I'd love to see this data that shows that it'll never be "worthwhile". I'll wait.

I would like to see evidence that it will be, considering that you were the one who brought it up in the first place.

For most people, their phone more than suffices as their music player.

Second, Apple Music isn’t profitable. It’s there to lock users into the apple ecosystem. Selling cheap hardware to spur the sales of a loss-making service defeats the whole point.

The A12 has a serious Bug, very-likely in the Performance Controller, & very-likely due to its "fancy" design ... the A10 has NO such fancy design, & NO such Bug ... as such, the A10 can run circles around the A12 in some Extreme Performance applications ! ... long live the A10 !!!

This is coming to you from an EE with a chip background who pivoted into iOS Software Dev ~4.5 years ago.

Few in the General Public know of the Bug, but it could present a very BIG problem for AAPL @ some point ... specifically, their first-ever mass iPhone recall.
Can you elaborate on this bug you’re referring to?

I get the appeal.
Apple devices are pretty, sexy, well-designed etc.

But if you're looking for something cheap for your kid, wouldn't a phone be even better?
I mean you can get a Galaxy A40 for 200 bucks (the price of the ipod)...
The A40 has:
  • 6-inch Super AMOLED display (full HD)
  • Great front and back cameras
  • SD Card slot for more data
  • cpu&ram are pretty modern (8-core cpu, 4gb ram).
Oh and you know, it plays music, video and games... and can make calls!

Why would anyone buy the iPod touch is beyond my understanding.

edit: About the battery: A smartphone on airplane mode basically becomes an iPod touch and will have a huge battery life. I don't know the numbers but it can last for weeks in standby.

Sure those are nice. But if your entire family (and nearly everyone you know) has been using nothing but iPhones for something like 10 years now, why would you get your kid an android? Now you have to teach them how to use it (or worse you have no idea what they are using it for because you don't know how to use it).

Also getting family sharing to work on the iPod is going to be easier for the iOS-centric family.

It’d be interesting to see the revenue generated from devices like this. The only market I see them in is for children. However, most of the children I know use iPads, or some form or tablet, to consume media.

I can’t see the iPod staying around much longer!

The effort to keep the iPod around is so minimal, that it doesn't have to sell in huge numbers to be worth it for Apple. Even a market just for middle-class kids, is still a market that Apple can sell millions a year into.

Certainly enticing - I recently allowed my 7 year old to use my iPhone 5s (data card removed) which I had kept when I upgraded to 8 plus. The battery isn’t the best but for now will suffice

This iPod might be a birthday or Christmas gift!

Exactly. It will certainly work far better than a 5s! And it will run all the same software and iOS as your own, much more up to date, phone.

How are they pretending it's new? Are *you* pretending it's new? No one said the design was new.

The internals are completely new, of course...which, I hope, is alright with you to point out.

The press release is right there, there's no need to make things up that didn't happen to get mad about. Seems to happen with every product release, and it's beyond insane.

They start their press release with "New iPod touch...". They call it "The new iPod touch" numerous times in the same press release.

If you are going to tell me to read the press release, actually read it yourself.

So as I suggested it isn't quite as new as it seems, reusing an old and outdated design. It is the old iPod Touch with a speed bump.

So then why not do this to the SE and just take the gravy generated by the millions of people a year who prefer a small iPhone?

You know that is something of a mystery.

Here are some guesses. Sometimes Apple doesn't release something, even though it will sell, because they don't think folks should buy it. The SE might be in that category. Also, developers of apps having to develop for different phone screen sizes is less than ideal. The SE screen is really much smaller than the X/Xs. Also Apple's biggest bet every year is guessing how many iPhones to order for the coming year. Each model they release/update makes that prediction a little bit harder.

I hope Apple makes another small phone. But I'm guessing when they do it will have FaceID and smaller bezels and the functional screen will be closer to the X/Xs size than the SE is.

But as you say, Apple certainly is losing some overall sales not releasing an updated SE.

Let me explain what is the use of our iPod Touch in my house. It’s literally the control remote of our smart speakers in our house. We have the Apple Music App there and because no one wanted to Use their iPhone because the calls and texting interrupt the music and also they want to watch youtube and browse social networks too the experience is totally awful. That’s why iPod Touch is the main controller for music in our house and worth every penny.

How does that work if you have multiple users with their preferred playlists?

Because they already do have a small iphone in the lineup: the iphone 13 mini. Unless they discontinue the mini model for the iphone 14, as some rumors suggest Apple might, what you suggest doesn’t make much sense. They’d just hurt the sales of the iphone mini.

Gotta love when somebody resurfaces an old thread and then somebody replies to a post that's over 2 years old and the original poster of that post hasn't been on the forum in over a year. ? I always look at the dates of the posts I think about replying to. ?

Well basically that’s our main music system in the house. Everyone can enjoy their music on their devices with headphones. Maybe we are not an ordinary family but we all can enjoy the music is playing if they choose the ipod touch controller. I mean, we can just change our Apple ID if we want to go extreme.

So you have a separate Apple ID for the main music system and create playlists, etc. using that?
