Doubtful. I'm sure it's absolutely possible, but the car manufacturers won't allow it. For instance, Honda doesn't update the capability of its own app on older models -- because they want us to buy/trade in for new cars.
Right, most likely that's what we're looking at. Kind of like having to upgrade to a 4S for Siri :)

I can think of nothing less than I want in a vehicle than these apps clouding up my space. My first order of business is to delete and disable all of Apple’s functionality that does anything not absolutely pivotal to the ability to work with the apps I actually want to use on there.

The reasons I love the iPhone:
* It provides a secure and relatively fluid OS experience. This specifically excludes the hoards of inane settings and STUPID preloaded apps that all completely and utterly suck! This includes but is not limited to: Reminders, Apple Maps, Apple Music, Compass, Weather, Stocks, Health, Fitness, and largely, Safari (which I am for no reason still forced with if I want to do something so simple as to auto-fill my address… obnoxious.)
* Oh wait, this was a love list. Um, and iMessages and contact synching.

Please, someone tell me what awful UI/UX designer decided I need to see two separate lists of every single app installed on my phone (one in Siri & Search) and one underneath the already massive list of settings menus). This is the software equivalence of a a crime against humanity.

The reasons I love a car:
* It moves my rear end from the place I am to the place I want to be.

What makes me hate a car:
* When it distracts me more to be in it and I have to physically ignore what I’m doing so it can take over the experience “smartly” for me and make me more liable to crash suppressing its stupidity…

So what is presented so far looks like my idea of a nightmare. I’d sooner ride around in a lawnmower. I can’t believe they’re still trying to push Apple Maps on people for as long as that product has blown chunks. The best feature they could provide would be an “Uninstall All” and the ability to load up what I actually want on there. Why can no company simply provide a working OS platform with important things (efficient memory management and security) without forcing their crap UI/UX and privacy SINS onto me until the world fights them tooth and nail not to? We need to build a real alternative to both of these evils… where is the beautiful, simple, minimalist, generic OS that macOS used to at least somewhat represent? Now it’s a popup Hell worse than Windows Vista!!!!

The weather view is long overdue, but unless it includes radar and visual warnings, it's useless.

I can look out of my car window to see what the weather is. I want to know about the tornado a couple miles ahead of me on the road.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I really don't like CarPlay. I installed an aftermarket head unit that supported CarPlay in my vehicle and I found it very laggy and I didn't care for the UI. It was nice having directions on a large screen, but I really hated the Music app. I'm so much faster finding things on the phone, so I found myself constantly reaching for the phone anyway. I'm in the market for new vehicle and CarPlay support is probably the least important feature to me.
There's definitely lots of room for improvement with CarPlay. Maybe the renderings in the article are a step in the right direction. 🤞

The lights are adjustable in both real and virtual dashboards. Set your internal lights to bright and you’ll lose night sight regardless of what’s throwing out the photons.
True but when the dashboard has only a few items as most cars today it is less of an issue. In any case the rest of my preferences would be unmet with losing physical controls and adding distraction.

Of course it does. And CarPlay forces me to exit CarPlay to adjust it… kinda the whole point of them adding it to CarPlay, and what should be the easiest thing for manufacturers to allow. But I doubt they will with any immediacy. And who listens to it? 92% of the population. It’s higher than tv viewership.

What does your FM radio need adjusting for that you can’t do from the steering wheel controls?

It… already does that.

You don't actually even have CarPlay do you? If you did, you would know that CarPlay takes over the infotainment screen and the audio of your car. In order to see (or more importantly hear) the radio, you have to exit CarPlay. It has been that way since the beginning.

Looking forward to reboot this while driving 130mph on the autobahn…
And that's why we won't be seeing this running like it looks in the photo for a few years yet, it'll take ages for car companies to safely implement it correctly and test.

I drive a Polestar that has one of the first if not first implementation of Android Automotive. If the system freezes up or bugs out I can reset it on the main entertainment screen. If I do, all the important gauges on my instrument cluster such as speedometer, ODO, and error messages stay there, as does the reverse camera. Anything necessary for driving- all that stuff stays rock solid.

So, with this new CarPlay, vehicle manufacturers must test and implement it in a way that if it bugs out it doesn't impact the basic functionality of your vehicle- Your maps can black out, but your ‘fuel’ gauge must always be accessible, etc.

Soo, if implemented correctly, it's no issue if you have to reboot it while on the autobahn. In my P2, I do this occasionally and all it means Is that I lose maps, music, and bluetooth stuff for 5 minutes.

I don't mind this for the dash screen, but not sure I would want this for the digital gauge cluster screen. I like the analog dial look and the car info provided there. I want CarPlay primarily for music, calls, and navigation - the infotainment component that manufacturers just can't get right. I'm looking to purchase in a few months and I don't see Lexus, one of my top contenders, on this list.

How? Specifically. I have had CarPlay since the beginning and it has never done that.
Last few times I put in directions thru a weather event it warned me if conditions ahead on the map screen. Let me see if I can find a screenshot.

That was the best addition in ages. With the way Tesla stock is going Apple might be able to buy Tesla for $5M, get rid of EM, and turn that into the endlessly rumoured Apple Car. 🤔😀
lol never gonna happen, thats a huge anti trust lawsuit waiting to happen. the us gov't would never allow that.

Must be just yours. I can have radio (FM, AM, SXM) running while using CarPlay. Even get two separate volume sliders when adjusting volume from the steering wheel. One for whatever music I’m playing and one for map guidance / Siri.
