Its a fancy charging dock. It also includes a $29 cable. $79-29 = 50, the same price as any other charging dock Apple makes. You've gone off the deep end with your rant.

You're totally missing the point. Charging $29 for a $1 cable is and has always been extortionate. I buy better quality 3rd party variants for $10 a pop from Anker. And since when has a cheap piece of plastic to prop up your watch or phone for $50 been good value?

You don't understand what luxury means.

I can get a milk carton to support my iPhone too.

But compare the really big purchases and their prices. The iPad Pro is more powerful and cheaper than Microsoft's latest Surface. The iMac Retina is unlike anything else available and cheaper than anything with a similar screen and internals (or if you try to buy screen and internals separately). The laptops have little competition when you compare form and power. (My Toshiba Portege costs the same as a comparable Macbook Air but has a much duller and worse screen. Also it is made primarily of plastic.)

The extras are just that, extras. They are priced to sell in small numbers based on convenience, consistency, and somewhat irrational reasons (once you've accepted you are paying $2,500 for your iMac, you just throw in the trackpad).

Nearly everything you said is at least debatable. I guess a longer answer would derail this thread even further, so i make it short: Imo the higher priced products shouldn't be sole reference point for accessory prices. In comparison to the gold Watch edition, everything else is inexpensive. But this doesn't make those accessories a good deal.

Wow, ugly and expensive. Their entire iWatch line stinks. Apple really should look towards the Withings Activite or the LG G watch for a lesson in how to make a smartwatch with style.

First, is Apple Watch not iWatch.
Second, having one, I can surely say that is really good. I haven't tried other watches but it feels great.
Last, the discussion is about the docking. It has nothing to do to what Apple has been delivering so far

Quite. However as a prospective customer not yet invested in the Apple Watch ecosystem, I don't think of the watch, strap and dock as separate components. In my mind, I see a shiny, thick and oblong device which is, frankly, ugly compared to other watches. Reminds me of Nokia's weird and wonderful devices back in the late 90's, and we all know where they ended up.

To compound this by offering an accessory which is also ugly and expensive, well, that makes the watch an even less attractive proposition to people who haven't bought one, regardless of whether it is called an iWatch, Apple Watch or MacWatch Pro.

Or you could get a cheaply made, white plastic saucer from Apple that looks like it belongs in a picnic set, with a hockey puck style device that does the actual charging, and looks like it was glued on, for $79.

I really think that what matters the most, are the people who really have the Watch and spent money for it. You don't buy a product if the docking station of it is beautiful.

Don't confuse people because you don't like a product that you never used

This thing is shockingly nice, super high quality feel and impeccable fit and finish. Making it obvious that, once again, many MR posters have their heads somewhere other than between their shoulders.

It's awesome. It has a leathery, soft-touch feel on top. The charger surface is softer than the one on the charger puck included with the watch.

The bottom feels like the material used to line the high-end watch boxes, sort of like a suede leather.

The base is heavy, substantial, much more three-dimensional than expected, and is not apt to slide around on furniture.

The pivot joint is solid, beautifully finished, and the substantial steel ring underneath the charger pivot looks like it's carved from a billet of metal.

The bottom line is, it's a beautiful solution that won't scratch your watch- unlike some of the other charging stands I've seen touted here over the past few months.

Looks like ill be picking one up this afternoon. I'm glad you mentioned that it has some heft to it, I was nervous about it being lightweight like a pillow.

I just got an apple watch. But I'm not spending $79 on a dock for it. The charger that comes in the box is good enough for me.

Greed is not giving customers AppleCare+ for free when they buy a $1000 smart phone.

Thats greed.
Reality check... Nobody told you to buy an iPhone. Smartphones are the most expensive personal device we use right now.
