Exactly! The same goes for Journals, which would benefit greatly from being available on macOS or iPadOS. Do they not use their own products and services? I think the iPad is just a photo prop in Tim Cook’s office whenever he does another fluff interview.

Yeah, I stopped using the Journal app because of it only being available on iPhone. When I’m at home, I prefer to use my iPad or Mac.

No Journal app, on iPad, is so bizarre

Like ... hello Apple ... people might like to use the Apple Pencil and "write in their journal"?

Kind of like your punctuation 😉

Because, without Apple, you'd have no social life! And, no memories of it.

Right! 🙈 ❌

I have iCloud+, but I think it's hilarious that invite creation is behind a paywall.
I think it’s a good idea, otherwise people might complain of Apple being too “monopolistic”. EU will require Apple to open the app to anyone, so they can use Apple’s servers for free. Now we are technically subscribing to this optional service.

All these random one-off apps always fall off the radar quickly and never get updated.

File this under the one employee who had a neat idea, they’re allowed to make a cool app. Then it goes nowhere
Abandonware is so common with Apple nowadays. They have an excuse for apps bundled with the OS to only receive updates when the OS does, but for standalone apps, there’s no reason for them to never update them.

Probably one of those cute ideas that will go nowhere. Discontinued in a few years, I’m calling it.
That's my first impression too - the idea has some potential for some crowds, but really the forced tie-in with Apple services is probably what's going to prevent it from taking off. Typical business-first thinking, no value for actual consumers to use this.

Such a strange thing to be spending resources and time on, given the overall product and software landscape at Apple
It’s from the same caliber as genmoij and image playgrounds. Now you know what the target group is.

The article says that the invites are created with Apple Intelligence in mind. Does this mean it’s only available for the 15 pro and up?

Expensive toys for the target group 🥴

Apple is in the same situation with iPad they were in with the Mac several years ago. They have no idea why the iPad exists, who iPad is marketed towards, and who is buying them. Makes you wish for appleOS and MacPad sooner rather than later to clean up this mess of a product line.

Agreed, when it first launched it was advertised as an inbetween device that slotted between iPhone and Mac, then they began pushing it as a full on Mac replacement for a while (“what’s a computer?”) but seem intent on drip feeding more powerful OS features into iPadOS that frustrates a lot of users who seem to want to replace a Mac with an iPad.

Other than the splash screen when opening it at first there’s no examples / templates - why, should be like pages or even what’s shown in the splash screen & I see :apple:Weather mentioned, never knew that was a thing now.

Think about every app, service, feature that Apple has rolled out over the last few years, all of them are designed to lock you in and eventually start extracting recurring subscription revenue from you:

iCloud+ Storage - Subscription revenue
Satellite SMS - Eventually subscription revenue
Apple Intelligence - Eventually subscription revenue
Journal App - Lock in
Passwords App - Lock in
Apple Wallet - Lock in
Health App - Lock in
Apple Music - Lock in
Invites - Lock in
iMessage - Lock in
Airtags - Lock in (if I bought a bunch of airtags and they only work with apple devices, guess what I am not going to buy an android phone)

Yup -- it's literally "the plan"
Whether many of us will like that and/or be around for it eventually remains to be seen

Apple today announced the launch of a new app called "Invites," which is designed to allow users to plan events like birthday parties, graduations, vacations, baby showers, and more.

General-Apple-Invites-Feature.jpg

The app supports creating invitations that can be sent out to people. There are options to choose a background image from the Photos app, choose one of Apple's built-in images, or select an emoji background, with font customization available. Apple automatically adds in information from the Maps and Weather apps so that invitees have all of the data they need for an event, such as weather conditions and directions.

Apple designed Invites with Apple Intelligence in mind. When creating an invite, there is an option to take advantage of Image Playground to create original images using text-based descriptions. Writing Tools can also be employed to find the ideal phrasing for an invitation.

People who receive invites can RSVP, and there is a built-in method that allows the sender to track who has responded. When the event happens, there's an option to create a collaborative event soundtrack so everyone can contribute music, and a dedicated shared album lets event goers see photos and videos and contribute their own.

Invites is an iCloud+ service, which means that it is available to iCloud+ subscribers. iCloud+ is priced starting at $0.99 per month, and it provides users with additional iCloud storage over the free 5GB that comes with any device.

While anyone is able to respond to an Invite that's sent out, creating invites is limited to iCloud+ subscribers. Apple Invites is available for all iPhone models that run iOS 18 or later, and the app can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

This is definitely hinting at a visual redesign, look at that VisionOS style interface.

A nice idea for an app! But locked to creating events behind iCloud+? That’s a poor choice that will lead to less users, even though those who can respond to events aren’t required to have iCloud+.

The alternative is to be like Meta and do it in Facebook or WhatsApp in exchange for selling your data.

Hot Take: Apple's marketing voice has always been incredibly cringe. The extent to which Apple leans on mawkish sentimentality or attempting to insert itself into personal memories or activities is creepy both for how empty it rings and yet how successful it is at motivating buyers.

I don't argue that point as frequently as I used to since doing so seems to really upset people, especially around here.

Wow, did not ask for this but actually useful. Tried like 2 existing competitors for this and the price and all was just too much for a simple get together. Will gladly welcome this
