is it this:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/22/sony-vaio-s-series-get-an-updated-design-core-i5-2410m-cpu-and/

its not released yet?

yeah that would be the one, it's a month at most to wait so it's not like it's a major issue but it's more a case of comparison. I could have easily said the asus u36 which is out in the us as an alternative although that does use the last gen core i cpu's so wouldn't be a completely fair comparison

Hi all,
Now that they are here, I could use some advice.

My main reasons for wanting new MBP or iMac 27": Heavy photography editing, and music creation in Apple Logic. Obviously, the display on the iMac is a huge plus for the photography, and if I go MBP I will need an external display. If I go MBP though I can replace my current laptop as well, and just have 1 computer and an external monitor to hookup to when I want to photo edit.

However, with MBP, much smaller harddrives...however I'm wondering if there are any users out there who store all of their pictures on an external harddrive and just use the MBP drive for everything else? I'm tempted by the speed of a solid state drive but obviously the lack of storage means I will need to use an external drive for all photography stuff. Does that setup work well with a Mac? Or should I say to heck with the MBP, and wait for the new iMac refresh? My current laptop is a 4 year old Dell Inspiron 17, its battery is toast and the display is pretty dark compared to what it used to be, but it works for internet browsing and basic stuff when I am not sitting on the computer for hours.

What would you do?

I've got one of these: http://drobo.com/products/drobo-s.php with 5 2TB drives in it connected via eSATA on my 17" MBP. Works great for storing everything (and having it safe with dual-redundancy RAID on the Drobo), that way I just keep whatever I need on my MBP's drive and move it off to the Drobo later (or work off the Drobo if I'm around it).

Supposedly that's just a change in how they report the battery life, and in actual usage the battery life didn't go down. I don't have one in hand so I can't verify.

That's good to know. Indeed IF Apple did their battery testing in the more "realistic" way AND actually not lower the battery life from the previous generation. That's what only thing I was disappointed about this update.

Now we have quad-cord in our laptops now with Mac OSX. Great!

Sorry but all of these people that want blu-ray in Apples, you love to be disappointed or whine. Most of you know that Steve Jobs just hates dealing with its licensing. So just deal.

Also all those of you that say “this is expensive.” WELL DA, THIS IS APPLE! What has changed since 1976?

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR. :)

darn, waited a year for the 13' macbook pro and no higher resolution display like the 13" MacBook Air. I figure, if I'm gonna look at the darned thing for hours I would like a nicer screen. Ah well, I love the Air's display and I'll keep my fingers crossed for a faster Air this summer. Till then, my money will just sit in my bank account doing nothing.

Okay so to everyone who's complaining about the new macbook pros.

I just ran geek-bench (just bought one as i've been waiting for months since i sold my old 15") and the "low end" 13 MacBook Pro for $1199 received a geek-bench score of 5850. Up significantly from last years MacBooks. Correct me if i'm wrong but didn't the 2010 17" MacBook pro receive a score of around 5200 overall. I know everyone doesn't need the new speed bump but DAMN this thing is smokin.

-Happy Customer

Not sure what the old score was, but I just tried on my new 17" MBP and got 10,072. Can't wait until I pop in my SSD and 8G ram.

Just wondering can you show me a 15", quad core, acceptable trackpad, 5.6 pound computer, 7h battery life for 1000 bucks (let's say Lightspeak equals blueray). I can only think of the $1600 ENVY and it's 1.6ghz dual core but better graphics. And also add that it needs to be a branded computer like Sony, HP, Dell etc.

The only complaint I really have is the resolution of the screen and not being 7200rpm, and both can be changed but they should be standard.

For 600 dollars cheaper! You asked for it buddy.

So 600 bucks buys you an arguably "better" case, a glass trackpad and OS X which I can also install on that XPS. Sorry Apple. Your laptops are ridiculously overpriced now.

If they re-priced their price points at 799, 1199, 1499, and 1799 for 17 inch, it would be much better.

Alas, I am stuck with my $1400 MBP I bought retail (on clearance) when the new unibodies came out for a while longer.

Collecting interest.

did everyone know they werent going to include sandy bridge chips this time around, because no one is talking about that!? Typical apple always a few steps behind hardware wise eh!? i sold my last update macbook pro 13 for the hope of better one this time around but the no graphics cards for 1400+ is a no go for me. I guess ill wait 6 months tell the next refresh, and i then just go up to the 15" to get more bang for the buck.

???
All the MBPs released today are Sandy Bridge chips.

Great update

C'mon guys this is by far the best update in ages. New GPUs, Quad CPUs, Light Peak, and speeds double as fast as the previous MacBook Pros, all for the same price (except for the 17").
This is good, no doubt about it, these new babies are a great investment :)

The geekbench numbers make me jealous: 10.000, close to the Mac Pros, when my old MacBook gives me only 1.700 (it's a Core 2 duo from 2008).

If I had the cash, I wouldn't hesitate a second, but I have to get a new iMac first, and I expect a nice refresh shortly.

Wow, that looks insane! How much does that, along with 5 2TB harddrives add up to? Right now I've been pricing out a 13" macbook pro with external monitor (either the apple display or a Dell U2711), but it still seems I'm going to be paying way more than if I just get an iMac. Do you use an external display?

Also, will 4GB memory be enough for heavy Aperture and/or Logic use?

You Fail, the Intel Core i5-480M is a DUAL CORE i5 (what was in the previous gen MBP) at 2.66 GHz, the new base MBP has a 2.0 GHz Quad i7 Sandy Bridge chip. the new MBP would eat that DELL for breakfast!

I like the new 'books for the most part. I especially like the i7 in both 15 inch 'books. Would have been nice if the 15-inch 2.0GHz had a 512MB (even as an optional BTO) instead of 256MB. Of course my use of Photoshop and future use of Aperture probably doesn't really require anything much more than 256. Having the most RAM is much more important iirc.

I was really hoping for 1680-by-1050 hi-res screens as standard for the 15 inch 'books.

Missed that. :p

The high end 15" MBP seems quite appealing to me. Though, I agree with other people, a mid range 15" MBP with 512mb graphics would have been nice but it really doesn't matter.

That's what I just picked up today. Gave up my 13" Air for it.

Aperture can be a hog, 8GB wouldn't be a bad choice.

The Drobo was $750 (yes, pricey) and I got the 2TB drives for $70 apiece when Western Digital had a rebate thing going on and Newegg had them on sale for $90. So all in all it was $1100 for 5.5TB (formatted) of space with room for 2 drive failures before anything would be lost. Nice thing about the Drobo is I can switch to single disk redundancy at any time to get another 2TB if I need it. You can also start with 2 disks and add as you get more/mix and match sizes. They're pretty neat!

They're expensive but really you're not going to buy another enclosure until you set the Drobo on fire.

Some of you guys update your computers WAY too often. sheesh, I been using my 2007 Macbook since I bought it, and im looking at these specs with my mind blown. Lets do some comparison to bring you all back to reality

my 2007 macbook:
2.0 Ghz C2d
GMA-950 graphics.... yes remember when graphics were integrated?
65mb VRam
2.5Gb Ram (i upgraded this, its the one thing making this system run decently)

2011 Macbook Pro:
2.0 Ghz Quad i7
AMD 6490M
256Mb Vram
4Gb Ram

I compared it to not the top line MBP cause that wouldnt be fair, but the obvious point is my macbook described is my daily computer handling anything i throw at it excluding gaming, But does include running windows XP in a virtual machine. (smoothly i must add)

Yet truth is these new macbook pros would run laps around my macbook, enough said.

Dude.

Just stop.

If you can't afford it, by all means step aside and move on.

This is a GREAT update which I am considering :)
