As someone who has zero musical ability, I find this really cool but dont know if it actually is! I will be looking out for reviews.

It's like voice notes but optimized for audio recording. Just like you'd use Evernote or Notes.app to take quick notes or save ideas, this is the audio form of that because it was designed with musicians in mind.

The app is closely integrated with GarageBand for iOS, which has received a major update today.
Important question for me... Do I have to have the insanely huge Garageband app on my phone to make use of this Music Memos app? I liked playing with GB for a while, but the gigantic amount of space it took up as an app when compared to others made it not worth the space to me.

high-quality, uncompressed audio
That should work great on the measly 16GB base models that are still being released. ::sigh::

The stock app is garbage—especially since iOS 7—and I've been waiting for sync that was decoupled from the mess that is iTunes since before iCloud was launched. Woo!
So that's why my voice memos stopped getting synced to my desktop. I never bothered looking into it.

This is gonna be awesome. I've honestly been using Garageband for iOS more than Logic recently. Perfect for the quick music fix

GarageBand is probably one of the most complex iOS app from Apple. It's also my favorite iPad app (it's amazing that they can make the whole app work also on the iPhone but to me it's on the iPad that it shines).

While some professionals might complain about it missing x or y feature, it's still a very in-depth app with tons of features and options, especially now with audio plug-in support.

Now if I can put aside enough money to buy an iPad pro...

Totally agree. GarageBand has made music-making accessible to the masses, and, has likely inspired many to go further becoming musicians.

They should've enabled the ability to create and save ringtones directly from the Music Memos app. That would've made this app an instant download for many people.

I can't imagine that many people are actually purchasing ringtones from Apple for up to $1.29 each and they already allow ringtone creation apps from third parties. Having the ability to create ringtones natively on the iPhone would be so much better than having to use third-party apps to do it and then syncing with iTunes to get the ringtone over to the phone.
You can create ringtones natively on iOS using GarageBand already, using original recordings or music you own. To your point, you could record using the music memo app then import into GarageBand for iOS then export as a ringtone.

I did not know that. Thank you! If I subscribe to Apple Music, do you know if I can I use GarageBand to make ringtones from songs I download to my phone as part of the Apple Music subscription even though I don't technically "own" the music?

Yeah, because everyone know how vital a headphone jack is to RECORDING music!

Have you ever recorded music before??? Headphones are necessary to hear feedback...Or if you're listening to reference vocals/instruments while singing. Wow...

Very excited for Music Memos! I've been looking for an easy way to record demos / rough drafts of songs that I then can send forward to people to add their own stuff to it. Garageband integration will also be very interesting, so downloading both the app and the update at once! When I get to home to my precious WIFI, that is.

And concerning the headphone jack and it's relevance when recording music, I've found it to be quite useful (read: necessary) when recording more than one track to a project. The headphones function as a monitor, and thus prevent audio from bleeding from the tracks already laid down to the current one.

A very solid update for GarageBand. The the new live loops reminds me a bit of Ableton Live (if they had an iOS app). The live FX sound great.

Why? While the microphone in the iPhone isn't studio quality, it is very good for vocals and acoustic instruments. Uncompressed recordings make it even better.

I'm impressed that the microphone is even this good. Definitely shows the influence of shazaam, though I suspect that even with a more limited frequency band, shazaam could still recognize recorded songs. For the voice, which is the majority of the use of a built-in mic, the range is quite limited, and quality doesn't need to be very high. But as a spectrum analyzer, and for instruments, it needs to be of a reasonably substantial quality. SO that means, no matter what Apple does with the 3.5mm jack, the built-in mic will still be of a high standard, as well as have a high quality ADC.

It has a 30 second limitation though or did. That wasn't good enough for me when I wanted a loop of 10 seconds. A lot of retro video game loops are shorter than 30 sec. It absolutely useless for a text tone for instance.

Yeah and this is someone using an iPhone, that hasn't even been confirmed, released yet. Plus, even if it is released without said jack, do you really think there is no other way to achieve what your talking about? WOW Indeed!

I sure wish there was a way to import simple projects from Garageband for Mac into Garageband for iOS, though I understand why it's designed to move in the other direction.

Think about the photographers.
Since I'm a better photographer than guitarist (but have been doing both for around 50 years)... If you were to say, "pro photographers" and thinking "Aperture" you'd have a point, but if you were thinking "camera," iPhone is a pretty awesome tool, capable of remarkably good work (for what it is).

I'm thinking of kids (like mine), dabbling at video, photography, music... iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touch give them real tools, ridiculously easy to use, good enough to be useful to pros, at no extra charge or for a few bucks... it's totally amazing to me. 50 years ago, "toys" were woefully incapable of any kind of serious use. Easy Bake Ovens, plastic "guitars" containing hand-cranked music boxes, toy xylophones disguised as pianos...

The question isn't whether our kids and grandkids all become pros - no way possible - but it's not just about launching careers, it's about having a life full of creative outlets, rather than passive media consumption.

I've started playing with Music Memos, and think back to the days when I worked for a music production company - a half-dozen songwriters, each in an office with a cheap boombox and a Wurlitzer electric piano, pounding out scratch demos (we also had fully-equipped demo and mastering studios, to take things to the next step)... If they were outside the office, maybe they had a microcassette-based voice memo recorder. This is so far ahead of that.

Listening to my first Music Memos also reminds me why I chose to work with musicians, rather than try to make my living as one. Still, I'm inspired to improve, rather than walk away in disgust, and I suspect I'll finally start stringing these bits and pieces into complete recordings.

As a vocalist, the only thing I'd like to have added for now would be a real-time monitoring option. Otherwise, this is a really great app.

I can't wait to try it out. It's uncharacteristically difficult to find the app however. Search for it on the app store, and you get dozens of hits, none for this one. You have to find it under Featured, then Apps by Apple.

This is going to be analogous to what the iPhone has done for photography - often the most creative opportunities for taking a picture came when you didn't have your camera. Now with your phone, you always have a camera. With this, you'll always have the ability to record when creativity strikes. Can't tell you how often I've come up with something, only to forget it later because I didn't have any way to record it. I've made do with voice memo or even a video, but this is much more efficient and comes with more tools. Hopefully, the .band files are not huge.

Maybe apple think we don´t already have enough EDM and loop based music around. We really really need more loops now. Great stuff! :(
