I'm only seeing this on the US online store so far. Every other country I checked shows the old 16 GB model as "unavailable" and appears to have the old pricing for the 32 GB and 64 GB models.

Usually the online store would go down while the distributed network of servers got updated, then everyone would see the new pricing for each country. Has Apple changed the way they update the online store?

If you actually read the press release you would it states "iPod touch 16GB is available starting in the US today and worldwide in the coming days..."

So you'll get the new prices in about a week. Most likely Tuesday.

Apple obviously believes that the iPod Touch is a dead product line as well, or they would have updated the iPods with an A7 processor but they chose not too. A great many people love the iPod Touch, and many may still benefit, but Apple would rather have people buy an iPad or iPhone.

Which leads me to believe we'll see something new in iPod land this fall. I believe it was either John Gruber or Rene Ritchie who tweeted they've heard rumblings that Apple may have three events in fall. I could see an iPhone/wearables event, an iPad/Mac event and an Apple TV/iPod event. Unless something like Apple TV is being pushed to 2015 I think there's simply too much stuff to fit in only two events.

Is this apples amazing product plan this year? just barf out the pretty much same products they´ve had with slight modifications for a lower price. It´s ALL they released this year: MB air with less than 10% speed increase, iphone 5c 16gb model, a crappy iMac model, and now a slightly modified ipod touch....talk about riding on old waves.

Yawn...

Hardly. We're only just approaching midway through the year and these have been silent updates.

The big software updates announced at WWDC were good, and there will be decent hardware upgrades to come, most likely.

Apple Launches New 16GB iPod Touch for $199, Drops 32/64GB Models to $249/$299

This is classic apple. Just as they offer the non-retina mini for a lower price, but still having the retina mini.

They currently sell the iPhone 4S at a lower price and offer the 5C & 5S.

To me they'll do the same thing here. Keep this 199.99 entry level iPod touch, but offer the newer updated iPod touch later this fall for a higher price.

Yes, I suspect we'll get new iPod touch this fall. And then the A5 version will be gone. Maybe this 5.5" rumored device will be a new iPod touch geared towards gaming. Metal was announced for a reason. And I think that reason will become clear this fall.

I think you are 100% correct about Metal and Apple will want to monetise this improvement in mobile gaming with a new iPod touch model. However, I don't believe we'll see it in 2014. In my opinion this would cannibalise any new iPhone purchase whether its the possible two new models coming in September or late adopters of the iPhone 5S. The iPhones cost more and the profit margins are larger.

I would think the demand for new iPhone models goes down six months after launch. Therefore I could see a new iPod Touch 4.7inch and or 5.5 inch models released in April 2015. Across all mobile iDevices have A7 to make them all 64 bit.

I also believe the new Apple TV will have A7 64 bit processor and you'll be able to play some great games on your big screen tv. Download games from the app store which you can play both on your iphone/apple tv and with handoff/iCloud if you pause the game on one medium you can pick it up from another in the same place.

No. Why do people keep saying that? Just because Apple releases minor updates to some products doesn't mean that they don't have an amazing product plan for the year (and next year). 2014 and 2015 will be huge years for Apple's product lines.

I know, just whining because I want to see something awesome from apple, and it feels like ages now. WWDC and their software updates were awesome though, but unless you want to be a beta tester, nothing has come out to the public yet. I'm getting impatient for something new :) . And none of apples releases this year has given my wallet any temptations at all!

Decreasing prices for Flash Storage upgrades is a good sign!!

I hope this means:

(US prices w/ 2 year Carrier Contract)

iPhone 5C 16GB - $0
iPhone 5S 16GB - $99
iPhone 6 4.7inch 32GB/64GB - $199/$299
iPhone 6 5.5inch 32GB/64GB/128GB - $299/$399/$499

Or maybe they won't continue selling the iPhone 5S.
and in its place there will be 16GB iPhone 4.7inch for $99?

.... nah, this probably won't happen to good to be true

Here's why I think that. I could be wrong, but this is just my opinion.

I think you meant 5.5" for your last tier.

Because people want to be snarky and think its a clever comment. They're all Mark Gurman wannabes.

Would it cost them that much to bundle the iPod touch loop with the 16GB model? I'm not complaining, just wondering...

How's this for a prediction:

September event: New iPhone hardware + iPads.

October event: New iPod touches, Macs then... iWATCH!

Remember Tim Cook saying he wish he'd delayed the new iMac until after new year? If anything will be delayed, it will be Macs.

if you think this you're not a regular iPod touch user. i've been carrying one in my pocket for 3 years. why? no monthly fee!

$199, no required monthly fee, but if feel like it insert SIM card then it is an actual phone.

https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Moto_G_Google_Play_edition_16GB?id=moto_g_16gb

(and likely dropping next year at 16GB http://www.theverge.com/2014/5/13/5711042/motorola-moto-g-with-lte-and-moto-e-launch ). Unlocked phones are in the iPod Touch price zone now. In a year, Android One will be in place and they will be in the sub $100 zone (if going to handicap with 3-4 year old SoC infrastructure. ) :

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014...e-phones-with-no-bloatware-automatic-updates/

Won't deploy in USA at first but will probably bleed on over a year or so.

If just don't want the monthly fee just don't put the SIM card in or let it run out and turn cell broadband off.

I carry with me a cheap prepaid phone which maybe cost me $25 every 90 days. This is who the IPT is for alone with teens.

Same strategy with one device if just step outside iOS.

Sure not everyone is going to go Android, but the overall market dynamics that the iPod Touch is sitting in is being shaped by non Apple products at this point.

iPod and iPod Touch sales are either shrinking (clearly in former case) or essentially stagnant ( indications that is were the latter are at best). As long as it is a non growth product then Apple will stop putting effort into it (e.g, iPod Classic). The question is whether Apple is going to ride a cash cow into the ground with the iPod Touch (e.g., just keep churning out A5 on legacy Samsung fab ) or actually try to compete.

Be patient! There falls seems like it's going to be crammed full of hardware releases. Presumably iPhone, iPad and iWatch will get the bulk of the attention, though.

Trying ;) hoping for a retina iMac & mb air too though most likely I suspect they won't appear until next year.

I still don't see why anybody would buy this outdated iPod in 2014...

The "Back to" or "Off to " school promo discounts they run most Summers to early Fall. "Buy Mac and throw in some device".....

Folks aren't buying it.... that is why they put more value into it ( added a camera) and lowered the price of the other ones. If the drop off in sales was unexpected ( perhaps they are asleep at the wheel, but this really shouldn't be surprising since there is lots more competition now in this space) then this move is a short term 'band-aid' until they can come up with a real fix.

It probably would be a necessary band-aid if had not kneecapped the whole iPod Touch line-up with a non update last time. A larger than unusually large group of folks are probably sitting on sidelines waiting for an update. So sales are tanking even more than Apple projected. It isn't so much that why would they not buy in 2014, but more so why they would not buy in late Fall 2013 also. This drop disconnected from projections probably started a several months back.

This is probably just a triage the bleeding move.
