Somehow this will be really bad news for Apple in CNN Money, just give them a few minutes

Under Steve Jobs, "disruptions" were years apart.

Now Tim Cook's Apple (and no other company on Earth) is expected to release a "disruptive" product every three months or the company will be a smoking hole in a year :p

Pretty much.

No doubt. Last week the Mötley Fool ran a piece that said lukewarm reviews for the Galaxy S4 were bad news for Apple.

Remember, no. 1 position is a poisoned chalice as from there the only direction is down. Therefore all the naysayers will be willing Apple to the top.

In reviewing the Fortune 500 top 7 list several things pop out.

Ranking them by profits it is
1 Exxon Mobile $44.88B
2 Apple $41.73B
3 Chevron $26.18B
4 Wal-Mart $17.00B
5 Berkshire $14.82B
6 Government Motors $6.19B
7 Phillips 66 $4.12B

Apple has by far the highest profit per revenue ratio. Apple's profit is very close to the highest in the list, and notably about 3x the profit of the largest revenue company Wal-Mart, which has 3x the revenue as Apple making it 1/9 as efficient!

Rocketman

Ranking the top 7 in profits/revenue. ie how much out of each revenue dollar is profit we get (ie profit cents to each revenue dollar):

1. Apple - 0.266
2 Chevron - 0.111
3 Exxon Mobil - 0.099
4 Berkshire Hathaway - 0.091
5 General Motors - 0.040
6. Wal-Mart Stores - 0.036
7 Phillips 66 - 0.024

I think that's right. If not it's only out buy a factor or 10 or similar. The ranking and numbers would be the same. Only the decimal point would change.

And to everyone saying Apple are doomed. This proves that despite higher lower revenues Apple is actually doing much better then any other of the top 7.

I will. :D

I mean, why the hell would Apple want to target the low-end market? It's not something they've ever done (iPod shuffle, Mac mini?), and they shouldn't do it. If they make a low-cost iPhone, it signifies the death of Apple's core values and I'll definitely switch to Android. :D

Apple has always been a company which targets the wealthy and it works well. Sell to the have's because the have-not's will not be replacing their "iDevices" everytime a new one is released.

Apple is swimming in money. Even the life rafts are made of dough.

Good to hear how rich they are getting. They better give their execs a huge raise because they deserve it when you look at the profit they are making.

Swimming in money like this?

Why would a South Korean company be on the list of "America's largest corporations?

ooooooooooooops forgive meeeeeeeeee

I looked up the Global 500 for 2012. Samsung was actually ranked higher than apple, but here are the revenue and profit stats:

Samsung: revenue 148,944 and profit of 12,059
Apple: revenue of 108,249 and profit of 25,922

these stats came out last July so it'll be interesting to see where they are come July

The problem is, Apple is making too much money and they don't have enough debt to survive long term. The only way they can make it, is if they stop making stuff people want and start selling ugly products that smell bad.

The ugly/bad smelling market is under represented in manufacturing circles. Everyone wants to make the good stuff. Apple needs to stop following the crowd and innovate.

It is getting to the point where the people complaining about the doomsayers is actually outnumbering the doomsayers themselves. Do not think there is one legitimate doomsayer in this thread. Every success article is slowly filling with folks complaining about this mythical doomsayer who never appears. Getting quite sad really.

What? Samsung didn't make the list?
I thought we could comment them to the top :)

Herped when ya shoulda' derped most likely.

The doomsayers are doomed! it is the end of doom saying!!! Run, run for your life!!!!!!!!!

I don't think Apple is doomed, but at the same time I think it will never be the same without Steve as the genius/maniac visionary that got Apple to where it is by sheer force of will. You simply can't replace people like this. Gates leaving MS has had a similar effect. You take a visionary away from the everyday business of making ground breaking technology it simply won't sustain. I've heard all the rumors Apple had 5 years of devices laid out before Steve's passing, and maybe that's true, maybe it's not. The bottom line is Apple will never be the same company it once was.

Every company reaches it's pinnacle and then plateau's out or begins a decline. Apple can maintain its financial's if they continue to put out quality products and keep up with the market. They are no longer leading the tablet and smartphone markets from an innovation stand point. They have a set forumla for profits and stick to it, good for them not so much for consumer choices.

Ive is an amazing designer, but Jobs was the visionary that put Apple atop the mountain. Staying there is going to be a whole new challenge that I'm not convinced Tim Cook can maintain. Those shoes are simply to large for anyone to fill.

Apple missed a huge opportunity with their new campus design. If they covered the entire courtyard at the center of the building, we could say here and forever with total accuracy that Apple is domed.

Lame attempt at a joke.

I guess there will always be people like you trying to compare companies, especially when it comes to Apple.

Where does this notion come from that people would be displacing Macs or iOS devices every time Apple releases some new product? Anyone doing that either (1) is very organised and manages to sell the old product at a good price before buying a new one, (2) has too much money, (3) is absurdly insecure so they have to be seen with a new product all the time, or (4) several of the above.

Based on your posting history you are one of the biggest hater/doomsayers on this forum, constantly hyping Samsung products, bashing anything Apple. The big question is why your type joins a forum like this one in the first place.

I don't think I have once proclaimed any doom. No one really does anymore. The only time you see "doom" in a post is from some guy whining about mythical forum "doomsayers".

Also I do not hype Samsung products nor do I bash all Apple products. I discuss tech.

Stay classy :)
