So i just bought a 13" base model MBP a week ago. Should i return it and get the new base model 13"? Or should i go with an Air? Or could a get one of the old 15" for cheap?

PLEASE give me some feedback

Switching to an Air is up to you. Do you need super portability and can you give up the SuperDrive??

As far as swapping out the 13" you bought a week ago with the new one, the answer would be YES! It may not be light years ahead but it is somewhat better.

Doubt it, with Intel behind it and Intel not seemingly supporting USB3. If thunderbolt is built into Intel's chipsets and usb3 is not, do you really think manufacturers will continue upping their BOM's to add another chip for a technology that operates at half the speed?

agreed. check intel site for thunderbolt and scroll to the bottom of the page

wow im actually impressed with this update its better than i was expecting

Did you expect them not to change anything? All they did was to update CPU and GPU (what the industry already did a while back). If they did not do that it would be scandalous. With this changes it's just an embarrassment.

If I were to install apps on a SD card would it work faster than if it was installed on the disk drive itself?

What are the benefits from a 6mb L3 cache to a 8mb L3 cache?

Can this play StarCraft 2 on Ultra decently???

If you buy the most expensive 17" MBP then..... No, you won't get close to decent performance on ultra settings. Great as the refresh is, they aren't gaming machines. You will get adequate performance on 'high' though, just don't expect 1920x1080 on ultra, it will crawl.

You should get the new 15" model if it works with you budget. Otherwise you might be better off sticking with your current machine.

Don't be an idiot. Take it back and get the new one! Don't even think about it. Just go now!

Ordered mine this morning

As my spankin' new signature implies, I order my new 15" MB Pro this morning.

I opted for the 256GB SSD, high resolution anti-glare screen, and 8GB of RAM. I didn't figure the slight bump from 2.2 to 2.3 GHz, even if it adds some more cache, was really worth it at $250. Also had to have the best GFX card on the high end model.

Greedy Apple

LOL...

or for $649, you can buy a 14" aluminum body quad-core HP envy w/ 1600x1200 rez

+ $150 or whatever for a macos X dvd

and have enough cash left over for an ipad and an iphone.

LOL
It's so refreshing to hear from the voice of reason & common sense.

Especially amongst the sea of fanboys that defend absolutely any stunt that Apple pulls.

While I'm a current and long time Mac _user & enthusiast_

(NOT to be confused with fanboy/zealot)

the prices Apple continues to charge for a 15" MBP are simply obscene.

Sure, I've been guilty of paying Apple Tax in the past, but there's no reason they should keep it so high in this economy.

Apple laptops are terrific, and I would like to see them in the hands of more users.

Unfortunately many people don't have the budget it takes.

Amongst the ones that do, _many pass & buy PC's_ solely due to the price premium, rightfully called "Apple Tax".

So while I'm sure these fine new models will sell well & drive my stock higher, I'm ashamed of Apples extreme greed.

It's no wonder so many intelligent people, look at Apple Users As Elitist Dolts.

Definition: dolt

A mental retard who is clueless not only about current events, but also has the IQ level of a rock. "Dolt" may be the most sophisticated insult in the English language. Dolts commonly populate such stereotypes as jocks, nerds, fruits, bookworms, and dorks.

RAM Upgrade

Would I be a sucker for choosing the 8GB option? Should I just order the 4GB and then grab 8GB of RAM from crucial for cheaper?

http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollection.aspx?familyID=43402&MarketSegment=MBL

The "odd ball" is the 2.3 i5 in the entry level MBP 13". ( There is a 2.5 model but no 2.3 in ark ) Don't make much sense if purposely underclocking since the i7 model they use is not. Perhaps got a price break for chips that don't make the cut. Not like Apple passes up opportunities to goose up margins.

This has been discussed, it's a Core i5 2410M (for some reason it's not on Intel's site).

Well I wouldn't buy anything that utilizes sandy bridge right now anyway so I don't care if they are $300, I'm not buying one. Very disappointed with these new machines.

My advice is, to all you who wants a Macbook - buy the cheapest one. They will be outdated next year anyways.

Infact, even buy last years model, which should now be cheaper. The 2010 Macbook 13 inch.

Ah, finally. Just ordered TWO of these:

2.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 RPM
SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
MacBook Pro 17-inch Hi-Resolution Glossy Widescreen Display
Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter
Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter
AppleCare

AND the Radeon 5870 graphics card for my MacPro

Yeah, I paid Apple for the extra ram because I don't need to risk a kernel panic from not-quite-compatible ram in the middle of a huge show. I WILL be on the lookout for a decently-priced SSD hard drive, though.

Going through my Apple business rep saved me some money so when the Final Cut Pro upgrade comes, I can get that too, lol.

Geekbench

Man, the early geekbench scores coming in on the quad core MBP models are near that of the i7 iMacs!

I will definitely go for the MBP over an iMac if that trend continues. I can always add a screen.

-- Bet an iMac refresh can't be far in coming, tho. w/Thunderbolt, Sandy Bridge, etc

thunderbolt potential

Hi all,

First post here (regular reader for about 6 months of so) and in the market for a 13" i7, mainly for musical editing, production and dj-ing. And I was wondering two things (I am no computer expert):
- Will the i7 13" be powerfull enough to play WoW at decent graphic levels (the only mac/pc game I play once in a while)?

and (maybe more interesting)

- does thunderbolt opens up the possibility for the external GPU to return (as far as is really ever was "there")? I mean PCIe 16x is only 4 GB/sec. And TB is supposed to be doing 10 GB/sec...

I love how many are personally offended when a company makes an evolutionary upgrade rather than revolutionizing the world every year.

Seriously, get something better to care about. People, for instance.

So i just bought a 13" base model MBP a week ago.

What do you want to use it for?

Playing high end 3D games ? Probably keep it.

Running multi-GB mathematical models ? Probably return it.

If you are just doing average user stuff..... you can just keep it. Especially if you are on a budget. Decent chance you will have to pay a restocking fee since you, most likely, opened and used it. If the amount is trivial to you then replace it, but otherwise still have a good laptop. Howerever, replacing means you are paying more for those other alternatives. You are in the window where Apple (if bought from them directly) will give you full credit for the "old" model. Other retailers may or may not be so nice.

My advice is, to all you who wants a Macbook - buy the cheapest one. They will be outdated next year anyways.

Infact, even buy last years model, which should now be cheaper. The 2010 Macbook 13 inch.

Silly. Buy the most maxed out one, so it lasts longer. You can easily go 4 years that way without feeling that you've got a dinosaur. In some cases longer than that.

If your thinking about the new 13" mbp's then no, they aren't that much faster. If your thinking about the new 15-17" mbp's in relation to the previous 13" mbp's then yes, its a monumental performance jump.

Cheers for the reply. using the 13" MBP for when I'm away on assignments so don't want the larger 15". Need something neat and handy for storage. Looks like the upgrade for the 13" wasn't all that great after all. Pity! Guess I'll wait until the next refresh and hope Apple realizes that actual Professionals use the 13", and not only the 15"/17". If they don't, then just call it the 13" MACBOOK!

I think first of I would like to say to those moaning about the Intel graphics, SHUT UP. Because Apple had to do something and it did. And don't moan just because you were ALL wrong predicitng Apple would get rid of the ODD!
If you don't like the new 13" model then fine, wait until next years revision with better GPU. You are getting a core i7 option!
in fact the new top end 13" model is FASTER then my top of the range 2010 15" Pro!!!!!

As for the 15" and 17"!!! Holy crap! Great update of the hardware, fantastic! Quad core in a machine less then an inch thick and decent graphics! And the SSD prices have dropped too...

Bad part of this is the price in general I think is more! And the utterly stupid 'Thunderbolt' name!

You simply can't have everything. These things are important for everyone but you'll have to make the judgement as to what is most important to you.

Screen quality
Weight
Speed
Battery Life
Noise/heat

I was all about to get the 13 to 'upgrade' my 2006 MBP 15 but then I changed my mind and got the new 15 instead (have been waiting since I got the fund last October). To me, the 13 sacrifices too much in terms of screen quality (no high res matte option) and doesn't give me enough gain in weight (loosing 1/2 lbs would've been nice), battery life (7 hr? WTF?), or noise/heat emission (should've picked the 25W Core i7 chips instead of 35W). Plus, the 15 is SO much faster than the 13 in combined CPU/GPU terms. So here comes my awesome quad core MBP with 8 GB ram and high res display!! Noise/heat and weight be damned for this time (not that it's terrible, still better than my current MBP I bet with 3-4x performance).

If I really want something quiet and light, I'll get the iPad 2 coming next Wednesday. :-D
