if you think this you're not a regular iPod touch user. i've been carrying one in my pocket for 3 years. why? no monthly fee! Phone calls I don't make much, especially while i'm able to contact people via texts, email and FaceTime audio. I carry with me a cheap prepaid phone which maybe cost me $25 every 90 days.

So why don't you just get an unlocked iPhone (5 and 5c's can be found pretty cheap on eBay) and drop the cheap prepaid SIM card into it? No monthly fee there either.

My guess is by the end of the year Apple will not be selling any iOS devices with A5 chip. Maybe a budget iPhone with A6 chip but everything else will be 64-bit.

Any price reduction is good news.

People need to understand that Apple has no competition in this market. They didn't need to do anything here. It's not as if there are other competitors like the iPod touch that are nipping at their heels.

Now all they need to do is drop the price of the iPod nano to $99 dollars.
Agreed on both accounts.

If you all read the press release Apple released you'd know it's only available in the US from today and worldwide in the coming days.

i'm only seeing this on the us online store so far. Every other country i checked shows the old 16 gb model as "unavailable" and appears to have the old pricing for the 32 gb and 64 gb models.

Usually the online store would go down while the distributed network of servers got updated, then everyone would see the new pricing for each country. Has apple changed the way they update the online store?

Read the press release!

Apple should not have 3 months worth of stock sitting somewhere. They're not that kind of company.

While they probably are getting ready to refresh the iPod Touch line this fall... I seriously doubt that they have warehouses full of iPods they're afraid they can't get rid of.

iPod Touch sales have been slowly declining for years. Knowing this... Apple simply wouldn't produce as many.

Yes, that was a bad theory on my part. I'm now wondering if it is a summer promotion in North America and Europe only, since none of the Asia/Pacific stores I've checked so far are showing a price change (NZ, Australia and Hong Kong; Japan is more expensive than the original launch price).

End of THIS year? Highly unlikely. The iPod Touch will still be sold with the A5 until it can no longer support the most recent iOS. Since it's listed as one that supports iOS8 it has at very very least another year but I predict 2 and then they'll move onto a new line.

They're better off focusing on making a high margin iWatch/iPod Nano with better features or some sort of hybrid of the two devices.

Would be seriously cool on the Mac lineup.
Say, going from a 512GB SSD to a 1TB for $50. :)

Hell... I'd pay the full $100 to go from 512gb to 1tb

I've always dug on the iPT, especially in the current day where so many WiFi communication channels are available (Msg, Skype, Hangouts, etc.).

An outright purchase for $199, no recurring fees for using it, great display and camera, super portable. I’ve recommended them to friends several times, even over an iPad mini for kids.

Yeah, I’d be willing to bet the same, and that we’ll see an A6 version released at the iPhone event this year. :) No supporting evidence, just a total guess :D

no its not, retail stores and manufacturers/brand manufacturers (showrooms, trade shows)

are ALL moving towards mobile devices to take orders and scan items.

No body wants to pay for a $700 dollar off contract iPhone, PLUS the $500 dollar Linea Pro barcode scanner/credit card swiper, when theres absolutely no need for an iPhone.

Our back end product sales pitch is based off this. they get rid of it, it gives more leeway for android products to step into this market.

So apple should keep a product line running cause someone is using their devices as barcode scanners.... And god forbid that android capture this market?? I doubt apple will battle this one out...

Thanks. I already checked but didn't see a press release, now it has appeared for me (on the US site). The joys of slow updates of content to distributed web servers. Without that clue, it looked like a change only in some regions. More patience needed. :)

Highly doubt it. How long was the iPad 2 around for , iPhone 4 still on sale, and I highly doubt a new touch is coming. Only the latest and greatest will move to A6.

Yes, I suspect we'll get new iPod touch this fall. And then the A5 version will be gone. Maybe this 5.5" rumored device will be a new iPod touch geared towards gaming. Metal was announced for a reason. And I think that reason will become clear this fall.

Latest and greatest what will move to A6?

I think this will be the iPod Touch's last hurrah. This is a dead product line.

Not to me it isn't! And at 100,000,000 cumulative sales over 6 years (as of May 2013) I'd hasten to say it's not dead for a lot of others too.

I love iOS but I don't want to pay through the nose for an iPhone.

What??? They can't even include the loop for the 16gb model, and this has to be bought separately? Seriously, how many cents does that look cost to be manufactured?

Has anyone ever used the loop? Seems like 99% would just get thrown in the trash to me.

No one is forcing anyone to buy one. Sad how people feel the need to complain about everything. The same whiners who never designed a product or ran a company. This place should be called macwhinybitch.com

Traditionally Apple has only lowered the price of the iOS devices when a new product is released or if they decide to just drop the price... never a price drop and then a product release a few months later. They want to sell the iPod Touch at the highest profit margin until the next one is released and then drop.
This fact alone (or opinion if you choose not to believe me) disproves that there will not be a new iPod this year. IF (a very big if) they do plan to release a new iPod (and I doubt they will) it will be in, at very very soonest, a year's time with the A7 to make them all 64 bit. But that would have to be dependent on if they plan to make iOS9 64 bit only, iOS8 will run on both 32 and 64 bit processors.

Nice, but still disappointing through the first 6 months of the year all we have from Apple in hardware is a low spec, lower priced iMac and updated iPod Touch prices with an update to the lowest end model.

Apple obviously believes that the iPod Touch is a dead product line as well, or they would have updated the iPods with an A7 processor but they chose not too. A great many people love the iPod Touch, and many may still benefit, but Apple would rather have people buy an iPad or iPhone.

Didn't Apple make a minor update to the MBP before the rMBP was introduced at WWDC? Anyway I can't see Apple going two years with basically nothing new in iPod land. Unless they're planing to replace the touch with something new. There are lots of things Apple is doing now that they haven't done in the past. 5C was a break from what Apple had done in the past. I think anything is possible under Apple 3.0.

Nice price on the 16gb. :) Think I know what I might get my niece and nephew this year for Christmas. :D
Nice same day rumor and conformation also!

Very cheap wall mounted home automation screen :)

Or I could just use my phone which is almost always in my pocket. That will also keep kids from jacking with it, and in iOS 8 I can tell Siri to control it.

So no iPod Touch updates this autumn, or are they trying to sell off the rest of their stock? The problem I have with the iPod Touch hardware is that it uses the A5, which came out in 2011. Why does that matter, you ask? Because game developers are still very likely to support it, which means that many will focus on lowest common denominator hardware and not push iOS game graphics to the limit. In some games you can just dial back the effects but certain types of games, like larger open-world games, just aren't possible with less memory. And some developers leave out more complex physics engines altogether because having it on one device and not on another can affect game play.
