Continuing to read through this thread is giving me a headache. About the only 'fail' apple has is the low res in the 13"

These machines are FAST..

I really don't know what some of you want... and complaining about price.. go spec a similar pc laptop.

I'm not a fanboy, i'd use any os at the right price.. but man, these are NICE machines..

methinks many of you are kids who upgrade every refresh or two.. because those of us using a computer (and yes, it still works fine) for 3-5 years would be overjoyed at the choices.

Again, the only disappointment was sticking to 1280 in the 13".. i'd even take the dual not quad core, but won't cut back to 1280.. I'd rather have the air which is slower and lighter than faster and crappy res.

btw, the dell example is hilarious...

See if the xps will last you 3-5 years.. it won't. Then again, I'm sure it's an upgrade a year for you, at least... oh, and it's a pound heavier.. 20% plus to get any sorta battery life.

Some of you guys update your computers WAY too often. sheesh, I been using my 2007 Macbook since I bought it, and im looking at these specs with my mind blown. Lets do some comparison to bring you all back to reality

my 2007 macbook:
2.0 Ghz C2d
GMA-950 graphics.... yes remember when graphics were integrated?
65mb VRam
2.5Gb Ram (i upgraded this, its the one thing making this system run decently)

2011 Macbook Pro:
2.0 Ghz Quad i7
AMD 6490M
256Mb Vram
4Gb Ram

I compared it to not the top line MBP cause that wouldnt be fair, but the obvious point is my macbook described is my daily computer handling anything i throw at it excluding gaming, But does include running windows XP in a virtual machine. (smoothly i must add)

Yet truth is these new macbook pros would run laps around my macbook, enough said.

Samesies, I've been using my 15" 07 MBP since I got it and it's ludicrous what I just got today for the same price I paid on the 15".

Old 15":
2.4GHz C2D
256MB 8600GT
160GB 5400rpm HDD
2GB RAM
put in 4GB RAM ($200 from Crucial back then) and a 500GB 7200rpm HDD ($120)
=$2499+$239 for AppleCare+$200+$120=$3100ish

New 17":
2.3GHz Core i7 Quad
1GB 6570m
750GB 5400rpm HDD
4GB RAM
put in 8GB ($91 from Newegg) and a 750GB 7200rpm HDD ($120)
=$2588+$239 for AppleCare+$91+$120=$3200

Solid.

You Fail, the Intel Core i5-480M is a DUAL CORE i5 (what was in the previous gen MBP) at 2.66 GHz, the new base MBP has a 2.0 GHz Quad i7 Sandy Bridge chip. the new MBP would eat that DELL for breakfast!

I'm sorry, enjoy your quad core e-peen for 600 bucks. I'm sure I can find a quad core core i5 somewhere for about the same price.

The argument isn't moot, the MBP is still grossly overpriced and warrant at least a 100 dollar price reduction or at least a bump in the pointless specs like video card and screen resolution (256mb vram? seriously apple? ****ing bean counters)

You have the exact same specs as my macbook. Except mine is a late 2006 model.

Dude.

Just stop.

If you can't afford it, by all means step aside and move on.

So pointing out that Mac hardware is overpriced by HUNDREDS is saying we can't afford it? Maybe it's just pointing out the fact that anybody buying a Mac gets ripped off.

The fact remains that you are paying $300-$400 more for a separate OS. I've done it before, and I may do it again. But to call someone 'poor' for not wanting to pay a VERY expensive premium (~ 20%) for what is really just a preference (Windows is MUCH better in many things, as is OSX) is idiotic.

I was hoping for more out of this, especially if those prices are right. I was willing to get another 13", I don't really mind the screen size, but all I'd be getting out of it is a slightly better processor and 2 more gigs of RAM. While the extra RAM would be nice it's not worth the price. To get anything decent out of this update I'd need to get the 15" and $1800 is a little pricey for that.

That Processor is waaaaay better than yours, sorry. Also double the ram and increased battery life, better GPU, reason enough for me to upgrade.

Uh, but that's not what the other poster was pointing out at all. He wasn't comparison shopping. He was showing an older computer without Sandy Bridge, with a slower GPU, not a comparable machine at all.

Of course it's going to come out cheaper when it isn't up to spec. Compare machines that are comparable and you'll find Apple isn't so far off mark, especially right after a refresh.

Dell XPS
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dndogx2&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&model_id=xps-15

NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 420M 1GB graphics with Optimus edit
MEMORY 6GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 Memory edit
HARD DRIVE 750GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive edit
SECURITY SOFTWARE McAfee SecurityCenter, 30-Day Trial edit
DISPLAY Silver Anodized Aluminum 15.6" FHD (1080p) B+RGLED Display with Facial Recognition and 2.0 MP webcam

1099...

Faster CPU
More GPU ram, possibly similar speed GPU
More memory
Same harddrive
MUCH higher res screen with RGBLED display
Bluray

For 600 dollars cheaper! You asked for it buddy.

So 600 bucks buys you an arguably "better" case, a glass trackpad and OS X which I can also install on that XPS. Sorry Apple. Your laptops are ridiculously overpriced now.

If they re-priced their price points at 799, 1199, 1499, and 1799 for 17 inch, it would be much better.

Alas, I am stuck with my $1400 MBP I bought retail (on clearance) when the new unibodies came out for a while longer.

lol Your cool. Thats a dual core CPU buddy :p and that computer doesnt run OSX ;)

mate i worked for apple and trust me they aint stupied. the so called 'hike' is due in shipping and storage cost LOL. believe it if you want! BUY a dell mate! XPS all day long!

You troll get out of here and go to the XPS forums, if we wanted Dell crap we wouldnt be here. And no your XPS doesnt compare to Any Mac, Id rather have my C2D Mac over Crap Dell.
kthxbye

Id pay 1000 dollars extra for a better OS, Al unibody, thinness and long battery life...
Find a computer that has the Power, Weight, Build, Battery that a MBP 13, 15, and 17 have, then we will see the extra price of the OS. Oh yeah make sure it can Run OSX too like Macs can Run Windows.
Its my money I want the best, dont hate. :D

OSX in my opinion as a student that does not game but does use computers a lot is leagues better than any windows, yes even W7. Its just smoother and more efficient per the same specs.

I'm gonna cry if no one gives me their 2 cents, 4500rpm or 7200rpm? I run a lot of programs like photoshop, video/audio editing, dj software, etc etc... please? thank you :)

How does Apple get away with charging premium prices for PCs made in China?

Go look around your house and see how much stuff you have is made in china.. and then take apart your car and do the same.

This whole racist idea is ridiculous. Grow up.

Doubly so if you are over the age of thirty.

7200 without a doubt. Huge difference on file access.

What would be the speed advantage between the 2.3 i5 13 inch vs the 2.7 i7 13 inch? Not really savy there so any input would be appreciated.

Mainly for video encoding. I like the 13 inch size for my needs 15 would be a little larger than I want.

~17%, ie clock speed difference.

Difference between encoding speed between i7 13" and i7 15" will be almost an extra 50%. You sure you don't want to go to the 15"?

If video encoding software ever goes to OpenCL, then the high end 15" would outperform even the low end 15" by like an order of magnitude. But it probably won't happen, at least for a while.

Quad. Nice spec Change. Beats the heck out of useless "liquid metal" any day for me.

Damn straight.

Still disappointed with lack of blade SSD. Would rather have that than Light Peak.

I was going to buy my first mac, the 13 low end MBP, but the redesign was very important to me, i didn`t want to buy a mac that will be getting a complete redesign in 9 months or less. I don´t needed since i have a 6 months old hp with great specs, i just wanted to buy a mac but i believe i`ll be waiting for the next generation MBP

Unfortunately it's the end of the road for me...7 hour battery is a dealbreaker...So sad! (said like Gretchen wieners in mean girls)

You know, I was not going to reply but I cant bite my tongue.

- I have never ever, ever ever, never once used my computer away from a power source for 10 hours. When would you ever, ever need that anyway? When would you need that for 7 hours? I dont understand.

Sure more = better. But how is that the deal breaker. I dont know anyone who uses there computer that long every day any where a power plug is not even remotely available. Even when im flying from the US to Japan (12 hour flight sometimes) I cant stare at my computer that long. You fall asleep lol.

I understand that it may be frustrating that the battery went down. But its not like it dropped to unrealistic levels like 2 hours or something. 7 hours! thats a whole work day. So how is this "The deal breaker" when you have gained so so so much. Quad Core Sandy Bridges. Finally Quad Core in a thin and sheik notebook. WAY better GPUs. I mean, almost 3 fold. 4GB Mem Standard, 8 Support. WAY more than enough for a 'notebook'

So with all the amazing upgrades. How is 7 hours of battery so bad you have no interest whatsoever? Please explain because your ignorance has given me a headache.

It's not about racism - it's that Apple products are made on cheap labor. If Apple was truly premium, we'd get Made in the USA.

Apple just gets a cheaply made PC, slaps OS X on it and charges a premium price? Apple is horrible. There is no reason Mac prices should be so high. OS X is only $130, which is about the same as Windows 7 (correct me if I am wrong), so OS X cannot be the reason!

I'm genuinely excited about the number of legacy ports that the new *ugh* Thunderbolt port can replace. I know they all require adapters, but every port on that laptop could conceivably be replaced with it. Firewire and Ethernet ports (sorry guys!) will undoubtedly be the first to go in a generation or two, if only because how deep they are compared to the Thunderbus and USB ports.

Apple has an enviable position that as soon as they implement them into the iOS device line, (for instance TB cables with a USB adaptor cap) manufacturers will be falling over themselves to stick them on their machines / devices.

Are you kidding? Instead of a physical port you will now need to pack in half a dozen dongles and hubs. What is the difference? Please tell me you are joking.

Wrong.

$130 is only upgrade pricing, you need an existing OS X license to be able to use that $130 copy of OS X you've bought.

So you can say that OS X costs $1000, basically the difference between a PC and an equivalent Mac.

Companies charge what people will pay. If the past years are any indication, people are fine paying what macs cost. I, for one, do not feel Apple's laptops are overpriced. Mine (2.4 C2D, 6 GB ram, 512 vram) has been wonderful and worth every penny I put into it.

I think the best of Apple's R&D and QC goes into their portable machines.

Huh? Are you referring to Snow Leopard's price? Because...you don't need Leopard installed to install Snow Leopard, and last I checked Snow Leopard was $49. What am I missing here?

you have it in hand?

Yea I bought it around 11:30 est. Ive never owned a mac before but this is really nice! My two choices were the high end 13 or low end 15. I unfortunatly didnt have the extra 300 dollars and i just like the size of the 13 more. I dont do much gaming or anything visually just the regular surfing, lurking, listening to music and playing minecraft while doing homework!
