great on a laptop though ? not really.

Who is willing to have their data locally on a laptop and not intelligent enough to purchase a suitable computer or storage device? What else do you want?

You are given the option to move your photos into the cloud in the first place. The devices don’t come with your data preinstalled. Managing that is your responsibility.

lets break it down. I don't want my data (original full size photos) on the laptop It's getting to the point where I have almost no space left to actually store any more photos. I Want it on a usb drive or a network share, multiple copies. Ideally maybe you know, Apples 'backup solution' Time Machine. But it is not possible to do this in any reasonable way when your computer is a laptop. (for clarity, READ: portable device that doesn't have expandable storage, or can have permanently attached external storage)

Please, if I have missed something and it actually IS possible, please let me know! I would love to solve this issue. Tell me the way! As I Detailed in my post above, storing my photos library on a USB drive is not a reasonable or acceptable method as this means my laptop will need to have the drive permanently attached to access my photos, or I have to manage 2 sets of photo libraries with all the sync issues that involves never mind apple literally saying that 'doing this may cause data loss'

So whats your idea?

"You can use iCloud Photos, Shared Albums, and My Photo Stream only with the System Photo Library."

"To prevent data loss, Apple doesn't recommend storing photo libraries on external storage devices like SD cards and USB flash drives, or drives that are shared on a network."

Sorry, You expect apple to build you a solution for that specific use case? Can’t you just use, say, light room and have catalogues elsewhere?

Not my problem if what is offered here doesn’t suit you.

Get the software and hardware to do the job, as you’re so clearly able to outline what your need is. Just don’t expect the onboard tools to cater for every niche.

I find your daily complaint rant lacking innovation too.
Yeah - thats true - but hard to conTür 0 innovation with innovative rants - i would prefer to rant about all the innovation in mostly positive posts - but its just not there.

most of the crazy funny typos are coming from my innovative iPad - as an artist i enjoy it.

Wow. Nice troll

That’s my thoughts exactly. Luckily you have all the solutions to your rant now and we can maybe comment on the article topic rather than make up hot air bubbles of complaints for non existent issues.

The problem i am describing applies to EVERY user with a mac laptop and not enough internel storage to hold ‘download original files’. Sorry if you dont understand that basic fact.

The fact that we all somehow survive and are clever enough to buy the tools we need tells you how much of an issue this is. Get a solution that works. Apples mainstream apps don’t cover your use case. Waiting on them won’t do you good. They abandoned the pro market for photographers a long time ago with the death of aperture including any solutions of any complexity.

Yep, i guess 'backing up my photos' calls for a 'solutions of any complexity'.

No, that's not how it works.
The Google Photos app gets the full size image from iCloud if you have optimize storage turned on and it isn't already stored on your phone. It does not upload the low resolution thumbnail stored on your phone. This is easily verifiable.
I wasn’t aware of that. How is Google Photos accessing the iCloud account?

Yeah you have to use a better and more professional tool for backups of external drives. Big deal.
There IS NO better and more professional tool . THAT is the issue. If you know a tool that can download my original photos from icloud photos let me know.

What you find no tool that has better photo management than Apple photos? Must check with all these other photographers out there with Workflows outside of apples entry level toys. Do you think all the folks with Lightroom or similar solutions can’t do backups?

Icloud photos, the apple eco system. Shared photos across all devices. Shared albums with family and friends. How do I view and access my light room libraries on my iphone ? How do any pictures I take on my ipad get to my light room library ?

For a stalker, yeah

For cloud based services that are syncing across devices it’s business as usual. Now compare that to the profiles FB or the big G ad company creates. Or compare it to your wireless carrier who’s tracking your phone 24/7.

Apple is doing all of those.

Many comments here, and maybe someone answered the question but … WHY??? Why would Apple do that in that way when if you have photos on your phone and have a Google account and Google photos app on your phone, you just turn on that option of uploading to Google photos in the app? Of it the case of two monopolistic - or viewed as - companies protecting their rears from a lawsuit?
I’m just thinking about the risks of loss of photos and Apple exposing themselves to irate customers with people thinking their photos will be safe in Google photos and realize they’re missing a few of them (see restrictions) or they’re resized and compressed in Google photos. People don’t read the fine print doing that kind of stuff …
