Update on our problems

Update:

Our IT department patched something on the servers. This has fixed the severe problems they were seeing.

Lion is still not able to login to our network. Our network servers run a mix of Windows and Solaris on Dell and Sun hardware. Our IT department is working with Apple tech support to try and resolve this.

I don't know what went wrong or why logins don't work. I'm not in IT and don't have any details.

Even though I like Apple, this is a nice alternative review...

His first point was only posted on every review days earlier and they often included the bit about simply removing a check mark in the option that enabled the reverse scrolling. I did that and disabled auto open the last used doc in each app option almost immediately with no fuss.

I use MS Word for a simple weekly progress report for work each week. I have no problems with it on Lion. Articles like that serve little purpose if details aren't provided. What kind of problems is the fellow having? What version of Office/Word? Oh wait - he doesn't even use Word. I'm on 2011.

I don't uses spaces enough to comment on his third gripe.

As for Lion being forced to be like iOS - I just don't see it. Yeah, there are some visual things taken from iOS, but Lion is still Mac OS to me. It still works like the previous versions (at least after disabling "use natural scrolling" in system prefs).

I've only been a Mac user since 2006, but I don't see drastic changes in the UI between any version from Tiger to Lion beyond the ones already commented on.

I would be annoyed if the options weren't there to disable these things. I would hate to use "natural scrolling" on Mac OS since I also use Windows and Linux which doesn't do that. But for now at least, Apple is giving me the choice.

Then you have a BAD IT department! A good IT department would have a test machine to test before updating any workstation/server!

Very scary, I'm surprised the "anti-Apple" press isn't making front page news of this problem.
It is not the first news I have seen posted about getting multiple (or even incorrect) charges for a Lion purchase. The last over charge I saw was 3/4 copies from "one" purchase. Otherwise paying ~US$1 for Lion and not getting charged more might happen as well.

First impressions

After passing one week working and playing with my Lion I can give you a few impressions.
First of all I find Lion greedy of RAM. I run it on my MacBook Pro 13" and I had to upgrade it to 8Gb.
Second I find launch pad too rigid. At the moment I can't get rid of plenty of uninstallers and minor apps.
I have some problems with a dmg image disk protected with a password where I store all my accounts and delicate informations. When I try to open it my system freezes over. After restarting my system it opens fine. I got rid of it but I don't have clues about the problem.
Some times when I wake my mac from sleep it can't access the network and airport seems to hung with exclamation mark on it.
In iStat (a performance monitor in dashboard) I noticed that a mysterious MobileBackups drive appeared. It is marked 499.2 Gb used and 0 free space. I can't figure out what is it all about.
Backups with my time capsule it is slower than before and after backing up it doesn't eject the external drive. I always have to eject it manually all the times.
I store several movies on an external HD. Since I upgraded to Lion it takes ages to display preview instead of a blank squared edge (not even the icon!).
Quick Time takes ages to load the videos as well.
I seldom run windows xp with Parallels and despite the extremely low CPU usage (I have i7 2,7 GHz quad core), the exhaust fan get to spin faster and faster very quickly.
Log in screen is extremely low in responding. Some time I can't figure if it got my click on my user or not. There is a delay when I write my password and it takes much longer than before to get me to the user interface.
Regarding the finder side bar (or side column on the left) I would like to have is in color icons like those you find in finder preference. I also would like status bar to how a file (or folder) size other than the drive remaining size.

Since the update to Lion on my MBP my camera will not work on any
chat sites, what gives is it Flash thats the problem, my iMac works fine since I have not updated that machine.

it worked. if you can't redownload the lion again. try to signout from your apple id in the app store then try again the steps given. launch app store > hold option button then go to purchases. should work. :)

I can imagine how many downloads their were, you know there's gonna be some problems.

update

How long does it take to have the free update approved, i requested last week and still dont have any response...

Aaaargh.

How long is it going to take them to issue an update to fix Mission Control? Doesn't show fullscreen apps, doesn't show other spaces, doesn't show minimized apps, it stacks everything in a heap, won't let ya switch spaces in a loop, and whatever spaces there are bounce all over at random.

I could overlook the fact that it boots 3x slower, sucks up all my ram, and makes a limited, redundant mess out of gestures, but I can't get any work done if I can't see %#^*!

Perhaps a downgrade is in order after all. Damn!

This is why I prefer a clean install versus an upgrade. You can disable the spaces moving around in Mission Control preferences. It's supposed to auto arrange by most used. Also, when updating from SL to Lion, the SL gestures still worked in Lion.

Still no Lion for me. A lot of devs for stuff I frequently use aren't officially supporting Lion, these dudes need to hurry up. Maybe I'll move on and just install Snow Leopard in VMware. I don't even know if I can do that. ;)

To Upgrade from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Not with Lion OS X

Hello

I am a user of MacBook - 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Due, 2 GB Ram, NVIDA GeForce 9400M running Snow Leopard. I am pretty happy with the performance of the existing system, and more excited to get the Lion OS X, but a bit confused.

If i go for the Lion OS X will the throughput of my existing system come down, as it has been bothering me from the day Lion OS X came into existences.

I am also getting my system upgrade with 4 GB of Ram and also getting a TrackPad soon for exploiting the gesture to its maximum.

But as said earlier in-spite of doing all the upgrading and getting the system ready for Lion OS takeover, am worried that performance of my system might slow-down.

Can anyone of you clear my doubt regarding this

regards - JMohan

I have updated 4 Macs to Lion (15" MB Pro (2010), 13" MB Pro (2010) and two 27" iMacs (2010 and 2011) so far.

In general, the UI "improvements" are incidental at best, IMO. The "natural" scroll is counter-intuitive and the first thing to disable, the Launchpad and Mission Control are "bleh." The new touch stuff is also "bleh."

Some old apps, like QX4 don't work anymore.

I hate it that Switchies For Mail doesn't work.

AFP connectivity is broken to most servers, although there is a way to resurrect it through the Terminal.

I am noticing considerably more lag, with the beach-ball spinning noticeably more often than before. I am getting more "not-responding" instances as well, from both Firefox and Chrome, as well as ID and PS and Office 2011. Mail seems particularly laggy, too.

In general..

Yep. Our MBP's with it run fans constantly now. Not sure what they spent a whole year making lion do that snow leopard didn't, but so far all the changes I've seen have been negatives.

I can only imagine the internal dialogue that is happening at Apple right now.

just noticed... you can only have one mail message open at a time, & when you do, you can't work in the rest of the mail program. Like they're phasing out multitasking...

The only possible saving grace to this is iCloud. If it works, I'll put up with Lion.

For doing a pretty slick job on some of the details, Apple has a long way to go in improving the OS X & iOS experiences.

All lights are green here.

No problems here (knock on wood). Updates on a MacBook (2009), MacBook Pro (2007), two Mac minis (2009, 2010) from SL to Lion.

Typically, I like clean installs. However, this being a new beast (no pun intended :p), I thought I'd see if Apple really pulled it off. Besides making sure all software we use had been updated to support Lion, all available updates from Apple installed, and Disk Utility showed everything was copacetic prior to install, we didn't really do much else in our firm.

So far, users seem for the most part pleasantly surprised with some of the new features. However, there have been a few complaints here and there that things were missing or gone; typically, it turned out that Lion provided an easier method, just not immediately apparent. I left it to people to ultimately decide if they want the new scroll direction or the old but asked that they give the new way a try for a few days before reverting to the old. As some have reported on the Internet, we, too, noticed Safari and overall performance slow on the first day after install but finally being much peppier than even Snow Leopard by the second or third day at the latest.

If things go well over the next two weeks, I'll deploy it to the rest of our machines. To those having any serious issues, good luck and I hope they are resolved soon.

OS X Lion SUCKS with a capital S!

This operating system is my worst nightmare.

The first thing I noticed is that my macbook pro started crashing 1-2 times a day. I didn't know why. Now I know it's because of Lion.

Then I found out from Apple that when I downloaded Lion all of my time machine backups became invalid! I could get to the data, but only manually. And this was a scream, the "senior advisor" suggested I try to find a missing contact in address book from a list of over 3300 contacts with encrypted names. In other words, he suggested I look through each and every one until I find it! When I stopped screaming at him we went on to the next issue. Now I have had to manually delete multiple time machine backups so time machine doesn't think my external hd's are full! Since it doesn't recognize the backups it is trying to delete newer backups.

Address book is horrible! Besides that it has the same tacky look as the one in iPad, it can't go to 3 panes, just 2 at a time. Thanks Apple again for making our life's more difficult.

The scroll bar disappears and is hard to get to at times.

They made the scroll direction opposite from the direction it was before. You have to change it or it makes you crazy!

My version of parallels doesn't work at all! It won't even start up with this new OS, so I can't access parts of my system.

Trust me there's more and I'm finding out more wonderful surprises about this POS OS every single day. I was on 3 support calls with Apple in less then 24 hours yesterday!

Oh and the original OS issue had me basically down for 2 days! I was working with one of Apple's SE's and my cell phone dropped. He decided to go home for the day as opposed to calling me back. This was after having my system all disconfigured, so I couldn't use it.

I don't really care about all of the new bells and whistles, the bottom line is that this new OS is a complete and total piece of crap! Did they have to freakin change everything about a wonderful OS like Snow Leopard? I'd go back to it, but then my data would be even more compromised and at some point I'll have to install it anyway.

Again, thanks Apple! Would Steve Jobs please come back and get this company back on it's feet? The stock may be up, but this company is starting to really suck!
