Both of my eSata modded atv's updated without a hitch first go around. Must have gotten lucky.

sidenote: love the new ui to be honest. much cleaner imo.

Atv 3.0

Great update I really like the changes, much easier to navigate and now internet radio.....:):)

Bit gutted the new UI is only on the home menu, not in the actual TV shows, movies etc themselves.

I'd have liked the beautiful artwork across the top of the screen like in the home menu and then going into a list.

Feels a bit sluggish and the new music artwork slideshow as a screensaver doesn't work... well it didn't work when I tried to preview anyway.

The new GUI is sexy, no denying that. Let's hope Apple continues this into all the other menus too.

I like it. everything seems better to look at even the menus that have stayed the same, more crisp looking(is that the right way to say it:rolleyes:)

One thing I've just thought of is that the fact the new 27" iMac supports video on, so plug one of these into it and boom, frontrow update :p

Does anyone know if it can use the iMac's sound configuration as I have my amp plugged into my iMac and would prefer not to have to switch it between my iMac / AppleTV, although my amp does support a second zone so I could do it that way but the less hassle the better :p

My 250GB ATV upgrade went smooth as silk. It got half-way through very quickly on the download and then slowed way down. I think that's because all of you piled on!

New update looks quite nice.

Cave Man - wish I had got my eSATA mod finished before this update... or is the Terminal commands going to be the same to image and partition the Apple TV? I was planning to use dynaflash's little app - if that'll work with 3.0. I know it is just software and it really won't have affected that, but just to make sure..

Yeah, this is what I currently use. I wish they'd do a Mac Mini with HDMI output as that would be perfect, but I imagine that'd just encroach waaayy too much on their Apple TV market.

It already has DVI out, right? And audio out, right? Why not just get a DVI+Audio - HDMI cable and stop complaining? I mean, people act like HDMI is some magical wire ... it's just DVI and audio in a single wire, and they sell cables to do that conversion just about everywhere.

No DVR = No Sale!

(and no, I don't want to start this argument again, I'm just venting...Yes, I know it's not going to happen)

I used to disagree with you, but now my blu-ray collection has grown to 150 titles and it just flat out beats iTunes HD movies in sheer quality. To have everything in one box would be absolutely heavenly.

There is iron in your words.

The apple website mentions that YouTube videos are now in HD - anyone confirm this? This would really be a great bonus as crappy quality YouTube videos before were an embarrassment. Can't wait to check out new UI tonight.

Yes, you can see YouTube videos in HD. Not quite as good as the streaming movies from iTunes (HD) but it is much better than the regular YouTube videos.

True. However, with the best codecs available (H.264) you still need a decent bitrate because of the sheer increase in raw, uncompressed bitrate that HD conveys. 1080p video alone has almost 5X the raw bitrate of DVD video. And don't forget the additonal bitrate for the newer audio codecs.

I think people should think of bitrate as key to dealing with compression artifacts. The higher the bitrate the better the potential quality post compression.

Where is the option to change the background in the Grid List view?

Interesting that "My Movies" is now the top of the sub menu for "Movies" ... used to be at the bottom under all of the iTunes drivel.

My Prediction

I'm going to make a prediction here:

Apple will release the Slate/Tablet in 2010

It will support in App purchase via iTunes as will AppleTV

Current Apps can be scaled to work on the new device (and AppleTV)

The Apps will be playable over LAN via Tablets or AppleTV

The slates can be used as wireless controllers to control the AppleTV or as control surfaces to play games head to head or connect via Bluetooth to iMacs and used as Touch Keyboards and Pads.

A more Far out prediction:

AppleTV will finally see a hardware update. It will (obviously) include faster processors, more RAM and a bigger hard drive.

It will include Display port and display port sharing.

It will not have Blu-Ray.

Netflix will be included when Apple announces a strategic alliance with Netflix in 2010. You will be able to Stream (netflix), Rent or Buy movies through iTunes and the AppleTV. There will be a Buy link to iTunes if the movie in your netflix queue is available to purchase from the iTunes store.

Apple will announce the purchase of a major production company and begin producing content for a new service dubbed the Apple Channel. It will include Movies and TV shows produced by Apple/Pixar/Disney and Independent film makers.

Apple and Google announce a free Nation wide high speed internet service with unlimited voice and data in 2011. They begin by rolling out WiMax (or some better derivative) in the largest market places and then begin to blanket the country by 2012. Qwest, ATT, Comcast, etc. lobby congress to forbid the creation of this joint company citing unfair competitive advantages.

My wants:

Gigabit ethernet
1080p support (I'd like to at least watch trailers and the like in 1080p)
NAS support for locating and retrieving my files on a NAS device.
SD card slot (why not? The new Macbook and iMacs have them)
ARM based product with a power switch (Atom is nice but this isn't a Mac)

Would have thought nVidia's tegra platform was a good choice for the next AppleTV.

Also want AppStore which would make more sense after a switch to ARM as well, plus AppTVStore Dev's have access to USB, so also want to see AppTV devices, for TV tuners and recorder, maybe even BlueRay or CableTV boxes.
