Received my Baltic blue leather case in the mail just now. I gotta say the leather this year is really hard like plastic.
Last years definitely had a smooth and soft texture to it.
It's interesting because I had the same reaction when I picked up my case from my local Apple store yesterday, but then I remember thinking the same about my iPhone 11 Pro leather case last year. It developed a nice patina after several weeks, and I can't wait for my Baltic blue case to do the same.

Last years cases were definitely softer and more leather-like. On those I was able to leave an imprint with my nails on the leather that would disappear after a few days.
This years case I can’t do that.
Well I can but I would have to press into it pretty hard and at this point I’m not too sure the case would go back to normal.
im going to assume the case was made this way to keep the weight down since the iPhone is heavier this year.

@Joe Rossignol charge your phone! 😜

Am I the only one cringing at the battery life on that iPhone in the screenshot? :p

Came to post about the lack of leather case options. Saw everyone else had beaten me to it and decided to post a mini review instead.

I picked up a leather case and MagSafe wallet today at a local Apple store. Both in Baltic Blue.
The leather does seem reasonably hard, but I can’t compare to previous years as I’ve always had a silicone case previously. I might have stuck with the silicone case if they’d been available in the same shade of blue as the wallet.

The wallet attaches “reasonably” to the case via magnets. It‘s unlikely to detach due to shaking the phone, but as with all magnets is more prone to becoming detached through a sideways, shearing force. I’ve not carried the case and wallet in my pocket as I’m still waiting on the delivery of my Pro Max. That said, I‘ve not had the wallet detach when I’ve tried putting the case in my pocket.

The wallet will hold three cards, in my case a credit card, a debit card and my driving license, but it’s a tight fit. So much so, that it’s difficult to push the cards up with your thumb using the slot on the back.

My main reason for the wallet purchase is to keep a few business cards with the phone. I’m not sure that I’d want to trust it as my full time wallet, in place of my usual Ridge wallet. If I did decide to use it for carrying credit cards I’d probably detach the wallet and keep in my other pocket.

For some reason, Apple really seems to like putting weird looking bumps on their phones after investing thousands and thousands of hours of R&D effort into making them as thin and flat as possible.
The public has voted: The iPhone's design is a failure. When the vast majority of users feel they have to bury their "thin, elegant" iPhone in a bulky, tacky case... the verdict is clear.

Jony Ive may be gone, but his legacy of shìt lives on.

I can't believe that no one else has commented on how utterly useless this feature is considering that it only generates a picture, whereas the Watch Studio creates something that you can have shipped to your house. They already have all of the possible combinations covered in their marketing images.

That being said, are the magnets in the case attracted to the magnets in the phone in a functional way? Are the magnets what makes the case stay on, or is there a lip?

Right?! I don't know why I had to had to have the jet black iPhone 7 when I just kept it in a red Apple case. I kinda liked the iPhone 4 bumpers, though.

Because we don't want to our $800 electronics to break with an accidental drop? What kind of comment is this, it has nothing to do with the design and everything to do with being a responsible adult who doesn't have gobs of money lying around

I think he just means that they are way more fragile than they need to be, not that he thinks we are stupid for using cases...like, maybe they need to add some other kinds of drop protection. I had a first generation powder blue iPod Mini in 2003 and I dropped it all the time and it was fine. The 3Gs didn't necessarily need a case either. Now I only take my phone out of its case once in a blue moon to admire it, and then it goes right back in.

I reached out to a YouTuber who was reviewing these cases, and his reply was that the experience was identical to previous iPhone cases. The presence of the magnets did not seem to make putting them on or taking them off any easier or different.

I'm sure you were just trying to be funny by lumping Apple's Smart Battery Case in with this topic, but with that particular product there are actually very good reasons for the bump which make it a very clever utilitarian design.

Magnets in the iPhone 12 aren't strong enough to hold any accessories securely.
False - been using my wallet for three days now and it has not fallen out yet and have worn jeans too. Plenty strong enough.

What's the upside over carrying each thing in a different pocket?

For myself my wallet is a bulky thing so if I can reduce that down to a card and 2 forms of ID then I will, more over with an easy to detach wallet unlike the old folio I can remove it without a flap getting in the way of a photo or just that additional bulk when I’m just trying to relax at home. It’s good to have modular designs like this, next thing we’ll see is battery packs with MagSafe too so we can properly stack the things we need for the day or weekend!
