.

Scott

I hope so. Front Row is terrible. I actually liked the original version better because it at least organized TV Shows by season in a menu rather than one huge list (remotely) or by having the same show show up X times in the list (locally).

Also, it's kinda dumb that Front Row won't pick up album art when you are accessing a remote iTunes lib. ATV doesn't have that problem.

I've been playing with Plex on my laptop as I await my MacMini which is replacing one of my ATVs. Even though it's a bit rough around the edges, I'd like to see Front Row move more in the direction of this app.

The original Front Row was WAY better than the current one. This was one app that definitely took a step backwards. That and Spotlight. I miss the transitions and little sounds in the original Front Row that made it unique. The new one is less functional and boring.

Anyone work out how to play iTunes Extra material. Things I've tried

- Update itunes to latest version
- In itunes sync movies and tick include Itunes extras

No clue how to get this working.

Thanks

Nice update. However, it seems like the only changes are:

1.) A new top-level menu appearance.
2.) Internet Radio.
3.) Support for iTunes Music LPs and iTunes Movie Extras.
4.) YouTube HD video (rumored, I can't confirm this and I don't even know if it would be new to the 3.0 update).
5.) Option for viewing HD movie trailers (I think this is new, one other post noticed this also).

Otherwise, everything else appears to be the same (same Apple TV 2.0 menus and features).

I like the new top-level menus. The internet radio is very useful. The support for iTunes LP and Extras was expected but still nice.

Now I'm off to see if they've added 30fps at 1280x720 (doubt it, but that would be a huge improvement for those who are encoding their own 30fps material).

My Wish List for a future Apple TV Device

My Wish List for a future Apple TV Device
* AppleTV 3rd party Plugin/App Support (kinda like the ipod/iphone app store)
* 1080p
* Surround sound support, (More Audio/video codac support)
* Some basic media server capabilities (doesn't need to be fancy)
* Access to NAS devices, and USB attached Storage devices
* A power switch

Visualize what you just listed on a 10" device.;)
