No one has thought of this as the staggered approach used by Samsung? Samsung releases the Galaxy S phone first, then the Note later. Even though the Note is a different phone, I think Apple is using this approach for their 5.5" to fill gaps in the iPhone cycle.

But why is that to their advantage? You get the 4.7", then they come out with the 5.5". Now you feel some buyer's remorse when you realise you would have preferred the 5.5", and they have missed out on selling you the larger (presumably more costly) phone. Are they expecting you to buy BOTH?

Like others here, I just don't get the logic.

PS. You think your iPhone 5 is long in the tooth? You should try my 3G! :)

Exactly......

This makes no sense. People who really want the 5.5-Inch version will wait anyways..

Seems an asinine reason to delay a product. I doubt the margins will be drastically different between the two versions, and it's highly unlikely that people will buy both, so all they're doing is giving the competition extra time to market their larger screen phones to potential customers.

And anyway, if they don't show both in September, I'd question the existence of the 5.5" model.

agreed.

My take is that Apple will keep the 5s in circulation at the SAME price point and release the new 4.7 one for a $100 bucks more. Keeping a teared pricing structure. No need to devaluate the 5s this year with a more expensive one when first adopters will not bat an eye at paying more for the latest greatest.

Who in their right mind would buy last years phone with this years prices? That makes absolutely no sense what so ever, unless Apple thinks that their customers are in general dumber than a footstool.

5C - Free
5S - $100
6 (4.7") - $200
6 (5.5") - I'll believe it when I see it.

Irrelevant.

I'm not dumb, so I realize that this is a stupid rumor from useless sources (digitimes), so it has 0 value.

But:

Apple should separate launches. Not because of competition, but to not have 9 months of silence and to avoid the usual seasonal drop in sales. No? Besides, it would be easier to organize the supply chain.

I hope that screen size is the only difference between the 3 possible iPhone lines (4", 4.7", 5.5").

Everybody would be happy.

I'm just going to wait and take my sweet time to decide if I am going to buy the iPhone and which size. It might next year depending on when the "unlocked" model that I want is release.

So Apple market can play it strategy; I will just buy it my leisure.

In the end, I might even go again with something else too.

Like I said even before the 5C was released, there will not be a discounted metal 5S, Either its full price or not at all. Maybe a plastic discounted 5SC, but no metal 5S at discounted prices. Foolish to do so. Just throw a plastic case on it instead if you want to discount it. But too much of a high end device to lose the margins like that.

Does this mean make the larger model available later, or announce it later. That will PO a lot of people that would buy the 4.7" but prefer the 5.5" version.

Why would people who are waiting for the larger phone buy the smaller one out of aggravation? wouldn't they either wait for the larger one, or buy a larger phone from samsung, i.e., Note.

I don't see people buying a phone that doesn't suit the needs because they got pissed off at apple for not releasing the larger phone

If true, I suppose this makes it easier to swallow the fact I'm trying out a Galaxy S5 for now. I definitely have no interest in the 4.7", but the 5.5" is a different story.

I think the delay is probably more about guaging consumer demand. The 'mistake' made with the 5s and 5c was that apple was way off in estimating launch day demand. So maybe they release the less risky model first and see how that goes before releasing a phablet that is more difficult to predict consumer demand for.

"To avoid competition between two models"... how, exactly? I don't see the point.

Exactly. Why would Apple care which people buy, as long as we're buying?

Available later, I'll wait. Announced later, I'll buy a 4.7" and then sell it when the 5.5" is out.

Apple still believes the 5c problem was releasing it the same time as the 5s??!

Yes, of course. It had nothing to do with the fact that it was a rebranded iphone 5 in an 'unapologetically plastic' case. I think Apple is worried that people might get the regular ip6 and place it in an oversized 'unapologetically plastic' case to make it LOOK like a 5.5" version to confuse the marketplace.

On a more serious note, I know Apple sold a lot of iphone 5Cs but, living in Southern California and working part time in the Silicon Valley, I can honestly say I have never seen a single iphone 5C in use anywhere.

All this speculation only fuels one thing, more sales.

Well played Apple.

??? How so ???

IF (big IF) there is a 5.5", it certainly has more battery capacity because of the increased size. Nobody will buy a 4.7" and later go for a 5.5".

Not more sales at all.

I believe the 5.5" is a concept for Asian markets.
They will not introduce it in the US or Europe at all.

The "competition" rationale is 100% speculation. IF Apple does end up releasing the 5.5" next spring it will NOT be to decrease competition. It will either be a) production issues or b) to avoid the big up and down swings in iPhone sales quarter to quarter. I think option B makes a lot of sense.
