Hope that the 2-tier storage option is a sign of things to come with the next-gen iPhones.. Considering the amount of price gouging

No, it's not. It's LITERALLY the 2017 iPad Pro with a new name to show that it's both different from the regular iPad and the 2019 iPad Pro.

A) It's not literally the 2017 ipad pro, there are some features that have been removed while others have been added.

B) It has a new name. There you go. That's what has been added - a fourth named line of iPad.

C) There is no 2019 iPad Pro yet.

It technically is a change in the lineup, Air is back, as a mid-tier player, replacing the older iPad Pro with better specs and lower price.

That said, there will be confusion with the old air and new air for a couple of years
iPad Air 2 is 5 years old. What confusion could there be? This lineup is extremely simple now.

Did you read the article.? The 10.5 Pro was discontinued TODAY, you could purchase it from Apple's website up until this very point.

I already conceded I was wrong on this point. Would you like me to sing the "I am very sorry song" to further atone for my sins? :)

So iPad Pro is the only tablet compatible with Apple Pencil 2? Cue the Apple fanboys that don't see a problem with this and argue price points. Apple has been failing miserably these past 4 years!

"Apple has been failing miserably." LOL. Yes, they've failed to meet their customers needs and wants so badly they've sold tens of millions of iPads and hundreds of millions of iPhones each one of those years. When will they ever figure out what consumers want??? If they would only listen to the people on MR forums they might stop failing so badly.

I haven't read every comment in the thread, but I did manage to read the first sentence in the article.

Dissapointed, but that was to be expected with the Apple of the past few years.

The way I look at it is Apple could’ve refreshed the cheap iPad this year, so for the $170 price premium, we are getting an A12 vs. A11, a better/bigger screen (laminated, wide gamut, true tone), improved selfie camera and 64gb base storage. Is that worth 50% more to most people?

Also, it’s long past time for quad speakers to be a standard feature across the entire iPad line. These are primarily media consumption devices for most people, especially the cheaper ones.

So honest question, if they're the same price would the old 10.5 Pro or new 10.5 Air be a better model?

I wish they used screen-sizes in the names, instead of meaningless words like "air" and "mini." Or with the "regular" iPad, what does absence of "air" mean? iPad Vacuum?

This would be a lot clearer:
7.9" iPad
9.7" iPad
10.5" iPad
11" iPad Pro
12.9" iPad Pro

Not hard to follow, but it's not part of Steve Jobs philosophy. He always wanted a clear product line and Apple is becoming more and more Samsung-ish by applying diversification. Its good for business, but I liked that there was only ONE iPhone in the line-up e.g.

I think users can distinguish between three similar choices:

Good: iPad, $329, 9.7”
Better: iPad Air, $499, 10.5”
Best: iPad Pro, $799, 11.0”

iPhone XR: LCD, $749, 6.1”
iPhone XS: OLED, $999, 5.8”
iPhone XS Max, OLED, $1,099, 6.5”

Lightest: MacBook
Cheapest: MacBook Air
Fastest: MacBook Pro

It’s great for consumer choice, also good for business as you mention:

Gen 2 Pencil requires a brand new chasis. This is not a new iPad. They just took the old 10.5 Pro and made a budget version of it. Which is fine I guess but these are definitely old designs.

Or they could just sell some sort of wireless charger/pairing thing for 2nd gen Pencil. I can't imagine it being very difficult to make.

While they're at it make the 1st gen compatible with the new iPad Pros because the only thing stopping that is a compatible USB-C to Lightning adapter. **** Apple's inconsistent support for their own damn peripherals and deprecating the 1st gen Pencil so quickly even though its only real fault is inconvenient pairing/charging.

New iPad Air vs 10.5” Pro

Air:
  • Faster A12 Processor
  • 13g lighter
  • Cheaper than the now-discontinued Pro
  • Possibly only 1st Gen Touch ID, products with 2nd Gen Touch ID were specifically noted in their tech specs page
  • Old, 1st Gen iPad Pro camera
  • No camera bump
Pro:
  • ProMotion Display
  • Brighter display (600nits v 500nits)
  • Quad Speakers
  • 4K optically-stabilised video, 12MP photos from f1.8 aperture camera
So yeah, the Air is cheaper than the 10.5” Pro and it gives up quite a few features but it’s cheaper. I think keeping the quad speakers would’ve made a massive difference to perceived value but oh well.

The mini is a tough pill to swallow. Sure it’s faster but would a mini user notice the A12 over the A10? It’s more expensive for half the storage and Pencil support.

Do we know how much RAM the new Air has vs. the Pro?

This is my complaint as well.

Amen. People assume other people are idiots and can't spend a few minutes to read up and decide what is best cost/benefit purchase for them. The thing I'd add to your charts would be "small, medium and large." Millions of people will buy the mini because it is an extraordinary travel device.

So is this like the iPad Pro but maybe just a little bit more expensive to produce because they use more aluminum and Gorilla glass?

So at least no new aspect ratios or screen sizes (so much for the 10.2" rumours) :) , but it does leave the 11" pro as a bit of an oddity, which wouldn't matter except for the slow app updates.
The 2018 A10-based $329 ipad is still due for an update but maybe it won’t be this year. I speculated in a prior post that Apple could well keep the A10 another year, it’s sufficiently fast for its intended target market (and for its price).

When the $329 entry level iPad is updated, whether later this year or early next year, that’s when I think we’ll see the 10.2”. Maybe Apple will shrink the top/bottom bezels a bit and it’ll come with the new 10:7 aspect ratio, but maybe it’ll keep the 4:3, hard to say. The top and bottom bezels are quite large; if width stayed the same and the top/bottom bezels were reduced by about .2” (5mm) each, you’d have the new 10:7 aspect ratio with a resolution of approx 2196 x 1536.

Forwarding. DH has the 9.7” iPP. He may be interested in this because of the price point and slightly bigger screen. We were just talking about this over the weekend, too.

It's clear that marketing has gone totally bonkers at Apple along with design. Incredibly lazy very very old design that should have been laid to rest and that damn 'Air' name reappearing.
Total lack of direction.
With the beautiful design of the iPad Pro, this old and very dated design needed to go.
Nice try Apple at trying to sell this old timer but c'mon, you're insulting your customers.
The direction seems pretty clear to me. Rather than have a single tier of devices, they have 2... a basic tier and a pro tier. Those who want a basic tier are not "insulted" by the non-Pro models. Those who want a pro tier with a distinction have the Pro models...which are very unique and will never be mistaken for the base models.

Seems to me the only ones who are "insulted" are the ones who want an iPad Pro at a base iPad price.
