CarPlay should be Apple's top #1 priority in 2023.
Here I think you dropped this -> /s

Edit: without elaboration that’s a pretty bold statement. Maybe as a revenue stream from licensing it to carmakers, but I think Apple has a lot on its plate they need to focus on before CarPlay. The auto industry moves notoriously slowly, I’m not sure I want Apple to be completely in control of all my interactions with a car, and CarPlay as it is now is pretty good and has plenty of room for improvement as is. It’s not that they shouldn’t work on it but I don’t think it should be #1.

How about Siri, or figuring out what they really want to do with the iPhone besides play sizing musical chairs, or the iPad, or the increasingly iPadOS-like Mac that could use some attention on the software side.

Or the AR headset. That seems more achievable and in line with what they are good at, and a new growth market.

Yes actually.

"Apple says the first vehicles to support the new system will be announced in late 2023 (yes, late next year), although it has already confirmed a long list of partner brands, including Ford, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti, Honda, Acura, Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi, Nissan, Renault, Volvo, Polestar and Porsche."

Seems pretty straight forward.
not really straight forward, it just says the first vehicles to support them will be “announced“ late 2023 not that only late 2023 cars will support this feature.

Tailoring the display for each vehicle suggests to me our vehicles are going to feel like throw-aways every 5 years because updates won't be forthcoming after that.

Based on the intergration of my iPads with my Macs, I can see it now.

Maybe slightly off-topic, but every one of those pictures looks exactly like the iPhone. I don’t know if they’re mockups or what, but the fact they are making an FM radio app makes me wonder if they would ever release it for iPhone as well.

I could see Apple having the ‘courage’ to remove AM/FM radio from their own car in favor of data only. The argument can be (and may legally be) made that FM/AM is a safety feature in cars. The same argument could be made of the phone, unless I’m mistaken (please tell me if I am) the same hardware that picks up cell signals could also receive FM.

It will be interesting to see if this requires new hardware or if existing sets can be updated but with fewer features like iOS / iPadOS upgrades. Historically car manufacturers have been pretty poor with updates after release or try and charge for them but the same used to be true with phones until apple put their foot down and said not with ours.

isn't that kinda what makes them average and not first adopters? 🤷🏻‍♂️
They are one of the levels within the ones with the money

1. Deep Pockets who get everything the want because they have the money
2. Deep Pockets who are still discretionary and won't buy stuff not worth it to them
3. Average who don't physically have the money
4. Average who technically have the money but didn't pay any more important bills so are homeless or without a car etc

Until this is on a shipping car, it is highly theoretical.
BMW, Mercedes, and Hyundai won’t have it. Volvo and GM in bed with Android / Google Automotive.
Honda maybe? (2025/26 Odyssey?)
And does this tap into the Blackberry QNX car IoT bus?

This is not going to be well integrated. They have no control over the cars hardware, this is just a sidejob for the time being.
Isn't that what is being promised? For example, according to the article, you'll be able to adjust climate control settings. How well this will work in practice remains to be seen, though. I have wireless CarPlay in my BMW, and it doesn't even connect consistently.

I would settle with car manufacturers tweaking their design to minimize outside interference with Wireless CarPlay and connect quicker. There are some locations where CarPlay always disconnects and it happens with a couple different car makers. It could be an iPhone thing too, but I think is more on the car side.

QNX is the integration layer. Cars, elevators, other stuff.

This is why the Genesis G90 doesn’t have it.

Haha. All the brands of vehicles that no one buys anymore. Strange.
you realize three of the brands mentioned here manufacture six of the top ten cars sold in the U.S., right?

edit: @sw1tcher reminded me that top-selling cars doesn’t include SUVs/trucks. to reiterate his point, the F-150 is the #1 vehicle in the U.S. sooo…yeah, this comment is pretty cap

I guess i don't get your point. Yes, all those categories (and more) exist. Well, maybe except for the last one. If someone has money and is homeless, CarPlay is the least of their worries. My response was to the comment about an early adopter who "simply won't pay for" the latest features, etc. By definition that is how you differentiate between the "average" consumer and an "early adopter". The early adopters are willing to pay for it because it does interest them. You are confusing "average" as ones who have the means vs the ones who don't. In this scenario, the only ones who matter, all have the "means" so #3 and #4 are irrelevant
