This app will be amazing to use when iPhone 7 arrives without a headphone jack
What has that got to do with anything in the article? Are you still grumpy because you can't buy black and white TVs anymore?
This looks like a great update, I was a bit worried that some of those Apple Apps didn't see major updates for a while, glad they keep them evolving.

It's a really good app but... It really needs the ability to start the drums and bass before you add your voice/guitar/piano etc.

Garageband was one of the reasons why I wanted a Mac. Couldn't find a similar app on Windows. Since its on iOS, its even better. Updates are very welcome.

Maybe apple think we don´t already have enough EDM and loop based music around. We really really need more loops now. Great stuff! :(
How dare they giving people that don't own expensive instruments to make music. Forum members never seem to be happy about anything, it could be the lack of sunlight..... And some people just are bored with historic instruments (like guitars;)).

Tools of this sort have a tendency to grow and refine over time. A click track lead-in could be helpful.

Using this to create a full production is not so helpful - it turns it from its intended use. The point, from my perspective, is to have something painfully simple to use, to capture ideas that will be fleshed-out in far more capable (and complex) apps like Garage Band. The point is not to replace Garage Band altogether.

Now if Apple would just bring Aperture to iOS. Oh wait, they killed that. And now Adobe has no competition. If I could only get RAW file import in Lightroom Mobile, I would be so freaking happy. I don't get why Apple builds these great apps for certain types of creatives, such as video and audio professionals, but then kills off their pro photography product. What's up with the bias? I thought they were a photography minded company. Such a huge missed opportunity to keep pushing the industry forward!

RAW is supported in LRM

I'd add lack of insight. And imagination.

Doesn't this app appear to do something similar to the Capo Touch or Music Spectrograph apps already in the iOS App Store, except for recorded snippets instead of the music library?

Looks like it's a separate free app.
I realize that, but I mean do I have to have GarageBand to use the features of the Music Memos app. Both of them are "free" for me, so that's not the issue. I'd just prefer not to need the 1+ gig GarageBand app on my phone to make full use of this new app.
[doublepost=1453321237][/doublepost]So who did they buy in order to put this app out? I'm sure they could've built it from the ground up themselves, but it just seems too much like other solutions for it to have been completely their own doing.

The port also doubles as a microphone jack, in case you've been living under a rock for the past 8 years.

Nobody actually believes that the next iPhone will be unable to record audio.

And nobody actually believes it will be impossible to use traditional headphone plugs with the next iPhone.

It's odd the way people talk as though they believe a crisis is actually coming. I don't think they're all trolls, they're some other phenomenon where people get upset before thinking through really basic things. (Not specific to these two posts—a more general observation that they remind me of.)

This must be music software update day at Apple...

They also released a solid update to Logic Pro X today (Version 10.2.1)...

• New multi-threading feature improves performance when processing multiple live channels
• Faster playback responsiveness when previewing Apple Loops and performing region edits
• Flex Pitch editing can be performed within the Tracks area using a Piano Roll interface
• A collection of 30 plug-ins have been redesigned to add Retina support and improve usability
• Numerous improvements to Alchemy including Apple Loops support and 11 new spectral effects
• Improved reliability when downloading additional content
• Additional content can be downloaded directly from the Sound Library and Apple Loops browsers
• Drum Machine Designer supports drag and drop of multiple audio files
• The Step Editor can automatically create lanes to display all MIDI events in a region
• New export option allows you to to create stems from multiple selected tracks
• Improved VoiceOver support

Thanks.

Does anyone have access to detailed release notes of all the other fixes? If they exist. Cant find them anywhere.

Agree. Apple releases a pretty damn sweet app. For free. And with that some start gettingt the shakes, causing them to abandon all reason, hoping for a gotcha moment. Like Apple might forget and not allow people to plug in headphones. Over even forget to include the built-in microphone - think about that one for half a second...

It's all very juvenile.

No, you can use Music Memos without GarageBand on the iPhone, no different than using the Voice Memos app. It is designed to feed into GarageBand and LogicPro X (so you can stitch the pieces into a complete project) but you can do that on another device, thanks to iCloud integration.

I don't think they had to buy anybody out to do this. Everything is an outgrowth of work done on GarageBand and LogicPro. I think the idea grew from the relative complexity of starting a new project in GarageBand. "Why can't I have a way to get started quickly and easily?"

nobody actually believes it will be impossible to use traditional headphone plugs with the next iPhone.

The many comments on previous threads seem to indicate to the contrary.

Or at least not "impossible" but if the rumor is true it would require an adapter, potentially bulky, expensive, and easy to lose.

So not only are Apple *allegedly* going to remove the headphone jack from the next iPhone but also the microphone! Also, how does any of this stop you using the headphone/microphone jack in your current iPhone?

Mind blowing stuff!

It's "MacRumors" for a reason! Rumors bring out the optimist and pessimist in us all!

Yeah, the adapter could be bulky, expensive, and easy to lose. Or it could be Apple-ossessive thin, reasonably-priced (or even free with the phone), and fairly secure - it's not all that easy to separate a headphone plug from a headphone jack. Note that the standard Lightning plug contains a chip. The A/D D/A converters required are not very large at all, these days.

For anyone interested in taking musical "notes", I released an app in a similar niche a few weeks ago. It's called Composer's Sketchpad, and it's meant to be a sort of modern take on sheet music. (Alternatively: a "doodly" sequencer.) You're presented with a giant canvas (representing time and pitch) that you can pan and zoom around, and you draw musical notes anywhere on the canvas with your finger or Apple Pencil. Notes can be bent to any pitch, allowing you to draw out curvy guitar solos and complex rhythms with ease. Over 100 instruments are available. There's also a free Lite version!

(I really like the gist of Music Memos, but as someone who sucks at singing or playing guitar, I prefer to take musical notes "directly", which is why I made my app.)

Switched to Mac about twelve years ago for making music. Honestly, I haven't been making that much music but still love how Apple offers great music making on computers and mobile.

Best update to GarageBand for iOS I've seen yet. Really loving the addition of plenty of music samples for the keyboard library.

I hope the OS X version will get the Live Loops update too.
