no loop for the 16gb model

What??? They can't even include the loop for the 16gb model, and this has to be bought separately? Seriously, how many cents does that look cost to be manufactured?

Hopefully this sets a precedent whereby storage doubling is $50, and not $100 (which is obscene, frankly).

For 16 to 32 or 32 to 64 maybe. But not for 64 to 128 and especially not for 128 to 256 (not seeing that config anytime soon).

As I see it,
16Gb: base price
add 16Gb (32Gb total): + $50
add 32Gb (64Gb total): + $50
add 64Gb (128Gb total): + $100
add 128Gb (256Gb total): + $200 (not likely)

I'm only seeing this on the US online store so far. Every other country I checked shows the old 16 GB model as "unavailable" and appears to have the old pricing for the 32 GB and 64 GB models.

Spain's store has 16BG unavailable, but 32GB and 64GB already have the new prices (249 and 299 € respectively, which is roughly 339 and 407 USD - bear in mind prices in the EU mandatorily include VAT and other taxes).

An extra 64GB of storage for $51? Good luck with that.

We'd be lucky enough to have
32 @ $199
64 @ $299
128 @ $399
which is probably already too optimistic

For Apple, probably. But these are essentially just singular flash memory chips, not SSD's with a controller board and multiple separate chips for extra speed and reliability.

You can buy 32GB class 10 SD (90MB/s read/45MB/s write) cards for $17. 64GB for $35. And that is the normal price, which also includes the SD card housing, packaging and shipping while still leaving a profit for the card manufacturer and retailer. That means the real price difference for Apple is a couple dollars at best, given the bulk that they buy them in.

But then again, this is Apple and they do like their high profit margins.

I think this will be the iPod Touch's last hurrah. This is a dead product line.

no its not, retail stores and manufacturers/brand manufacturers (showrooms, trade shows)

are ALL moving towards mobile devices to take orders and scan items.

No body wants to pay for a $700 dollar off contract iPhone, PLUS the $500 dollar Linea Pro barcode scanner/credit card swiper, when theres absolutely no need for an iPhone.

Our back end product sales pitch is based off this. they get rid of it, it gives more leeway for android products to step into this market.

Give me a Nano with 32 or even better 64 Gigs! I just want to listen to all my music...

...says the person without kids. IMHO this will continue to be the perfect gateway drug for 10-year-old kids, before they are ready to begin clamoring for an iPhone.

Since there weren't really any design changes I wonder if this is just clearing out inventory for new models coming later this year?

I think they'll be using the A5 until they discontinue the iPod Touch line...

if you think this you're not a regular iPod touch user. i've been carrying one in my pocket for 3 years. why? no monthly fee! Phone calls I don't make much, especially while i'm able to contact people via texts, email and FaceTime audio. I carry with me a cheap prepaid phone which maybe cost me $25 every 90 days. This is who the IPT is for alone with teens.

Public wifi is also becoming more available. if you used an IPT regularly you'd be amazed at how many places are around.

If you want I can call you for free and tell you about it via FaceTime audio.

I love how the "Days since last release" gets reset to "0" in the buyers guide because they dropped the price. They didn't update the hardware at all. This is apples plan, to get the buyers guide updated.

Now when will they drop the price on the 5yr old ipod classic. I mean really?

Well that was quick,lol.

The iPod will never die. These make great gifts for kids. Specially for parents who don't want there kids to have a cell phone just yet. I've personally bought these for gifts for my niece and friends kids.

For those that don't see the new models or new pricing online yet....relax! This is breaking news that was just found out 8 minutes ago. Lol...

You seem to have forgotten that Apple themselves have actively been dumbing down the iPt's not to come even close to iPhones. This has been very clear ever since the iPod touch 4G (which was delivered with a far inferior screen compared to the iPhone 4; the iPd 5G downgrades were even worse). Before the 4G, iPt's were even better than contemporary iPhones (both the iPt2G and the iPt3G were considerably faster than the iPhone 3G and 3GS, respectively). Prolly this is why Apple started seriously dumbing down these devices to force for example avid gamers needing fast CPU's and GPU's go for the iPhone.

Come on, it comes in a two pack, yo'. That's double the cents.

They updated the 16gb model.

This is still a phenomenal product and it's quite amazing pricing now starts at just $199 for all that incredible technology. This is a great device for those who want the best of mobile iOS without cellular service.

How nice of them do this now after I already bought my daughter a silver one with one camera for Christmas.

I kept asking her a month after that if she wanted one with two cameras and she said 'I'm fine with it.' She's not very good at using the front facing camera, so I should've exchanged it anyway.

The Canadian store has prices which are about the same as the US (but no 16 GB model) - tax is added at the checkout, like the US store.

The Australia and New Zealand stores still have the old prices, e.g. NZ is NZ$459 and NZ$599 (including GST), which is what they were in late 2012 when the 5th gen iPod Touch was introduced. After subtracting GST, that works out to US$349 and US$456. Even with the typical markup of about 10%, no way are these the new prices.

Actually I used my 64gb iPod Touch 4th gen up until last week when I sold it for 190 bucks on ebay. It basically became my at the gym and home music device. On the go I have my iPhone 5S or my iPad rMini.

I didn't say they are ending the iPod line tomorrow... but I think the A5 is the last updated chip they're putting in it. iOS8 will run on it and it's possible that iOS9 will as well. My 10 year old uses a 4th gen iPod Touch (which they kept up to date until last fall's iOS7) and an iPad 2 since she was 8. No complaints from her. She'll probably use the iPod Touch for 2 more years. It plays music just fine at a decent speed and the iPad 2 does all that and runs iOS7 and will run 8... you seeing my point?

Why update their slowest selling item? Adding a A6-A8 chip would be just more of a burden on the bottom line, not that much of a sales boost (yes they'll sell 1 million but per every 10 million iPhones) and lastly making a updated iPod Touch just eats into their iPhone sales, which are a 4X profit margin over the maybe 2X profit margin they make on the iPod Touch. It's just not fiscally worth them doing in any way.

If anything, they'll update the RAM on the iPod Touch just to satisfy the minimum requirements for future iOS models.

So far this feels like a promotion to get rid of old stock, before new models get introduced in September/October.

Apple should not have 3 months worth of stock sitting somewhere. They're not that kind of company.

While they probably are getting ready to refresh the iPod Touch line this fall... I seriously doubt that they have warehouses full of iPods they're afraid they can't get rid of.

iPod Touch sales have been slowly declining for years. Knowing this... Apple simply wouldn't produce as many.

It would have been nice if they dropped an A6 into these.

The A5 is getting pretty dated at this point - it's the chip that originally shipped in the iPhone 4s.

I assume they've boosted the CPU too as previosu gen iPod Touch's with IOS 7.1.1 runs like muck and honey. Really slow and jerky.

Any price reduction is good news.

People need to understand that Apple has no competition in this market. They didn't need to do anything here. It's not as if there are other competitors like the iPod touch that are nipping at their heels.

Now all they need to do is drop the price of the iPod nano to $99 dollars.
