Didn’t read it? Sure I did. Even allowing family members to use it 6TB and 12 TB seems ridiculous
Then you'd know the 6TB was for photographers and the higher options are for special need users. You don't see the value as you are none of those.

That said, the lower tiers are still pricier than they should for what is offered.
Ope! Even worse.
Agreed. Pitiful, it basically is enough to force you to pay at least $0.99 per month.

All obvious complaints aside, I am glad that there's an option to have more than 2TB of storage without having to subscribe to Apple One. My 2TB plan has about 400GB free, which probably will be used up by end of 2024.

$30/month for 6TB is cheaper than $43/month for Apple One Premier + 2TB extra storage.
This! That is why I didn't sign up for Apple One. I waited and waited and so glad I waited. 😂 Hello 6 TB!

So expensive. Do the math people. Storage is storage. Your data and your friends don't know if it is Apple storage or other Corps storage. $30-$60 each month will add up quick.

Calculate a few years vs.- say- buying the same storage in a couple of HDDs. Hint: 12TB HDD is retailing below $100 right now and you could OWN that 12TB instead of forever renting it.

If you extrapolate that math out for only a few years, your next iPhone is in there and probably your next Mac too.

But for those who need it, more options are always good. Enjoy!

Do note that you need at least two with four or six preferred, NAS device, time to set it up... Not to mention backups of this device. It adds up really quick.

True, but it's on the web, syncs from anywhere, no mechanical parts that could break, no additional apps to install and configure to access the drive (VPN) and to synchronize.

I guess they want us to buy the 2TB in addition to the 200GB Apple One family plan. Apple admitted by adding these higher storage plans that with larger phones with higher quality cameras that the plans were needed. But they still think a family can share 200GB.

I’m curious to see if these options come to Apple One users.
We're an Apple One, 4-user household. Last year, I increase our shared storage from 2 TB to 4 TB, which is an additional $10/mo on top of my Apple One monthly. As we're only just cracking the 2 TB threshold, I'm gonna ride this out and see what Apple does next with AO.

Do that math and then compare it over the 5-10 years HDD drives in a personal NAS will likely function at no subscription cost. This is only 6 or 12TB options, so build the NAS with equivalent storage for reasonable head-to-head comparisons. It will certainly be a one-time cost up front to buy the NAS & drives... but it doesn't take that long at these rates for renting storage cost to overtake owning storage cost.

I've run my own Synology-based NAS cloud for about 10 years now. One HDD failure in 10 years (which doesn't take down the cloud and is easily replaced & reintegrated). No subscription fees. And I make that same NAS do all kinds of other services for me too. For instance, it doubles as a whole house DVR for all the AppleTVs via the Channels DVR saving much money vs. various forms of TV service and DVR fees.

Setup was answering questions in a simple wizard. Seems like it took about 30 minutes ONCE, all those years ago.

KEY file backups are via Time Machine to two 20TB drives: one onsite and one stored offsite, which are regularly rotated to keep the one offsite up to date. No subscription fees.

I used to think like that but I like having iCloud Photo Library. My wife and I are both shutterbugs and we have a ton of photos and videos. We have a shared library as well. We are using almost 4TB among our family members now. We got 2TB through Apple One and a standalone 2TB plan as well. I wish there was a 4TB plan since we would like to go to a total of 6TB. We like Apple One since we use all of the services.
