Apple Launches OS X Lion Via Mac App Store

Same here. I bought an iMac on July 6, 2011 from the Apple Store online and the online up-to-date form is telling me it doesn't recognize the serial number :-/

I should addend that I have *four* machines (work) that are invalid. I wonder if it has anything to do with the macbook pros being build to order....

Just to be sure I understood correctly.

Is it true that in order to install Lion you MUST have Snow Leopard?

If it is, can Leopard users install Lion without installing and updating Snow Leopard?

If they can, would it be enough to provide them with a bootable Lion DVD?

Regards

For anyone that's on the fence, I threw together 2500 words on Lion last night. Feel free to check it out or just ignore this post, either way. :)

It's a nice and friendly article that you wrote there. And you're right, it won't be long until we know whether there will be a 10.8 or something else. I guess next year's WWDC will already shed a light on that.

My opinion: There's a reason why they called 10.7 "Lion". It's the king of beasts, there can't be anything after it. The next Apple OS, under a new family name, will merge iOS and OS X. And it will only allow the installation of software from the Apple AppStore, of course. The first announcement will be on next year's WWDC, the release in the summer of 2013. And I hope that I'm wrong about iOS and OS X being merged and about the AppStore being the only way to install software on that platform, but Apple's next moves have been very predictable lately.

I just received a new MBPro last week, do they usually let you upgrade for free?
I want to say in the past they have done that.
:apple:

After 45 minutes on the phone with tech support, they confirmed the issue and said it's a problem with their backend servers, blah, blah, blah. Said they are entering serial numbers and that the issue would be resolved in 24 hours. Said they won't reimburse me if I purchase from the App Store.

Apparently the installer file in Application Support/AppStore is deleted the instant the download is complete, as the installer automatically opens.

So it looks like the method that Macrumors described to copy the installer to other machines and save yourself multiple 4GB downloads doesn't work.

Has anybody had any luck with other methods?

Trying to install Lion, I got this message:

This disk doesn't use the GUID partition scheme.Use Disk Utility to change the partition scheme. But when I go to Disk Utility, I can't change the partition scheme.

Anyone else encountering this?

Nope. But you have a big job ahead of you!

But how can i Customize the install (no printer drivers, etc..)??
The "Customize" button is Greyed out.

Someone earlier had mentioned the possibility of OS updates coming over the App Store, instead of through Software Update.

Users of the GM (myself included) would obviously be in the queue for updates pushed through Software Update, but if they come through the Mac App Store, I don't know if we'd get them or not.

If this was the case then all new hardware with Lion preinstalled wouldn't be able to update within Lion ;-)

Question: If you're in the free Lion window (bought my iMac ~2 weeks ago), how do you download it without paying for it?

Also, can I download it without installing it, just yet?

In short, you need to provide proof of purchase via e-mail and will get a redemption code for a free copy of Lion specifically for that computer (not for use on other computers).

And yes, you can download Lion without installing it. I've just done it. "Install Mac OS X Lion" will launch automatically once downloaded, but you have to click a Continue button to proceed with installation. You can Quit instead, and keep the installer for later.

Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you liked it.

You're definitely right about it being called "Lion". As Siracusa pointed out, where do we go beyond the king of the jungle? It definitely does feel like OS X is getting to a crossroads.

I really hope you're wrong and that OS X won't turn into the locked down system you're describing. I think Apple would be foolish to do something as bold (and controlling) as that. They should leave well enough alone, in that regard.

I think Snow Leopard is a little sad today guys. Go easy on him.

took me 40 min in Tokyo on a 100Mb/s dedicated line ... clearly the other side was too busy ... now try to upgrade my MacMini for testing before upgrading MBA and iMac ...

How many installations do I get?

I have three computers, can I upgrade to Lion on all three with just one purchase? How? One of my computers uses a different apple ID for purchases.
