I was wondering why they did this via app instead of just through the website...

How much you wanna bet the app detects whether or not you're using an iPhone4, therefore preventing people from just going to Apple's website to apply for a free bumper when they don't even have the phone...

Well since it says thats what it does in the app description I would bet a ton :)

Hang on now, normally I'd agree with this stance but it's blatantly wrong in this instance.

It's a fix/appeasement for a hardware and usability issue, it's not just a generous offer from Apple to say thank you, so you should feel the right to be unhappy with the fix being offered.

Lets say this was a car, but when you grabbed the handle on the passenger side to get in it short circuited the electrics (impossible I know) and lets say as a fix for this the manufacturer offered a free replacement handle, but they only offered them in black or green, would you not be unhappy if you wanted a red handle for your red car? Or do you accept it because its free.

I know it's a different scenario as the bumper/case isn't part of the phone so colour doesn't have to match, but there should definitely be more choices to suit the needs of those who don't like the look of a black or clear case.

For the record I was hoping for a green bumper, but got the Belkin Micra Clear seeing as it wasn't on offer.

If Apple ever sell them again i'll buy a green bumper later down the line.

It's not a generous offer for nothing, but they already gave you the other option, RETURN YOUR PHONE.

You car comparison is so far off base I can't even wrap my head around it. Comparing my expectations of a company making me happy on my $30k+ vehicle purchase versus a $300 phone is a stretch. BTW, if you haven't noticed, your phone is black on the front and back, they aren't only offering pink cases here, which your argument alludes to.

I can't even order the black one, all the bumpers tell me "currently unavailable"
maybe it hasn't reached me or something? No matter where I look I cannot seem to select a bumper without it saying "currently unavailable"

Anyone else still able to order a black bumper?

Yeah I just ordered on right now. Went through.

As stated before....lame selection of cases for offer. LOOOOOOOOOOOVE that I have to wait 3-5 weeks to get one.

And how, exactly, would you suggest Apple solve the problem of supplying several MILLION cases that weren't expected to be sold? These things can't just magically appear out of thin air, you do realise that right? Same goes for selection, offering a hundred cases (as would seemingly have to be done to stop the whining) isn't practical when the objective has to be to produce as many as you can, as quickly as you can.

Look, I'm sorry to seem harsh but far too many people around here seem completely detached from reality. Regardless of whether or not you think this is the right solution or not, regardless of whether you, personally, are happy with the selection of free (and will therefore be claimed by almost everyone who owns an iPhone 4) cases or not, complaining about lead times for items that are going to be in stupidly high demand compared to normal predictions being a few weeks is just dumb.

The case is being offered for free to make up for a design flaw that affects some people. It does not matter if the phone cost $300 or $30,000. The fact remains that the phone does not work as it should for certain people. Apple is not obligated to do anything, but a company with their reputation and respect would be greatly damaged if they started pumping out inferior quality products and seeming not to care. That is why they are offering this solution.

People sometimes buy cases as a way to accessorize their phone, which is why there are so many color options out there. I do find it a little strange that Apple would not take this into consideration when selecting which cases they would offer as part of this deal.

That being said, aside from the proximity sensor problem, my iP4 works great and I have had it naked since I got it. I will get one of the free cases because who knows how long my luck will run, but I may just end up keeping it naked.

You're wasting your time with logic here...

Look, Apple should have had a selection of 20 cases produced for each and every iPhone 4 owner (in every color, mind you) and had them on standby just in case (no pun intended). Then, they should have hired a staff of several hundred thousand folks to hand deliver them to us within 24 hours of ordering.

How much would you bet that even if they did ALL that, we'd have people here whining?

To be fair though they were **** at producing and sending out bumpers before this program and antennagate.

What they really should have done is given a $30 credit to everyone so they could use it to get any case they wanted. That way if they wanted a more expensive case they would have that option and would just have to pay the difference.

Yup, agreed.

Me, too. I'm using the phone naked, as:

1. I have no reception issues (where I live).
2. I don't hold this phone remotely close to the described "death grip". Never have. The whole thing is a non-issue for me personally.

Nail on the head.

Except only a small percentage of cars are experiencing the short.

And everyone will request the replacement handle, regardless if it is the right color for their car.

And everyone will put them on ebay, expecting $30-50..

Everyone will get $5-6 for them due to market dillution.

Everyone will flock to a mac forum to complain.

Most of us will lol.

They may have to change the name of the site to MacWhining.

Except that your $30 credit is substantially more than the cost of their bumper and these other cases. Wouldn't make financial sense.

So which case is better, the Belkin Shield Micra or the Incase snap case clear? The Incase looks to be a tighter fit.

If it were a design flaw it would affect all of the phones.. and non-iphones wouldnt experience the same "issue."

/no problems.
//what is funny is that my bosses have started to mention reception issues with their iphone 4s.. coincidentally after all of the bad press... what is that called.. munchhousen syndrome?? (sp)

This would have been good for me, since I wanted a flip case, which I guess is not in fashion with the younger crowd. I like to have screen protection and I won't put one of those skins on my screen.

They were going to use a 1-800 number instead, but then they realized no one with an iPhone 4 can make phone calls...
