Apple has seemingly leaked the rumored next-generation Mac mini with five USB-C ports, according to a code change within Apple software that was discovered today by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris.

The code refers to an unreleased Mac mini model with an Apple silicon chip and five ports, which lines up with a previous report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman that said the next Mac mini will be equipped with five USB-C ports. Similar to the Mac Studio, Gurman said two of the ports will be located on the front of the new Mac mini. Technically speaking, at least some of these ports will likely be Thunderbolt 4 ports, which use the USB-C connector design.

The exact string is "Apple silicon Mac mini (5 Port)."

Gurman expects the Mac mini to receive its first major redesign since 2010 this year. He said the new model will be nearly as small as an Apple TV, feature M4 and M4 Pro chip options, and lack the USB-A ports included on previous models. The current Mac mini was released in January 2023 and has four Thunderbolt 4 ports and two USB-A ports, along with an HDMI port, Gigabit Ethernet port, and a headphone jack.

The next Mac mini is rumored to be announced at Apple's next event in October, alongside some other M4 Macs and a new iPad mini.

Our image above is merely a mockup of what a smaller Mac mini might look like.

A bit strange to use "5 Port" as a descriptor. Hopefully, this doesn't mean there will be models with fewer ports.
One would assume that an M4 and M4 Pro model would have different port counts on account of the bandwidth limitations. But you never know. They might choose to have a the same number of USB-C ports with different numbers being Thunderbolt enabled. Similar to the front ports on a Studio.

As long as it also has ethernet and HDMI, might be usable. But 5 ports without is not usable at all.
With the iMac ethernet is an add-on. With Apple TV it is also an add-on. You can't guess what Apple might do with the mini. My G3 iMac (Blueberry) had a USB keyboard with a port on either side for the mouse.
I still use old an old USB keyboard from 2010 and USB mouse from 2008. (Windows)
I don't care if they are rechargeable. I still want a battery free option.
My 2007 iMac was Bluetooth and ate batteries like candy.

ehhh... most power users have thunderbolt docks right, those usually have networking (and USB-A ports) built in.

Right. The current Pro mini has 4 USB-C, 2 USB-A, HDMI, 10Gb Ethernet, and a headphone jack. If you want to replace all of that with USB-C/Thunderbolt, fine, but then give us the same number of ports to hold all the dongles. Every single one of these so-called "hubs" suck in some way particular to that model of hub.
