They sure happen to replace a lot of cables and power connectors lately...

but hey, it happens to anyone. so I am not going to blame Apple here...

just the process of doing so is painful and not thought through. just like with Lenovo and Microsoft.

While I'm happy they're addressing these flaws, it just points out their declining quality control. I've been moaning about QC since I joined here, but the last couple of years have been particularly bad between hardware and software flaws / bugs.

I really hope Mr. Cook will do something about QC.

I hate to pile on the criticism, but either the recalls are increasing or coverage of the criticism is increasing. Not sure which it is. The products I've bought are fine, but it's a little odd that things like this are happening. How do you mess up a simple cable so badly that it needs to be recalled? Or maybe it's a case of Tim Cook feeling like the right thing to do is to recall as opposed to denying problems and just dealing with them as customers raise them.

I'm assuming its tide to my Apple ID. I just logged into the Apple ID site and changed my home address.
Have a solution from support now - the cable will most likely be sent to the same address your MacBook order was sent to.

They have cancelled my automatic replacement and set up a new one to my current address. Was an ordeal but they figured it out in the end. :)

Also, for anyone wondering, it appears you won't have to send your current one back - or at least that's what it says with my repair ID.

one question: do batteries suffer from this cables' behaviour? my knowledge is that this continue power on-off is a bad thing for batteries

I see a lightning cable on the picture provided by Apple not a USB-C charge cable? I am still searching for the label on my MacBook USB-C cable.
Has the photo changed? I see a USB-C cable just like mine on Apple site & in MR article above. I eventually found the tiny grey text by using a jeweller's eyepiece.

Are you as perfect as you expect Apple to be?

Come on, man. That's so overused. Can't we come up with something more original?

Never ever had a problem with those. You are doing it wrong!

Stuff happens. Remember, apple, like so many companies, must be dependent upon other companies who supply parts and those companies may not be perfect no matter how much they are vetted.

You could start one.

Oh please. Massive exaggeration and hyperbole are the undercurrents of the forum.

OMG, Apple is doing it wrong again!! Can't they get anything right?

No literally every product has had a recall or major issue of some sort. Every iPhone has since I can remember as well, whether it's the antenna, battery or weakness of the structure, the iPhone 6s from my experience has the worst bluetooth performance.

Degrading product quality is usually either a sign of worse QA, or internal strife at the company (resulting in random things here and there not being done, or not being done as well). I'm guessing that this is mostly Tim's fault, seeing as how this degradation started when he took office.

generally speaking : yes.
in this case: no.

if you want to do something good for your battery : keep it at the temperature. and don't charge or discharge it. ;-)

on a serious note : batteries can handle way more sustained abuse than the electronic circuitry coupled to it.

And yet you still support money grubbing Apple by purchasing their products. Why in the world would you do that, letting Apple have that much power over your life?

No... I am completely switched to Android... Very happy with my Moto X and Nexus 5X... I still gonna use iPad...but you know, will be switch to Surface sometime.

It's very simple: I will not be buying a computer that only has one connectivity port, especially if that port is also the charging port. And Apple already has the best charging port in the biz: the Mag Safe, so why wouldn't they use it?

And I'm not the only one.

They basically took the MacBook and made it into an iPhone/MacBook hybrid. I suppose that's good enough for some people, but not for me.

Many people are fine with a computer having only 1 port.

How about apple fix the bazillion faulty lightning cables which fray and break at the lightning end. Absolute garbage.

Unlike MagSafe, USB-C is an industry standard. If you don't like Apples cable use another one.
Problem solved.

Yeah... This time third party is OK, but not OK with TouchID... I thought Apple will give me error 53 when I am not using original cable. I thought Apple will protect my MacBook burn in fire by brick my MacBook.

What else would guarantee people buy lightning cable regularly and shove up 25 dollars to Apple for a cable? This is Apple's way to upsell their cable

It's time to end the production of the ridiculous 2015 MacBook. It cannibalizes it's own product lineup, while offering fewer features. It is probably the most ridiculous product they released in the past few years, besides perhaps the iPhone 5c. Why did they simply not refresh the MacBook Air line up by slimming down the 11in and 13in bezel to make it 12in and 14in, add haptic feedback, and add retina display? Apple is becoming a bit of a joke lately. It's an overused saying, but Jobs would absolutely flip out if he saw half of what was going on at Apple today. Cook clearly lacks what it takes to be CEO of Apple. Perhaps he would make a better CEO of IBM or something. Watch it happen.

Might be time for Captain Cook to walk the plank.

Why is there such a big problem with USB C cables? Apple isn't alone in having problems with them. What's up with it? Are USB C cables really so hard to design right?
