A top case replacement is usually pretty quick. And it will come back with a shiny new keyboard, trackpad, Al topcase (where your hands rest), and battery.

That will be nice! Yes, when there was the situation with delamination on screens, I had that issue with my 2015 13" MBP and I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly the screen was replaced and the computer back in my hands again. I expect that the battery replacement on this machine will be pretty speedy as well, or at least I hope so.

There seems to be a recall program for every Apple product made in the recent years...
Not sure if good support or bad quality manufacturing.

I was going to have a small heart attack when I thought my MBP was affected... There is no Apple store around me, I am not willing to part with my MBP for 2 weeks+, I don't trust handing my MBP with all my data on it to some stranger tech. expert, and I don't want to buy a new flimsy touchbar butterfly keyboard mac let alone can't afford it.

so 2015 product gets recall 4 years later? How does that work?

It’s not really a ‘recall’. That’s a bad choice of terms to use. It’s a ‘service program’. Basically Apple keeps track of how many repairs happen on each component for each reason in their stuff. If they find that there’s been a high amount of repairs on the same component for similar reasons they will often issue this kind of program. It helps them to avoid lawsuits etc. they already do free repairs on swollen batteries in computers for 2-3 years after purchase. But because batteries are a potential safety risk if they are being extra cautious. And they are using the term ‘recall’ because of the fearful associations so that hopefully folks will come in right off and get the replacement thus helping them avoid lawsuits if a ****** battery is punctured by a user etc

Literally just bought one in mint condition on ebay for $800 yesterday and saw this today lol.

Evidently it's my lucky day! I ran the serial and it's not part of the recall.

You should have backups of your data already and you can always erase the computer. They don’t need your data for this repair.

Will this MacBook will be banned from flights like the Galaxy Note 7? These battery devices are getting more dangerous.

Macrumors members:

What Samsung Note's with battery overheating issues? Put this company out of business now! How could they let this happen!?!

Apple laptop batteries overheating. Best designed laptop ever thanks for the free battery upgrade!

;)

When they replace the battery, they generally replace the entire top case, since the battery is glued in. New keyboard, new trackpad... very cool.

My work laptop had a battery swell (late 2013.)

They replaced the top case but they really jacked the the original case pieces up with whatever jig they use. There are these small but deep pin/needle marks in the bottom case and they jacked up the plastic U channel over the hinge (white stress marks.)

I've seen this on several MacBook Pros that have had the batteries replaced by Apple.

Still the pinnacle of Apple's laptop design. I almost wish my late-2013 was affected haha I could use a new battery...

I disagree, but that's okay. :)

I think the 2011/2012 machines are arguably superior, in particular the 17", because it had the best combo of power, upgradeability, and expandability (the Expresscard slot is great). The 2012 15" lost the expresscard slot but added USB 3, though.

Once the Retinas came out Apple started soldering (well, it was the Air, but still)....

At the Apple Store right now to drop mine off. Perfect timing since i’m Going on vacation next week...I figure it’ll take 1-2 weeks so i’ll be back when it’s ready

Not to be hypercritical, but it seems like Apple has no shortage of recalls and service programs of late.

I had one of the MBP's effected by the "stagelighting" defect. I took it in 1 month after the warranty was up, and was told I would have to pay to have it fixed. I was beyond livid. But, I needed my computer. My wife said I looked like I was about to have a heart attack my face was so red keeping my calm with the guy. So, I signed the work order that was type coded as a "cracked screen" as the tech told me it wouldn't make any difference anyway, they would replace the screen either way and it would run me close to five bills.

Fast forward to last month, when Apple approved a voluntary recall for these machines, and offered payment for out of pocket repairs. Since the tech encoded it as a "cracked screen" (there was NO damage to the screen, and with the occasional excursion to the desk in my office, it was a desk queen) there really was no way this unit incurred any physical damage.

Apple refused to reimburse me for the repair, stating I had damaged the screen, and that the tech had documented it in the work order. I'm fighting them through AMEX right now.

I still like Apple products. I have all the latest stuff right down to the Apple Watch 4, and a current iPad Pro. I used to LOVE Apple stuff. I loved that I knew I was getting top quality for a few extra bucks. I knew I was getting superior customer service, and would be given the benefit of the doubt in my dealings with them. I felt as though I was buying something that would last, and that the extra money was worth it.

Not anymore. I steered a lot of people in the direction of the Apple/Mac/iPhone. Including my wife who was a Samsung fan before we got hitched. This is the 3rd time in a single year Apple has left me with a bad taste in my mouth. At this point, I don't necessarily see the value of Apple products matching the price point. Particularly for laptops and tablets. The phones are a "wait and see" proposal for me, as I have an Xr and have it all kitted up with a battery case, screen saver, etc. My wife is due for a new phone, and I think I will encourage her to give the Galaxy 10 a look, and get whichever one she likes better. She really doesn't benefit from the Apple "ecosystem" as she doesn't use Pay, iTunes, Music, or any of the other Apple content products. She doesn't have a wearable, but given the stand alone route the Watch is going, an iPhone probably makes less and less sense for her should she chose to acquire one. The Apple Watch is still the best wearable on the market hands down.

And the thing is, I WANT to love Apple's products, and the company as a whole. I want to be able to go somewhere I know I'm paying a bit more, but getting the whole package out the door, working, and with the best quality. I just don't and can't any more. Which is, kinda sad.....

I think Apple should launch a new quality control/customer service initiative to try and get ahead of these issues. Apple is presently between Stage 1 and Stage 3 of the "Five Stages of Decline" of a business.

Without drastic fixes, I don't see it ending very well....

Mine is a late 2015 that I bought in 2016. Just checked and it is eligible. I am already in the process of doing the mail in recall. Ever since we got the iPad Pro's I barely use my laptop and would be fine without for a couple weeks. I think it is great that they are doing this.

That's fair. I'd say the Retina models are probably the best balance of new and old. That said, I might've even been happier if they had kept the same chassis as the 2011 and just added a Retina Display and newer internals. I want my Ethernet port.

Mine also isn't eligible, despite never having had the battery serviced until now. So are we looking at a particular bad run of batteries that they've identified and linked to computers with certain serial numbers? The wide range of dates makes it sound like a blanket recall.
