Competition with each other? This makes about zero sense to me. You buy one or the other and Apple notches an iPhone sale. What am I missing here?

Why would people who are waiting for the larger phone buy the smaller one out of aggravation? wouldn't they either wait for the larger one, or buy a larger phone from samsung, i.e., Note.

I don't see people buying a phone that doesn't suit the needs because they got pissed off at apple for not releasing the larger phone

I meant people that prefer a 5.5 inch phone may buy the 4.7 inch not realizing that Apple will later announced a 5.5 inch.

And I also meant those deeply integrate into Apple services because those are the least likely to look to competitors.

I'm not dumb, so I realize that this is a stupid rumor from useless sources (digitimes), so it has 0 value.

But:

Apple should separate launches. Not because of competition, but to not have 9 months of silence and to avoid the usual seasonal drop in sales. No? Besides, it would be easier to organize the supply chain.

I hope that screen size is the only difference between the 3 possible iPhone lines (4", 4.7", 5.5").

Everybody would be happy.

I disagree. There is always a seasonal drop in consumer electronics products, because the technology advances so rapidly.

If Apple waited 6 months to launch the 5.5" version, people would say that buyers should hold out and wait for the bigger screen. Then when it comes, people will say that buyers should hold out and wait for the iPhone 7 because the 6 is already half-way through its lifecycle.

Even if Apple shortened their update cycle to 6 months from the current annual updates, that seasonal drop would just happen sooner.

Apple are so big, and the iPhone is so big, that rumours about the next version spread very widely and not just to folks who have a primary interest in technology. It doesn't really matter how they do their updates - people will still know that there's a new release imminent and hold back their purchases.

This doesn't happen with Android so much due to the number of manufacturers and diversity of hardware. Also, people just don't have as high expectations of companies like Samsung as they do of Apple. Every new iPhone is expected to be a big deal or to introduce some amazing new thing and to advance the state of the art. People just don't expect that of Samsung or Sony or LG, etc.

Hey wait a minute....wasn't everyone screaming that the original size was the 'perfect size' not too log ago?

I guess 'perfection' is a moving target when it comes to Apple and it devotees. Or, perhaps, Samsung did get one thing right that they didn't steal from Apple: people DO want a larger phone cuz they can't read the tiny screen on the iphone 3,4,5, 5c and 5S.

I definitely wasn't one of those people. :)

My one complaint with the current iPhone is the screen size, so consider me giddy that we're getting a 4.7".

This rumor makes no sense at all. Most people will buy one phone. It's not like by delaying a couple of months, each person will buy both. Apple should not care if I choose 4.7" or 5.5". Release both, and let people choose.

Same old same old...

What mistake was made with launching the 5s and 5c exactly? ...

The mistake that the bloggers/media/analysts made up and pushed as a story to see if they could have an actual impact on the company. This fake story will be retold for many years in history books as a mistake made by Apple in order to expressed how fair and balanced they are.

People who can look through Sales & Marketing BS know that neither the 4 or 5S were the ideal size for everybody.

I don't care if I reach something with my thumb when I don't use my thumb for the action I want to happen.

Some want their phones to easily fit into their front pant pockets, some don't care yadyada.

In the end we are finally getting size options.

These will be wild sellers and all the naysayers all switch to the larger size and claim that finally that is the ideal size., until the next ideal size comes along.

Still not reading about 128 GB. More important than antenna lines on the back to me.

Disappointing, but understandable (if true).

I don't see it as being understandable at all. People either want the 4.7 or the 5.5. The only way this would make sense is if Apple expects the majority of 5.5 buyers to buy the 4.7 and then turn around and buy the 5.5 a few months later which I doubt many people would do. If anything it would have a greater likelihood of pushing potential iPhone buyers to Android for larger phones because they may not want to wait an additional few months.

"The different timetables have been set as Apple does not want to repeat the mistake it made in 2013 when it launched the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c simultaneously, said the sources."

So not only do they they make things up but they also believe their own lies.

i dont see the point really unless Apple / iOS suddenly takes advantage of bigger screen sizes. i mean even the iPad (which i own) is basically the iPhone OS zoomed out without any special features that take advantage of the bigger screen. Hasnt really evolved much in that area since the first iPhone on a 3.5 screen. maybe those widgets in the notification center are a start.

id like to have a pen for the 5.5 one that actually lets me write and easily take notes on it but i doubt it will happen. so far its a real pain in the a ... to "write" on iOS devices

"Supply chain sources" wouldn't have any idea why Apple might launch a product at a particular time. (They might have a decent idea of when, but not why.)

Further, it doesn't make any sense: a delta of a couple of months wouldn't significantly ease the competition between two devices... (1) people don't buy phones that fast; (2) that would only temporarily delay the competition.

This whole rumor is nonsense.

The mistake was developing the 5C and not launching it together with the 5S. That phone should have never been made. Now if you launch 2 models with different sizes how is that bad? Do they think people will only buy the 4.7 if they do not have the option to buy the 5.5? It is about preference. Same thing when you buy a TV. Or they think Samsung will hold the launch of a 65 inches because that may hurt the sales of the 55 inches model? Total BS!!! It is time for Apple to let customers decide what they want. I hope they launch both sizes at the same time and have the unlocked version at the launch and stop this BS of holding that for months and tell customers that a TMobile phone is locked, etc...

I'm kinda lucky that my eligibility for upgrade is not until Feb. I really want to see how the 4.7 inch feels, I currently have the Lumia 1520 and I think its a tad large, a 4.7 might just be hitting that sweet spot for a phone for me.

One person's statement does not equate to everyone. Did you even check his/her post history so you could even cite him/her on a personal level?

Well, several years ago I was totally trashed on this very board for saying that the now dead Saint Jobs should have made the screen bigger on the original iPhone so I do have some perspective on the subject.

The mistake was trying to flog an iphone 5 internals in a colourful phone, and charge people more money.

Except it would've cost the same ($100 off). And it would've been something new and refreshing, rather than 'the cheap old' model that the 5 had been. And the camera was better..

no 5.5 parts are leaked

has there been a single 5.5 parts leak? we have tons from the 4.7...i say it not even happening until next year. when we see parts from it, then we can start believing...

What competition? The people that want the smaller phone will buy it and the people that want the larger phone will buy it.

I'll wait and get what I want. It's always amazing to me how many people will settle and just get what is available because they're not willing to wait, especially when it's an expensive electronic device... They have wanted a 64GB black ipad with a 3G radio but will take the 16GB white wifi model because they don't want to wait. No sense to me.

----------

It's so people who buy the 4.7 will also buy the 5.5 once they get bored of the 4.7.
that doesn't make sense... Are there really THAT many people who would get in a contract for one who would change in just 6 months? That's an expensive obsession.

I'm wondering what will become of the 5c.

Maybe they'll update the internals to the 5s and call it the "5c with Touch ID."

Or just sell the same exact thing and hope some people don't notice, i.e. iPad 2.

Disappointing, but understandable (if true).

I disagree.

The people that want the 5.5 will get that and the others will get the 4.7 and overtime. Like the first quarter it will all even out.

If anything, they will sell more 5.5's and that what they want to really avoid.

They should drop it and move on.

Seems like a supply issue.
