Does your company do time machine backups? Time machine will do a full backup after the Lion install , if you had several of them at once it could generate a significant load.

Generally not. There are department Retrospect servers that back up most desktop machines, including the Macs. I'm sure a few people have set up time machine but it isn't the norm. In any case, wouldn't time machine limit itself to a single subnet? We have a class B network with many subnets and over 10,000 computers.

just realized this...

Lion announced October 20th.
Lion realeased July 20th.
Nine EXACT months of waiting paid off.:)

finished :)

Loving the new scrolling as well as full screen apps. I have also noticed a few UI changes such as the buttons are squarer (if thats a word) than they were to my knowledge in Snow Leopard. I think Apple did a really good job with this release. Definitely looking forward to finding more tweaks that I haven't found yet.

I've got a couple of doubt about downloading lion from the appstore and it would be great if some one could help me out.

1. I have a slow connection of 300kbps. Is it possible to download Lion part by part or will it restart the download if the connection breaks?

2. If i close the lid and the mbp goes to sleep will the download continue?

Thanks in advance!

I'm downloading mine now (NO it's not one of THOSE posts, lol)
I would suggest you go to an Apple Store with your mbp and see if they would sell to you and let you use their connection there. I thought I read that people that had trouble with the download could do that.
Me, when I go to the Apple Store for a favor, I take something I baked (retired chef), like a pan of my sticky buns or pecan rolls - I get there early while the store isn't officially open and to my business. The Apple Store people are remarkably kind. So if you don't bake take a box of Dunkin' Donuts and if they refuse you go home eating the donuts to soothe your hurt feelings.
Your connection is so slow I would fear you would LOSE it before the download got half way done. I'm lucky I waited 2 days after the release and my download is zipping alone on my Optimum high speed cable connection.

'
Good luck, I'm excited to start playing with this.

You always could wait until August when they will be releasing the thumb drive version (but for $70.00), then you would have a backup copy if disaster struck.

At least my version of Lion does have that option under mouse settings.

:scratches head: After a couple re-boots, that option suddenly appeared. I swear...I'm not crazy! That option was not there initially

 Odd things do happen. I think that's what Steve calls magic. :D Good thing it works now and you can switch buttons, would be quite an error from Apple to leave out that option.

My download/install took a little over an hour - I have an older 24 inch iMac Core 2 Duo. Everything I had set seemed to come up like I'm used to it being, the only thing I gotta get used to is the reverse scrolling and no bar on the side (more like when you scroll with an iPhone, the little indicator appears suddenly while scrolling). Cool, I said I wanted it to be more iOS like and now I gotta go get used to getting my wish. LOL

Cool...

I feel you brother! I'm getting the same speed here. It fluctuates between 900 and 1100 Kbps.

You can close the lid, but the download will pause. Just make sure it doesn't die on your the download progress may be lost. Don't log off or shut down the computer neither. If the connection breaks it will just pause and remain where it's at. I think you'd have to resume it manually though, so don't stray far from the computer if you have an untrustworthy connection.

Why do you write always in bold?

Fair question, it gets asked in a lot of places.

I am 64 and have advanced glaucoma,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glaucoma

I'm almost completely blind in my left eye and have very restricted vision in my right eye. Most people aren't even aware of it, they say "Oh you seem normal" but then I bump into something or don't see something on the floor as I'm walking...

Using bold sure make it easier for me to proof read my entries, I like posting things spelled as best as I can.

Now if I can just get used to the reverse scrolling and watch some demo of how to make Launchpad and Mission Control work I might use those features.

Ok, I understand.

I was reading on Engadget, and there's sooooo many haters/MSFT fanboys going on about how stupid we are paying $29 for a "service pack". And then they say they're not impressed with Lion's 1M day one DLs because Windows 7 has like 400M sold. And also how Windows has NEVER released a buggy OS.

lol...............Well Lion works for me and today I'll be picking up a trackpad because gesture control on the magic mouse is tacky at best.

I'm getting a third of your speed. My download will finish in 1 day and 1 hour, I've downloaded around 700mb during the past 8 hours.

Shutting down or logging of doesn't seem to be a problem (i tried it) provided you pause the download first. If the connection breaks just get the connection back and retry the download - it will continue from where it stopped. I went through this too.

@bigmikeinnj Thanks for the info but there aren't any Apple stores in my state or any of the neighboring ones. So i'm stuck chugging along on my 300kBps connection getting like 30kilbytes/sec. By the time this is over I'll have a halo around my head.

Reminds me of downloading Java development kit around '96. It was a huge, huge, huge package. I believe it was over 20 megabytes with everything included. And I had a 2400 baud dial-up modem, which transferred something like 200 bytes per second. :D Took over 24 hours. Now I could transfer it in under 20 seconds.

Patience. I think Lion is worth it. :apple:

At my university, if you use more than 1.5 GB in 24 hours, they throttle you to modem speeds

Weirdo Issues with App Store an Lion Install an paid only $1 for it????

I recently purchased 10.7 via App Store, as it already had all my details that was fine. Had money in my Visa Debit Account an to my amazement, instead of being charged $38.99 which is the cost of the OS in my country, I was charged a $1…???? Rang the Bank to check about the payment and they said nope Apple had only debited $1 from my account and it has now been 3days, and I know of other users that have already had there funds withdrawn…

My iMac does not qualify for the free upgrade as it's a Mid June 2010 21.5, but in the APP store it says on the Lion Logo Installed, an under purchases it confirms it has been purchased.

Now I must say that the download took about 1hr there a bouts, however talk about issues from word go, had all sorts of issues going on. After calling Applecare they guided me through, and low an be hold all the permissions were screwed up, the verify disk failed an had to externally repair that, then the Mail program decided it would do some really weird stuff an lock up, which was sorted via deleting the old plists, then hassles with the IR remote…

Somehow I think Apple could of beta tested the OS a lot better, as to have that many issues is rather a bad look, and as Applecare said there will be an update very soon to fix all the issues

Lucky you, at my college we're stuck at 100kbps speeds the whole day! Using gprs with edge turns out faster.

The system initially checks if the account is valid by charging a small amount before proceeding to give you what you bought - that's probably the one dollar you're seeing. In my case they haven't charged me anything yet. In fact i was just trying to see if i had netbanking - don't believe i do since paypal rejects transfers from my card. Like to see how apple plays this out.

I understand that there are some changes where people would complain about, but how does Microsoft Word not working Apple's fault?

Tell Microsoft to update their Applications. Lion isn't something thats released overnight, there's plenty of advance warning to tell developers to update the apps that you develop.

Backwards compatibility is something Windows users are used to. It is kinda hard to wrap your mind around something losing compatibility so "quickly".
