Um, is this a glitch or something?

That is a nice look. However, there’s a whole lot of other things that Apple are doing to mark the occasion. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Which includes wallpapers for iphone, ipad and mac, not mentioned at all in the article. here are the links in case anybody is interested.

Looks incredible! Interesting that I got a push notification about the new watch face and it was already downloaded, I wonder if they can push new watch faces silently or it was secretly included in the last software update.

I believe it was the latter: They secretly included this watch face in last week’s update and scheduled it to activate this morning. They’ve done that before with the pride watch faces. I’m surprised, however, that nobody found out about this earlier and activated it ahead of time by changing the date/time like many people did to get the pride watch faces sooner. What was certainly new was that they sent out a push notification about the new watch face this morning to everyone running iOS 15.2 and watchOS 8.3. I actually woke up to see that before I read any news about the new stuff including this watch face and the wallpapers for iPhone, iPad and Mac.

No that’s how it works. if you’re talking about the little black lines that’s because you have style II selected. Just change to style I and it will disappear.

New watch face is excellent. I understand why the color selections are what they are, and agree with the decision. But, I hope we get a variant of this we can customize in the future as well.

Yeah really makes yah wonder if Apple couldn’t do more of this silent updating of apps in the background.

But, it’s also entirely plausible that this was hidden in the last watchOS release, unlocked on a certain date.

I like the band and the face, too. I haven't worn my Apple Watch in months, though. I've been sporting my automatics. Maybe it's time to upgrade the band.

Does anyone know why Apple doesn't let developers / user community develop watch faces? It'd be so cool to open this up to everyone instead of limiting choices.

You can...but with the help of an app called "Clockology" (that's what I have, there are a few others)
Honestly I'm stunned Apple app store hasn't removed it.

But you can download a slew of faces, I have created a few using this app using this along with Photoshop.

*Some of these faces, like this example moving Kobe watch face (.mov file) ...which is cool, but can drain the battery fast. BUT there are plenty of other watch faces you can grab.

I like the face (and I don’t usually bother with the analog faces), but not loving the monochrome complications!

Every face has some sort of compromise which means no face is my go-to at this point - they either have too few complications, bland colours or just odd designs. I would be happy if we could get more customisation of the number/size of complications (in lieu of third party watch faces).

My guess is:

1) copyright - Apple doesn’t want to deal with developers infringing IP, like say a Star Wars themed watch face.

2) for every one great face created, you can be sure the App Store will be flooded with a thousand crappy ones. Being the only one who can release new faces may mean they come at a more glacial pace, but it improves curation and keeps the App Store more manageable.

So feel like a combination of pride (Apple thinks they know better than 99% of developers) and covering their backsides.

1) How would this be any different from allowing a desktop background on iPhone or Mac. Oh no I’m illegally using a copyrighted photo on my iPhone. Someone going to sue Apple?

It’s just Apple being Apple.

And it’s not the first time they ever do it. They did it before with the Pride watchfaces, only on those previous ocassions people did discover the hidden watch face before it was officially released and activated it ahead of time by tweaking the date and/or time on their devices. It’s surprising that didn’t happen this time.

What’s killing innovation with Apple Watch is the lack of competition. Right now no one makes a product that is on par with Apple Watch. Till someone does Apple can just keep doing whatever. Throwing out one watch face to the crowd of Apple Watch owners who are starving for anything is an insult. I love my Apple Watch but come on Apple you can do better

It’s one thing to change a background, it’s another to offer it for sale and profit from it, in the App Store at least. Why do you think all the wordle clones got purged last week?
