I doubt your right. Honestly, they aren't going to let mercedes get them here.

Get where? BMW thinks it has a good infotainment system that is better than Mercedes and Audi and I agree. I would agree with you but the difference is BMW has put time and resources into actually improving iDrive and has no need for iOS vs. Mercedes who have done nothing to improve COMAND which desperately needs to be updated. Also consider the fact that BMW has already stated that they have no interest in abandoning their infotainment system for iOS In The Car. BMW is looking into Siri eyes free, but not iOS In The Car that's being talked about here.

I'm not sure if you have played or experienced the latest version of iDrive (updated 5-Series and 6-Series) or COMAND (any current Mercedes), but if you did, you would see why it's highly doubtful BMW would consider it and why it's a no brainer for Mercedes to adopt it.

bmw isn't going to let merc beat them at cabin tech. comand is not the best i agree, however it's miles better than audi's crappy mmi. all those confusing buttons plus turning the controller turns the menu thingy the wrong way.

Again, I would agree with you if iOS In The Car was a full blown OS/replacement infotainment system but it isn't. Having the ability to have your iOS device on the car's infotainment screen isn't exactly innovative or mind-blowing, it's just an extension that isn't going to give Car A an advantage over Car B. iOS In The Car is nothing more than a nice little add-on that requires you to have iOS device and because of that requirement, I don't see how it's going to be a game changer.

As for cabin tech, Mercedes still has a long way to go. Yes they might be the best as luxury, but BMW is way ahead of Mercedes with the electronics and iOS isn't going to shrink that gap.

it might though. airplay in the car sounds like something i need to get my hands on. must people always have their iPhone with them anyway.

I believe iDrive from 2011.5 and newer had A2DP/Bluetooth audio streaming so that function already exists. As for AirPlay specs in cars (using a wireless radio), I don't think that's going to happen so if there was going to be any "AirPlay" feature, it would likely be done via Bluetooth anyway.

I hate how luxury automobile manufacturers always look to iOS first when it only has 20% global market share, where is Android support?!?

/s

It is probably because 90% of luxury-brand cars buyers use iOS and not Android

Fantastic *facepalm* I just took delivery of my E400 hybrid last week.

I just hope Mercedes makes it available for cars that were bought about a month or two before iOS in the Car became available, even if it means paying a fee for it.

Sure... but BMWs are known for suddenly breaking down for no reason due to all those electronics.

I've come across several times at traffic lights where a BMW in front of me would suddenly break down and I give the Beemer driver the troll face from behind the wheel of my Mercedes :)

Aftermarket head units are needed for this to work. Bundling it with a new Ferrari aint going to be a big earner.

I think you have that backwards. Ask Sirius XM how much of a earner aftermarket radios are. Working directly with manufacturers is the only way Apple will make money.

...And I experienced the same thing. All German cars have the same problem with reliability, don't know why people have the need to point out another person's car and their problems. I had a Mercedes and that was junk so I switched to BMW, no problems. My uncle had a BMW and it was junk so he switched to Mercedes.

Audi and VW seem to be pretty reliable though.

That said, my trusty Volvo will still start up after 2 weeks of inactivity, whereas my previous Mercedes (a W211 E320) wouldn't start up if left inactive for 2 weeks (it happened to me after I returned from a long trip out of the country, but my Volvo still started up fine).

Not a fan of BMW at all. Benz is way better in my opinion.

But regardless, in terms of electronics in the dash, tesla seems ahead.

Just bought a 2013 Mercedes CLS350CDi 4 Matic. I hope there will be an upgrade for existing cars...

I hope that they'll make aftermarket systems sooner rather than later... I not only can't afford to buy a new car, but I love the one I've got too much to give it up. :(

I already have IOS in my car. It's called iphone.

True

Part of the problem is that when using hands-free, Siri only works if you press the stupid button. All they would need to do is make it available hands-free.

Of course, that's only half of the Nav. equation, the other being using the cars built in
maps to guide you to where you asked to go, or whatever.

All that other crap isn't that important. Siri is.

Of course it's 'better' to have everything built in. Just saying.

The FT says the announcement will be made at the Geneva Motor Show next week, one of the premier motor shows on the calendar.

It kinda makes sense that Apple would use the Geneva Auto Sho, given that all the OEMs in the first roll-out are European. I wish they had chosen to show up at the Dallas Auto Show last weekend....

As a BMW driver, this annoys me. I *want* iOS in the CAR, and I certainly want it in my BMW. I'll be facing two problems, though, I guess:

1) if BMW doesn't want it, it will be harder for me to achieve
2) the car I want to put it in is not new, so this might be a significant retro-fit

The "good" news in this is that, as long as I am wiling to spend the money to get it done, someone out there will be willing to take the money.

Yeah, I own several classics. I like 'em all better than any of the new stuff. I believe that the aftermarket manufacturers will see this as a marketing point and that the major brands will all eventually add something. We just need to wait. Unfortunately, I can also see these new head units costing a lot of $$$ and more than likely will require cutting up the dash in a classic (not gonna do it).

The LaFerrari is already sold out

Yeah, both of them!

"The deal marks the first time that Apple is embedding its software in devices other than its own branded products."

No it doesn't. Apple had a clone licensing program with System7 in the 90s that was terminated in 1997 when Jobs returned to Apple.

Apple even paid $100Million for Power Computing Company in order to shut down the clone business which they established.

UMAX still was licensing OS8 from Apple until 1998.

Seriously, I often think that most articles about Apple are written by people who didn't know apple existed until the iPod.

What, it's not like Apple was founded in, like, 1984. What-EVAR! /s
