It’s not reusing an old design, it’s a spec bump on the current design.

The design is very outdated now and they have been reusing the same design for years.

The seventh-generation iPod touch has the same design as the sixth-generation model, including a 4-inch Retina display, a home button without Touch ID...........

A modded SSD 256 or even 512 gb iPod Classic on eBay, with a 3000 mAh battery option (900/1000 songs listened on every charge cycle) would be cheaper, at least here in Europe. And in my humble opinion, with a better DAC. If it is only music you’re talking about. Obviously ALAC and not FLAC files

why ALAC not FLAC? both lossless... file size? can be comparable depending upon speed of compression. just wondering.

I don't get the crying regarding this device. It's perfect for anyone(e.g me) who wants a separate device for his media. This is a perfect PMP at a reasonable price. I have plenty local music that I would love to listen on the go (many of them are indie music so they arenot available on either Spotify or Apple Music) without using my main phone's memory. Only grip is that it doesn't support FLAC out of the box, but then you can install VLC, which makes it a minor issue. Heck they could have even gotten rid of the camera and I wouldn't have minded anything.

So what you are saying is that if Apple included more base storage as standard or reduce the price for each storage increase you would only require one device. Which in turn would lead to less environmental damage and CO2 emissions. Apple's Green Contradiction

I'd be surprised if the 6s is not supported for iOS 13. It would mean this phone will have 4 years of update support instead of the minimum of 5. Considering this phone is still performing very well, taking the risk to have bad press is not a good idea when just last year 5S had 6 years of support.

Apple sells the 6S and SE at Costco presently, it may not loosing any iOS support this year.

How else would Apple keep the costs down? This is a niche product with a very specific audience. It’s not worth updating the design and form factor because it’s not going to sell in sufficient quantities to justify the extra costs.

Curious, what was wrong with it that made your experience poor?

I'll spare you the laundry list, but the main reason was because it was extremely slow. Unacceptably slow.
Family member always complaining how hard is it to take care of this kids (3-5 age) but everytime I visit they all have an ipad in their hand......... I guess this is the new generation of parenting

Yes indeed. It's truly pathetic.

Surely Apple recognises every time it does not update iPod, allows iPod, iPad mini, iMac to date, look old in their 5+ year old bezels and cases, what it really does is destroy any perception that Apple is a leader. Apple doesn’t lead. This new iPod should have adopted the new full screen design. Very poor, Apple. Who “runs” Apple?

Why bother to sell it if it is a loss product to Apple, it would make more sense to lower the price on the SE/iPhone 6S that is more capable or even the 7.

Why not carry the iPod shuffle, iPod Nano while we are at it, not going to sel in numbers but hey whatever

SE 2019 = Satellite Edition ;):p

So you are insinuating that I am not an actual parent? Get a grip. I didn't have a phone until my 20's and I was fine. But this is 2019 and times are different. I am a single father raising 3 boys, and have a full time career. I cant be everywhere with everyone. Technology is wonderful if you know how to use it.
I was simply making a distinction between being a parent and parenting. You're telling me to get a grip? Seems like I struck a nerve. I'm going to let you go heal now.

I was just thinking to myself "where's the market for this" until I saw your comment.
I don't have CD players anymore.. I have all my music on my iPod, I wouldn't be able to keep everything on my iPhone.. so yeah there is still a market for it

Not hating on the parade, but why not buy a iPhone 7 refurb on eBay for $170-$190 with a bigger screen and TouchID. LOL! You can always use it as an iPod first and phone second.

This is good to have as an option but considering you can buy new SEs for about $100 or a new iPhone 7 for about $200, there are better options.
Agreed!

I believe there is still a market for a small iPhone form factor that isn’t a phone. Perhaps for younger children of parents who aren’t ready to let them own a smartphone yet?

Not very big, but still profitable enough to support (barely).

Then there was this interesting article I chanced across yesterday,

Also read somewhere that when some us politician’s house was raided, police found 7 iPod touches in his house, which he had been using to communicate with other people via the signal app. But alas, I forgot to save it.

Interesting indeed, however playing devils advocate one could simple use signal app with a vpn on a phone as it uses data. I believe even on wifi a device id is recorded, the issue is it makes is a little challenging as one could be bouncing from one wifi network to another, that being said the same can be accomplished with a mobile phone with airplane mode activated and using just wifi with signal.

Phone calls and SMS records can be obtained by the parties you mentioned, however using other forms of encrypted communications, well that is another story.

Just checked the price of the 2019 iPod Touch on Apples Canada site and Costco Canada for an iPhone SE, both devices are 128GB and the difference between the iPod Touch and SE is $30 Canadian Dollars. Plus you get a whole lot more with the exception of A9 versus A10. If this is meant for a child I would get them the SE and use it as an iPod Touch.

Well, I guess my counter to that is that these may not be tech savvy people we are talking about. It’s an extra step to toggle VPN on and off every time you want to chat privately with another party. $200 seems like a small price for a dedicated signal device that you don’t have to micromanage as much.

On a different note, the iPod touch images seem to suggest that Apple is promoting it as a cheap device for AR, FaceTime and gaming. I suspect we will see more support for it during WWDC. It would work well with Apple Arcade.

Enterprise seems another use case. I think I saw people at Uniqlo using iPod touches to check on how much stock they carry.

I don’t think this move is as random as some people are making it out to be.

I concur with your tech savvy comment, I see it all too often :) VPN depending on the provider and app has an auto-connect and kill switch, so no management to worry about, it is fool proof :p

What happens if the dedicated signal device is lost, most people dislike entering passwords as it is another thing to remember, it would defeat the purpose of signal at that point. Hypothetically speaking.

POS and enterprises using them, seems interesting, why not an iPad instead maybe size dunno. Hard to loose an iPad on the other hand an iPod, hmm.

Well the move is good news as it means the A10 chip will be supported for a very long time :D

At present AppleTV 4K has an A10, iPod touch 2019 has an A10, 2017 iPad Pro has an A10X, iPad mini and iPad Air 2019 has an A12, Apples choice of silicone is a mess.

Personal preference for power, portability and value is the iPad mini 2019 that has 3GB RAM and an A12.

Passcodes are easy to figure out.

But to my original point, the presence of Touch ID does not change that. Touch ID won't lock a parent out of being able to use the passcode. Neither does FaceID.

Exactly. Easy or not, a parent is always able to use the passcode. There is no way to disable the passcode and use only a biometric identifier to unlock a phone. Not in any mobile device platform.
