According to autoblog BMW is considering this. I doubt they will let Mercedes get all the glory on them, bmw lead the way in tech like HUD, idrive. Mercedes leads the Germans in safety and other gizmos. Audi has their LEDs.

I'm surprised Opel/Vauxhall aren't a launch partner as I think the Opel/Vauxhall Adam was the first European car to have Siri Eyes Free. Also the Keynote slide Eddy Cue used to announce iOS in the Car showed the Opel/Vauxhall (I think Chevrolet in the US) Intellilink infotainment system working with iOS in the Car.

Hopefully more models will be announced at Geneva

oh yea, that's right :p Stick iOS in the car for the "better" ones first..

Points have already pointed out the flaws here, namly not everything you see on the phone matches whats on the display in terms of dialog boxes, and/or other stuff..

Isn't this supposed to be a exact mirror image ?

Not bad.

I wonder if older gen Ferraris and Benzes will receive these softwares?
Probably wishful thinking but it would be nice.

Touch screens as a panel in a car is still godawful experience!

I never complained about losing the 'tactical' feedback on the phone, but in a car I definitely should not have to take my eyes off the road! Not even Tesla gets this right.

Every cars' software (user facing) has been terrible. From the beginning of time. Tesla finally has something half-way decent. iOS in the car is good for the industry and helps cars differentiate themselves. Great move. Hope it works super well and they start to expose things like Siri to other apps, etc.

The next generation UI from Volvo looks extremely promising, imo even better than current Tesla UI - it has simpler, bigger touch controls + essential functions still have dedicated physical buttons. iOS in the car integration will be icing on a cake. All around very promising.

Don't know why they moved the on screen home button from the bottom centre to the left hand side. Kind of makes it difficult for cars that are right hand drive. Hopefully there will be an option to mirror that.

I'm waiting to buy a new car until this crap is universal :D
Don't want to buy a car and then next year this comes out on my car :D

Anyone with a Benz?

Zero chance of a retrofit me thinks, even for a relatively new car. Siri would be really cool. I have bluetooth and the Mbrace/Sirius thing, which works, but I've been thinking about this for a while. Of course there's always aftermarket butchers.

SOL i'm certain.

Not likely. They want you to trade up to a new car for the cost of a Honda.

I would consider paying quite a bit of money (well, more than the $80 I spent o my last head unit) for a head unit that actually made my phone usable in the car. My current unit plays music via bluetooth just fine, but I can't get the built-in mic to work, and so Siri is pretty much useless.
Buy a better head unit? The Pioneer I just installed for my wife (DEH-X4600BT ~$120 installed) has a mic which works beautifully with Siri Eyes Free and for in-car calls. She leaves the BT headset home now.

More importantly for those who haven't put it together:

Quote from article:
The technology group will next week launch its first in-car operating system with Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo as it attempts to take the lead in a fierce race to dominate tomorrow's smart cars.

7.1 next week?

It appears so. 7.1 has a "Car Display" setting in restrictions.

This pretty much confirms iOS 7.1 is going to be released next week.

Seems likely. Now that's some news!

What is the state of Apple maps in the US?
Here they are exactly as bad as when they where introduced. Very few POI and the few that exists are always in the wrong location. I reported several of them but no success after almost 2 years of bad maps.

For example, I have 4 Petrol stations near me, in Apple maps the only one I have close is a book shop who never was a petrol station.

Since BMW already have their own Ecosystem of supported apps through the iPhone and proper maps from Navteq I don't see iOS in BMW any time soon.

Still quite awful here in NYC.

I guess we all know who their target audience is.....the middle class never gets the good stuff  Maybe someday Ford will have the opportunity and I can have that feature in my F150!!;)

Doubt it. iOS In The Car isn't that big of a deal to be honest. It's nothing more than an extension of iOS into the car for the user and doesn't really provide any car with an advantage other than being associated with Apple.

BMW has invested so much in iDrive that there is no reason for them to incorporate iOS In The Car because iDrive already works a lot better with integrating smartphones (sans Android) relative to other infotainment systems found in other cars. What they're deciding to do is use Siri: Eyes Free but that's something different. This is one thing I like about BMW, they try to remain independent in their operations as much as possible and don't find the need to go out and incorporate other companies, if they want something in their car, they're likely to do it themselves.

Mercedes needs iOS In The Car more than BMW because their COMAND is junk. If people think iDrive was bad, try using COMAND. Merdedes isn't even putting any effort into improving it so by partnering up with Apple, it will allow them to "improve" their infotainment system without having to do anything.

I really hope this comes out in the 2015 Mazda3. I just can't justify buying a car that gets outdated at the speed of a phone or computer.

Mercedes is in desperate need of some intelligence in their cars. Their own apps are junk and they charge customers by the month to use them. They're really lame. This will fill the creativity void in their cars.

Rumor is Ford will be dropping Microsoft from their cars because of all the complaints they are getting from my Ford Touch.

While the rumors currently is that will go with blackberry and QNX I think they might be better served looking at IOS in the car

They aren't competing: iOS in the Car is not software that runs on your car. Ford still needs(?) that, maybe from BlackBerry. iOS in the Car is software thar runs on your phone, controlled through the car.

It's the reverse of what many people assume. It's not iOS controlling your car... it's your car controlling iOS!

Ditto: this isn't about iOS controlling your car or replacing physical controls. It's about taking your iPhone's driver-useful functions (like navigation. music, and audible text messages) which already use a touchscren (the iPhone's own) and giving them a bigger, better touchscreen dedicated to the driving activity.

iOS in the Car is not comparable to any existing car system or product. It's a while different take. A more limited one, thank goodness, since I'm with you: no touchscreens for car stuff like climate control, please!

(As for music, we already have steering wheel controls to control the iPhone, and iOS in the Car wouldn't change that; it would just provide a bigger display for the song info etc.)
