It's possible that Apple plans to release the 5.5" iPhone in April/May 2015 which is the release period for Samsung, HTC, LG, etc. Apple may also release the 4.7" iPhone 6s at this time, 7-8 months after the release of the iPhone 6, with an A9, slightly improved camera and maybe Audio by Beats??? All speculation of course.

I believe this article just as much as I believe their is an actual 5.5-inch phone being released from Apple. In other words: not at all.

When I start to see some actual hardware leaks of that version and not just rumor after rumor that it is being delayed so they can have a reason to say why their aren't anyway leaks, then I'll believe it. Until then it's analysts trying to cover themselves so they don't look completely dumb when they were wrong this entire time.

I'm sure we will have another rumor from an analyst after the announcement of the 4.7-inch phone that Apple decided to wait until the 6S cause of the delay.

This makes no sense, as the 4.7 and the 5.5 hit drastically different markets. If there is delay in launch it will be because of supply chains, which is quite common for Apple.

The 5S/C issue was that the the 5C was (at least in rumor) supposed to be the "cheaper" iPhone for the masses, yet it was not.

"To avoid competition between two models"... how, exactly? I don't see the point.

Probably because the people that want the 5.5 inch will now buy the 4.7 inch model and then buy the 5.5 inch model also, when it's released.

Apple still believes the 5c problem was releasing it the same time as the 5s??!

What was the 5c problem? That it pushed Apple to record growth? Or that it outsold Blackberry, Windows Phone and every Android flagship in the quarter following it's release?

... as the 4.7 and the 5.5 hit drastically different markets...

How many preorder their iPhone before even testing it? These people don't care that much if it is 3,5" 4" 4.7" or 5.5", they just want to have the new, one and only premium iPhone.

By offering two premium models, they will have to choose whether they want more display+better batterylife or one thats fits better in the pocket.
They may buy an new iPhone and still feel not having the nonplusultra iPhone.

If Apple is about to bring an Phablet, they will have to rename it to iPhone Air/Mate/Note... and bring it with a delay. Just like Samsung with its Note, LG with its Pro and HTC with its MAX.

Sounds stupid but people are stupid. People will also get upset if manufacturers update their phone too early, even it wouldn't make their own phone worse.

I don't know if this has been brought up, but Apple may try to take advantage of all the people now on these new AT&T Next/Verizon Edge type plans, by going to a quicker release schedule with different sizes/models.

This makes no sense. The 5S was a superior product. In this case, they're 2 totally different products. Neither is superior, one is just absurdly large (imo). I'll be getting the 4.7" no matter what. They could release the 5.5 today and I'd wait, and most people probably have their minds made up.

You said it "in the quarter following it's release", while other manufacturers where about to release their Phones in Q1 and naturally the selling rate drops just before the release of a new generation. And don't forget there is also a market outside the US, where Apple has a much lower market share.
The 5C was a flop, believe it or not...

This is a load of rubbish.
In any case, I’m waiting for iPhone 6. If both sizes come at the same time I’ll probably go for the larger size... but if the 5.5 is delayed I’ll get the 4.7 because I can’t wait any longer, my Iphone 4 is painfully slow and under no circumstances I would buy a 5.5 if it comes months later.
I don’t see why the two iPhones can be competing with each other... some people buy one or the other, not another one a few months down the line

The problem for me is I'm still on 4s and I've already been waiting for Apple to come up with a larger phone for a year and a half. Really hope they don't delay the 5.5 any longer. Tired of waiting.

People do care, especially for business the 5.5 makes way more sense.

Right now, I'm on a very good cycle with our upgrades. I'm due for an upgrade 9/18/14 and my wife is due 9/xx/15. That means that our family can get ONE new iPhone every year if we choose to do so. If I wait for a supposed 5.5" because I want 128GB, I screw up my upgrade cycle. I know, I know, "first world problems"

Being locked into some weird "upgrade cycle" with set dates when you can buy a new phone doesn't sound very "first world" to me. More like Soviet Russia... Yes, that's it... "In Soviet Russia phone upgrades you"

Why would I buy a 4.7" phone if I want one with a 5.5" screen? I don't understand?

Not ME!
In fact if the 5.5" doesnt exist, I wont ever own another iPhone!

Also, its probably the other way around. If the 5.5" came out first, there would probably be more sales that get the 5.5" and find out its too big, THEN they buy the 4.7" for 2 sales.

doesn't matter which comes first...

There's gonna be nit picking regardless afterwards.

The 5c failed because it was an appalling product and rubbish value for money compared to the 5s.

Maybe that was the point.

Apple dangled the 5c out in front of people... but for only $100 more you got a much better phone with TouchID and current internals in a slimmer metal body. And thus, more people chose the 5s instead of the 5c.

But I don't think the 5c was the failure everyone says it is. Didn't the 5c as the 2nd-tier iPhone outsell the 4s when it was the 2nd-tier model a year ago?

I'm not sure what that means....

I'd venture a guess that most cell phone users (at least in the U.S.) are under contract with their carrier... That's how it works. We're all "locked into some weird upgrade cycle" ....it's about every 2 years....

For me to ignore that would be to ignore the fact that a portion of my bill goes toward the cost of them subsidizing a phone for me -- whether I buy one every 2 years or not... and that would be a waste of money...

So I'm not sure if you're truly ignorant to how the cell phone industry works or you're trying to be clever in advocating for the off-contract route.

Either way it just comes off a bit snide.

haha, a snide comment that doesn't clearly state the intended message.... what is this? Macrumors?!?!

Agreed, they're not competing with themselves here, but with Samsung, LG, and others who make phablets. Why give them more opportunity for sales because you don't want to risk selling less 4.7 models over the 5.5.

The more I think about this, the more insane this is.

This^ x1,000,000.

Why in earth make people wait for a large iPhone when that's the single biggest reason people switched to droid? I swear this is just silly!!!

worst part is ill but the 4.7, then sell and buy the 5.5. I won't be happy about it. but I do LOVE my iPhones, it's the one of few things I splurge on. (not rich/ broke college student)

If apple delays the 5.5 launch for several months and then it releases and bombs.. it will not be because of the phone, that's all I'm saying. people will be tired of waiting and waiting and will have made that terrible switch to the dark side.

One person's statement does not equate to everyone. Did you even check his/her post history so you could even cite him/her on a personal level?

do you really go through and check someone's post history before quoting them? how much free time do you have daily? work from home? I woukd never waste my time on that, unless it was a bet or something
