Jony Ive, though he created some really cool designs, has a history of consumer products littered with flaws that developed once his 'art' was used in the real world. Going back to the G4 cube, which developed cracks in its polycarbonate shell soon after its release.

Before that, the white iBooks developed cracks around the edges of the laptop.

Fast forward to the 'innovative' design of the butterfly keyboard (which turned out to be horribly flawed) and several problems in between.

I've said it before, but to me, a great designer makes stuff that not only looks cool, but also holds up in the world against wear, tear, weather, and human use. Jony Ive's designs too often failed the second part of that equation.

Dude get a grip. You are acting like he designed nothing but crap for the past 20 years. I think there were a few great products sprinkled in there. Every great designed has big hits and big misses. Jony has had both, and the majority of Apple's products were better because he was in charge of their design.

Yeah, I don’t think people give Jony Ive enough credit for the talent that he has had over the years with his design elements. Not everybody will agree with his design cues for the iPhone,/Apple Watch, etc. But he has a really unique mind that most probably couldn’t put in the effort/time that he has to make the design aesthetically pleasing to the consumer. I mean, Apple has sold millions of products over the years, not just based on the hardware quality, but because the design cues really are unique to Apple.

I had a stainless steel series one watch that the adhesive wore off and the screen came detached from the case. Normal wear, i wasn't misusing it at all. One day I was walking and all of a sudden I heard a clanking noise, lokked down and my screen was hanging down. Contacted Apple to see what they could do, becuase of course my applecare had just expired, and they said nope it will be $299 for a replacement. I said I don’t even want you to replace it I just want you to repair the adhesive on the one I have now. It will still be $299....so for your apparent design fault I have to pay that much money when I can go get a series 4 watch instead? I was hot, especially since I have purchased quite a bit of Apple products through the years, you think they would at least repair the thing for $50 bucks or less if I made the trip to an Apple store.

This happened to me a month ago with my series 2 42mm aluminum Apple Watch. I took it to the Apple store and they tried to sell me a new watch, which I thought was off putting and strange. They said there was nothing they could do since it was out of its Apple care warranty. To fix it they said it would be $279 and a new series 3 was less than that so they recommended a new one. I didn't bite. I called Apple support with the issue because when it happened it literally burned my wrist and was flashing a green pixelated screen along with the crack around the edge. The Apple support person told me to go back to the store and they'll have it shipped to take a look at it. Went to the store again and actually had the same Apple crew member look at my watch again along with the notes from the support team and magically they were able to send it in for diagnostics for free. About a week later I got an email saying my new Apple Watch was being shipped out free of charge. Interesting how that worked out. I don't know if I'll buy another Apple Watch if they knowingly sell watches with this issue. May keep an eye out if the same issue happens with the series 4 or 5...

"very rare circumstances" lol I worked at a London flagship and we saw this all the time
Yeah, I saw many as well. No mention of reimbursing people that paid hundreds for replacements.

more often that happens when the battery swells and pushes the display from the case. I’d try to service it as a swollen battery. Should be covered out of warranty.

Let’s be serious....your data is anecdotal.

You're right - I'd much rather see the actual data about the number of issues.
To eliminate this speculation, all Apple has to do is publish numbers (estimated units or approximate %) about the reported problem.

[Of course, there is no way to aggregate all the information about devices which are repaired by unauthorized shops or devices that are unrepaired/recycles/discarded]

Hm anyone know if this type of crack would be covered? I honestly don’t ever remember doing anything to crack it! If it is then I can sell it before I get an series 5 in a few weeks!

... and yet Apple refuses to accept that "Loop Disease" exists on iPhone 7's. If you are the owner of new iPhone 7 you'll be fine for a couple years. But really, why did you spend $800 for a phone that lasts for a measly two years? I will no longer be a fan of Apple. From here on out I will only spread vitriol about Apple.

No way!

I’ve had the exact same problem 9 months ago, contacted Apple, they said they won’t replace and I’ve sold broken AW for nickels, to be disassembled for parts!

And now they say they replace them

My wife had this happen about a year ago. The Apple Store guys told her “there was nothing we can do” and sold her a new watch. They also cleverly kept the old one, so it’s not like she could go back and have them take care of this now.

I was kind of pissed at the time because she wouldn’t push them... I thought it looked like a flaw in the watch. And now we see that it was...

Similar story! I can feel your frustration

This is crazy my girlfriend wears my old Series 2 and it just got a crack like the first image a couple days ago. Will update if they actually do a free repair on it!
Same for mine ...
I have booked an appointment at Apple Store

Out of curiosity, is there any Apple product which doesn't sooner or later require some type of replacement program?
It's becoming a joke.

Lol. Does Apple have a product which is not subject to some sort of a recall "under rare circumstances"?

Is Apple reimbursing people if they paid out of pocket? I had this exact same issue about two months ago and had to use Apple Care Plus to cover it. The entire screen cracked all the way around and fell off.

Yikes , recently got the Series 3 but I got a screen protector put on it the same day so I may not know if the crack forms.

Anyone with a screen protector on their Series 3 that has seen the crack???

I'll be "That Guy" .... "Sapphire Glass", stop it! It's sapphire crystal, or it's glass. The two are different materials.

Who cares? I compare Apple to Apple. I don’t compare them to Samsung.
Everyone? Both sides? I'm just saying when the Note 7 was doing it's thing - it wasn't all Note 7 - just a very small number. It was indeed a "very rare" occurrence among the actual number of Note 7. This isn't disputed. Millions of Note 7 were produced and indeed truly and legitimately only an extremely small number of them experienced battery overheating (short circuiting) that caused them to explode.

So compare "apple to apple" or whatever you need - but let's recognize that when the press release says "a minor number", "very rare", or "extremely small" it entirely true. But, IED's are an entirely different thing from cracked glass - and was why the Note 7 was discontinued.

You mean that when a Watch broke, this failure mode was one of the most frequent ones? Which indicates a design weakness but not how frequently that weakness manifested itself.

Wow. Things keep getting better and better for consumers. I like that. Thanks Apple.

I love the poor attempt to downplay it ‘under vary rare circumstances’...
A really poor attempt of damage control that, if it was really they rare you wouldn’t launch a repair programme for the fault!!

Luckily my Series 1 is still fine :) It is cool you can get it repaired now too, although with Apple that probably means a refurbished replacement.

Why on earth did she let them keep ‘her’ watch? Did they discount the new watch they sold her for keeping the old one? If not then she literally gave Apple her old watch for no reason and they would have refurbished it and resold it..

Actually it’s Sapphire glass because it’s Apples own cheaper mass produced version, and it is not as good or scratch resistant as a Swiss watches sapphire crystal screen.

I have to acknowledge Apple for all their extended repair programs. This wasn't the case a couple of years ago.

Of course it's not funny when your watch goes, or your keyboad sucks, but at least the extended warranties makes it better. :)
