Am I right in saying there's no more 21.5 inch iMac options with a discrete GPU anymore?

If so that is so terrible. I like the 21.5 size. Being forced to jump to the 27 inch just to get a dGPU would suck so much for my next iMac.

Well, according to Apple's official site, that "2 minutes of charging for a day's use" is debatable at best. This is what they say on THIS page:

"A minute of charging delivers up to an hour of usage." (Scroll down to the section tiled "Change Is Good. Except For Batteries"*

So if 1 minute can only guarantee you "up to an hour" it's very likely that 2 minutes is not going to give you a whole days' usage. I guess they weren't selling enough of the Apple branded rechargeable batteries so they've effectively air-brushed them out. Yes, you can still find them if you dig, but they're hardly a top-line item anymore

* And while we're at it, why can't they actually write that section header properly?!? Put a damned comma in there instead of a full stop!

The MacBook Retina-style keyboard is terrifying me. I thought Apple understood it was a compromise, but it seems they think it is better. Now I am envisioning a nightmare scenario a year from now when if you want an Apple laptop, you have no choice but to use one.

Edit: Although it's "lower profile," it's not using the Retina butterfly mechanism.

I don't care about Force Touch enough to blow $129, and I think it looks worse (white? Great, now it'll look as dirty as my keyboard). I don't need it any bigger, either--it already takes up too much room on my desk (I use it for gestures next to a mouse).

Man, the one I want is $3,400. Wondering about the Skylake processors and the R9 card. Also, I wonder if the flash storage is faster now?

My thoughts...
Keyboard - twice as expensive, no new functionality, still no backlit keys like Logitech's cheaper K810/811
Mouse - $20 more, no new functionality, hope you remember to charge it periodically as you'll be stuck if the battery dies.
Trackpad - One new trick, now costs as much as a Chromebook. Sad.
All use rechargeable batteries, so now instead of swapping AAs periodically I can juggle a Lightning cable between my peripherals. Also non-replaceable, so I get to throw out these ridiculously expensive peripherals when the batteries die.

21.5" iMac
No Skylake on the 21.5
Integrated video for a >4k screen? It's about as good as you'll find for integrated, but still...
Despite the huge drops in component prices over the last year, Apple's upgrade prices haven't changed in years.
256GB SSD upgrade for $200 (a decent one costs ~$75, or about $30 more than a the 1TB HDD you're upgrading from)
Fusion drive is down to 24GB(!) of flash on the 1TB model and that 24GB costs $100 extra. Yes, that's over $4.00/GB when flash prices are close to $0.25/GB.
16GB RAM upgrade for $200 (again, the extra 8GB costs around $30).
Rumors of soldered RAM? Have to wait for the teardown. The last model was a pain to disassemble but at least possible to upgrade.

27" iMac
Skyline... maybe? Strange since it requires a new socket/motherboard chipset. Have to wait for a teardown to confirm.
Fusion Drive finally in the base config, at least on the top model; lower models are sold with spinning disks and the pathetic 24GB fusion drive. Upgrades are ridiculously prices as mentioned before.
Only 8GB of RAM stock? The MBP has 16GB, seems like this should too. Not a big deal since you can upgrade yourself.
Still no Type C ports, so no TB3, etc. Yes, Dell is launching TB3 systems before Apple. Sad.
The M395X looks like a rebadge of the old M295X, which wasn't a great graphics card to begin with. It doesn't match the GTX 980M, much less the new 990M (which is basically just a cooler-running desktop 980)

I can see why they didn't spend time at an event for this; this is the most depressing Apple update I've seen in a while, and that includes last year's Mini fiasco. I swear they're trying to kill off their desktop line...

I don't know … How many Mac users already have a Lightning cable already permanently plugged in to their Macs? I'm betting quite a few.

Using the same cable saves a free USB port (or plugging in every time you need to charge). Plus, you get an extra Lightning cable.

Cutting down on ports and abandoning older Macs is the latest annoying thing Apple does.
I get that technology moves on, but it's still annoying. Don't trust the cloud other than dropbox.
iCloud meh!
I have lots of Firewire and USB peripherals which I don't want to buy again.

Luckily OWC and others came to the rescue with some USB and other docks.
OWC has by far the most versatile amounts of ports and their price incl. cables is very good.

Some of the ports in their docks even charge.

You are (Sadly) correct.

That worries me also...

Always felt like the Magic Mouse was trying to give me Carpal Tunnel after having used the prior mice for years with no issue. Doesn't appear to be much hope on the mouse, the rest maybe. :)
Better get a Trackpad then, it helped me with my similar problems.

Yes an extra cable that ONLY Mac users will have use for as opposed to adhering to a standard. What a way to increase the size of;
  1. The hole in your bank account, Tim will be rubbing his hands together like the legs of a cricket.
  2. The hole in the ozone layer, collateral damage right Tim?

Yes it's the $10-$20 cable that causes a hole in your bank account, not the ~$2000 iMac :) If the standard sucks,

It is faster, they are claiming 1800 MBps reads now.

Yup in fact it's the same rebadged M295x.

This makes me a bit sad. The M295X throttles in the iMac within a few seconds of use, I assume the same will happen with the new ones if it's the same.

And I've held off a whole year waiting for this after returning my last 5K iMac... :(

I was wrong, it's not the same as the Retina keyboard. That has the butterfly mechanism. Jason Snell on Twitter says it's better than the Retina, but it may be a downgrade from the current normal version.

I was really hoping for a wireless keyboard version with a 10 key and/or maybe backlit keys.
(I have the logitech k750. but was hoping for an Apple keyboard..that said the Logitech was only $29.00 on sale)

Also, does $129.00 feel a bit much for anyone else for the trackpad?

Although not quite as pretty. The k750 is a great keyboard. With the solar charging, I have never had a problem in three years. Love the logitech M705 mouse over anything apple has as well. Can't stand the magic mouse. Do people really like using track pads? The first thing I do with my laptop is plug a mouse into it. Trackpads just don't fee ergonomic.
