It looks like I can order the 27" at $1799, upgrade to 1TB flash and 16mb of ram for a total of $2090. Selecting the $1999 base model and adding the 16mb option brings it to $2199. The machines specs look to be identical at that point but upgrading from the $1799 model saves you $100 bucks. Am I missing something?
$1799 model = AMD Radeon R9 M380 with 2GB video memory
$1999 model = AMD Radeon R9 M390 with 2GB video memory

You are (Sadly) correct.
Thanks for the confirmation. This worries me. It seems Apple either knows what doesn't sell that well or is trying to upsell us.

  • Making the dGPU people fork out for a 27 inch to get a dGPU.
  • Not giving us an option for an extended magic keyboard, only the compact one
  • No force touch on the magic mouse 2. It'll come one day though
I don't know if I like how Apple is doing things. Apple give us way to many iPad SKUs and a mountain of watch band choices, but in it's core iMac and peripheral the options are severely limited. This makes me seriously think what to do now. As what I wanted - 21.5 with dGPU (I don't need retina) is not in existance anymore. I think I own the latest model 21.5 with a dGPU.

I think this is making all of us iMac people think long and hard over these new developments.

Lets be honest here... Apple kind of sucks lately. $129 trackpad is just insane... also, where it the damn Thunderbolt Display??? And why does it seem every time a model comes out, the customization gets smaller and smaller...

Maybe they're waiting for Thunderbolt III (since providing TB2 ports is moot at this stage). But I doubt it. Apple's game plan seems to be to force iMacs on everyone instead of offering more monitors OR to drive them to 3rd parties (maybe they didn't make enough profits; Tim seems to be all about profit so....)

Customization is probably slowing things down and that might mean less profit so to wean you off choices, they have been slowly dumbing down the Mac and hoping no one notices. They no fanatics would rather jump off a cliff than switch platforms so they figure they can just stick it to you and get away with and higher profit margins on crappier and crappier equipment. Premium prices without the premium features.

Despite some rabid fans, I think this is a bad move. Mac users aren't as dumb as Mr. Cook apparently thinks we are. But then does he even notice? He said long ago he stopped using Macs as much as possible and likes phones better so I'm afraid Macs are just a "let's cut as many corners on service and employees as possible" and hence the reduction in customization, etc.

I know but the comp is too large to return and re-set up as I had to do a BTO for the 1tb fusion drive. Also was purchased as a friends and family discount. Still, a bit upsetting as I legit had no idea that the 27 was going to be updated.
That's odd because everyone else on these boards was thinking there MIGHT be an update to the 27 -- especially with the 395X listed in OS X

Have a decked out 27" mid-2011. Been waiting for the replacement, which apparently will be another year. My "pull-the-trigger" items are Thunderbolt 3, DDR4 memory (ideally with the iMac supporting 64GB), and a 2TB SSD option for the 5K 27". Also, ideally, a 5K retina external display (hence desire for Thunderbolt 3).

I was wrong, it's not the same as the Retina keyboard. That has the butterfly mechanism. Jason Snell on Twitter says it's better than the Retina, but it may be a downgrade from the current normal version.

Still thats a pointless upgrade then... why on earth would Apple want to downgrade the typing experience?

Soooo...as far as the keyboard...no black keys, no backlit letters and numbers, not full size with number pad, no USB 3.0 for a wired version....but it IS thinner? Well how about that! /s

What the eff Apple??? OK Logitech, will you now please finally make your Bluetooth Easy-Switch Keyboard K811 extended with a number pad???

Yeah I don't really understand it either. They choose to still keep that huge black bezel on the iMac (this is 2015, right?). Ok, fine, whatever. But at least make the keys and mouse black too. The peripherals would look so much better.

That and who puts the recharge port on the bottom of a mouse? Apple, I guess.

Tim Cook after today's announcements

Yeah, I don't get why they exclude the numkey pad. Annoying...
Anyway, I am actually excited to get a new Magic Trackpad with Force Touch (and no batteries!). The question is, does it function over the USB when plugged in via Lightning? I had a **lot** of problems with the original Magic Trackpad and Bluetooth on my machine (mid-2012 Macbook Pro). Wouldn't want a replay of that irritation...

My thoughts...
Keyboard - twice as expensive, no new functionality, still no backlit keys like Logitech's cheaper K810/811
Mouse - $20 more, no new functionality
Trackpad - One new trick, now costs as much as a Chromebook.
All use rechargeable batteries, so now instead of swapping AAs periodically I can juggle a Lightning cable between my peripherals. Also non-replaceable, so I get to throw out these ridiculously expensive peripherals when the batteries die.

21.5" iMac
No Skylake on the 21.5
Integrated video for a >4k screen? It's about as good as you'll find for integrated, but still...
Despite the huge drops in component prices over the last year, Apple's upgrade prices haven't changed in years.
256GB SSD upgrade for $200 (a decent one costs ~75, or about $30 more than a the 1TB HDD you're upgrading from)
16GB RAM upgrade for $200 (again, the extra 8GB costs around $30)

27" iMac
Skyline... maybe? Strange since it requires a new socket/motherboard chipset. Have to wait for a teardown to confirm.
Fusion Drive finally in the base config; upgrades still ridiculous as mentioned before
Only 8GB stock? The MBP has 16GB, seems like this should too. Not a big deal if you can upgrade yourself, though.
Still no Type C ports, so no TB3, etc. Yes, Dell is launching TB3 systems before Apple. Sad.
The M395X looks like a rebadge of the old M295X, which wasn't a great graphics card to begin with. It doesn't match the GTX 980M, much less the new 990M (which is basically just a cooler-running desktop 980)

I can see why they didn't spend time at an event for this; this is the most depressing Apple update I've seen in a while, and that includes last year's Mini fiasco. I swear they're trying to kill off their desktop line...
I agree with a lot of what you wrote.

Based on the apple's support page, looks like the 27" does have up-gradable ram, while the 21.5" doesnt.

Some really amazing updates here. I'm kinda blown away by what Apple has launched today with only a press release.

Price is reasonable for pretty much everything considering all the amazing technology included with every product. The new keyboard and trackpad look incredible and are essential upgrades for all Mac owners.

The new iMacs are mind-blowing to me I'm definitely in for a new maxed out 27" Retina.

I agree with others it's disappointing that the 21.5" iMac still ships with a loathsome 5400rpm drive. They really do make a Mac run embarrassingly slow and I'm surprised Apple wants that kind of performance associated with a premium world-leading brand.

New keyboard with improved scissor mechanism (33% more stable) instead of buttefly mechanism developed for new macbook?? Is apple telling us "the macbook keyboard was a mistake"?? I was expecting these new releases to know more about future macbook pro redesign but...imac 5k with skylake but without ddr4 ram and usb c(thunderbolt 3)...very strange release today!

What do you need DDR4 for, or 64GB for? Who is going to buy a $1,000 display? I don't see a market for either of those, very niche options imo

The 5K Thunderbolt Display won´t launch until Display Port 1.3 arrives. The new Thunderbolt 3 was supposed to support 1.3 but finaly it is only 1.2 (x2) so... I´m not sure how Apple will handle this.
