Sure you should, at the low end. Plus it would make no sense to build a Mini larger and more costly just to fit all the low-bandwidth USB-A connections many users have. It is easy and cheap to add powered docks, switches and hubs that suit individual needs, and Minis are desktop boxes so adding custom inexpensive peripherals is logical and cost effective. If adequate bandwidth is available.

What really matters are available bandwidth and available RAM, and no one here has discussed either. I would buy a Mini in a heartbeat, but I consider 64 GB RAM the minimum appropriate for me for the next five years.
Lets get serious for a minute. The ports are not that big. Make the computer big enough to include them... Seriously. A dock shouldn't be necessary on a desktop computer for the vast majority of use cases. Even just one USB-A port would be ok. But to not have any is ridiculous.

I really HOPE it is not that thick. (That's not what she said)

Apple has seemingly leaked the rumored next-generation Mac mini with five USB-C ports, according to a code change within Apple software that was discovered today by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris.

M4-Mac-mini-Black-Ortho-Cooler.jpg

The code refers to an unreleased Mac mini model with an Apple silicon chip and five ports, which lines up with a previous report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman that said the next Mac mini will be equipped with five USB-C ports. Similar to the Mac Studio, Gurman said two of the ports will be located on the front of the new Mac mini. Technically speaking, at least some of these ports will likely be Thunderbolt 4 ports, which use the USB-C connector design.

The exact string is "Apple silicon Mac mini (5 Port)."

Gurman expects the Mac mini to receive its first major redesign since 2010 this year. He said the new model will be nearly as small as an Apple TV, feature M4 and M4 Pro chip options, and lack the USB-A ports included on previous models. The current Mac mini was released in January 2023 and has four Thunderbolt 4 ports and two USB-A ports, along with an HDMI port, Gigabit Ethernet port, and a headphone jack.

The next Mac mini is rumored to be announced at Apple's next event in October, alongside some other M4 Macs and a new iPad mini.

Our image above is merely a mockup of what a smaller Mac mini might look like.

Unpopular comment: 2024, the year to save your hard earned cash to see what happens next year. 😁
Honestly if I knew next year’s M5 is 2nm (there are rumors about A19 being 2nm but I would take it with a grain of salt) or comes with much faster LPDDR6, then sure, I’d wait. But to be fair, being on a non supported Intel Mac mini, I think it is already time to jump to Apple Silicon, especially with the new design.

With the iMac ethernet is an add-on.
Wow, I knew Tim Cook stooped so low, but even I wouldn't have guessed that he would stoop as low as to remove the Ethernet port from a desktop computer and then charge customers extra for it.

If someone is incompetent enough to allow the removal of the Ethernet port from a desktop computer, then he obviously should not be the CEO of a computer company.

There are people that will never leave the Apple ecosystem and will pay whatever Apple ask.

Tim “dont be poor” Cooks knows this and will continue doing it.

I mean, who the hell can get away with a 8GB ram upgrade for $200?

Take it easy Scott. I'm no fan of Tim Apple either, but it's only the base iMac, and only a $30.00 add-on. All of them have wi-fi built in. The mid tier and upper tier options both have ethernet.

You choosing not to use a dock is a you issue. I plug one cable into my MacBook, which is connected to a dock with every connection I need
But that is the point, when you use a MacBook as a desktop machine you know that you are going to have some trade offs and that is one of them. You should not have those tradeoffs with a desktop computer.

why does it matter? If a dock is hidden away under a desk you’re not going to notice it. Or you could get a monitor with a built in hub.

It’s still better than wasting space on ancient USB A ports and such. Besides, if you want ports get a Mac Studio

Oooh, still sounds nice! If it still doesn't have built-in Ethernet and HDMI, that's not too much a problem, because then I can still use my CalDigit TS3 Thunderbolt 3 dock with it like when I use my M1 MacBook Air in clamshell mode. But I do hope on the Pro model, there will be three Thunderbolt/USB-C ports, as two "regular" USB-C ports would still be fine for my uses. (Then maybe once I buy a new 4K display, I can get a USB-C monitor from Dell or LG or Samsung to use with it!)

not small form factor pcs, hello external graphics cards, but ok
If a power user is doing a small form factor build, the build will still include what they need - graphic cards can fit into small form factors, the mac mini and reliance on a SoC is obviously different and it's not like you can build your own mac anyway but that's besides the point (before you say mac pro that really doesn't count).

On the contrary, based on the Apple's control over suppliers, customer retention, its financials and stock yield, seems like Tim has been pretty competent as a CEO, that's not to say I'm a fan of $200 upcharges for memory or storage that costs $10.

I actually avoided Apple products like the plague for years exactly because of it's business practices of high app store margins, absurd markups, obsessive lifestyle and imagery marketing approach, among other things (façade of simplicity for the layperson users hiding certain features and functions, restricting user control, etc, etc) but a family member gave me a free iphone and here I am 🤣

You can't deny the success of the company under Tim's leadership even if some of that was riding the wave of Steve's legacy.

Has anyone done a mockup to see if you can put 3 thunderbolt ports ,hdmi & Ethernet on the back of the Apple TV , plus the power cord

A previous Apple TV had one usb c port in the back , but they removed that port I think
If the new Mac mini is the same size as the Apple TV
In addition, there needs to be a vent for the fan, especially for the M4pro version that will be pumping out more heat.

My M2 Pro Mac Mini has 4 USB-C ports in the back, one of which I've connected to a 4 port USB-A/4 port USB-C hub. Do I need this new Mac Mini?

🤷‍♂️I want a desktop machine that’s small so I can use it in multiple locations as a raspberry pi type device. I don’t need it to be massive so I can get ancient USB A ports. More USB C is way more useful

If you want ports, get a Mac Studio

So you’re getting what you want so it’s a good product?

That’s kind of how it reads

The changes don’t suit my needs so it’s a bad product.

See we can both do that .. lol

I also have the M2 Pro Mac Mini with 6 usb ports, and I am asking the same question, but darn I want the new M4 Pro MM....especially in the new for factor. All my previous Mac Minis have looked pretty much identical. It's time for a change.

Macs are rarely worth upgrading on every cycle. I'm on an M1 mini and will probably order this one. Especially since I need the media encoders and better HDMI port (there was no M1 Pro mini).

I say wait until the M6 mini.

So get a studio. It’s essentially the same device but with even MORE ports! And power

Mac mini has always been a budget entry level Mac. Not really made for power users such as yourself

Equip it with M4 Max and price it at $999 then I'll buy one to toy around with. No reason it should be priced more than ~$1600 SFF PC that's twice as fast if not more.

Then why are they offering the current one with up to 32gb ram, an Apple M2 Pro with 12‑core CPU, 19-core GPU, up to 8TB storage, and a 10gb ethernet...all for a grand total of...wait for it

Doesn't look entry level budget friendly to me...Looks like something that would be right at home on a power users desk

If I had to choose just one pointer device, I’d choose a mouse—I just find it faster and more precise. But why choose? My favourite setup (on a desktop) is to use both at the same time—right hand mouse, left hand trackpad. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else with that setup, but it works for me. 🙂
Yeah, I have a mouse and trackpad but use both on right hand. Incapable with left to be precise. I know that’s a good skill for brain power and long life though!!! Like brushing one’s teeth with their non-dominant hand. Cheers.
