Surely anyone who wants a decent front row is using Plex?
I'm repeating myself from the other AppleTV 3.0 thread, but as much as I want to like Plex enough to make it my default ten-foot interface, it lacks (and for me these are dealbreakers):
* AirTunes support
* iTunes store access (especially for renting movies)
* Ability to play iTunes-purchased (or rented) video content
* Any sort of good integration with non-music iTunes content (it depends on folder structure rather than using metadata)
Now, FrontRow doesn't give you #1 or #2 either, and overall it sucks. AppleTV rules above them both aside from the "minor" glitch that you have to run it on the AppleTV hardware (and no one has put forth the time to put together a hack that gets around this limitation with the newer editions of the AppleTV software).
Perfect solution: AppleTV interface replaces FrontRow in Snow Leopard running on a Mac Mini, hacked to launch into Boxee or Plex when needed (and the latter can already be done with Boxee). This should be possible if the AppleTV OS is ever upgraded to Snow Leopard. Or, and I'm dreaming in this case, make FrontRow so much better that you don't even need Boxee or Plex.
BTW for anyone interested, FrontRow can be hacked pretty easily to launch into Plex and/or Boxee, but for me personally I'm still sorely lacking some of the requirements I got into above.
