Yup, noticed this too. I think many online publications have lost the concept of quality editing. They just want to rush content out to get hits. Sad.

And for them to use the words twice in the article... clearly the author doesn't understand what "rigid" means, unless it means something other than what we all think it does?

Maybe Apple has invented something new??? haha

I did not make up the term "rigid flexible." It's what this particular PCB is called. It's an "RFPCB," or "rigid flexible printed circuit board." As someone already explained, it's a PCB that uses both flexible and rigid technologies for better space management.

This launch is in trouble.
It may very well be in trouble. Or it may not. But with every bottleneck rumor people ask why a company with Apple's resources can't just solve it. We'll, here is one where throwing money at the problem actually can make it go away.

It's because of trying to fit everything into a tiny space, interconnected by many flexible cables.

The problem with those connections is that they are a weak spot.

Rigid-flex solves that problem by making the flexible sections actually be part of the rigid circuit sections. Thus it becomes really one long or multi-arm circuit, with no connectors to accidentally come apart after a bump, or to fail with bad solder joints, etc.

On the downside, that means board replacement involves a bigger circuitry section.
I've learned something today.

This "might" help.

Definition of rumor

  1. 1 : talk or opinion widely disseminated with no discernible source

  2. 2 : a statement or report current without known authority for its truth

  3. 3 archaic : talk or report of a notable person or event

  4. 4 : a soft low indistinct sound

Apple's stock will take a temporary hit if the iPhone 8 launch is delayed. Apple stock will take a huge, long term hit if it is launched, and it sucks.

But how do we know if it is delayed, if Apple hasn't published a launch date? Wait, Apple hasn't even announced that there will be an iPhone 8?

This steady drip of production issues with the iPhone 8 does not bode well for the launch

Doesn't it seem a little surprising that there have been no pics of screens, logic boards, etc. It seems awful late to not have any of those leaked yet. Maybe Apple really is keeping things under wraps.

The practice of developing (or buying) your own production gear and then leasing it to the companies who are subcontracted to produce the parts is not at all unusual and something that BMW has done on the car front for decades. It means the subcontractors don't have the worry about under-utilised assets when production plans are changed, and it allows the customer company (Apple, BMW) to make design changes without having to involve the production company and the lack of secrecy that involves.
Ah, kinda rigid-flexible out-insourcing, so to say

Yes, most people here got it wrong.
This is a controlled leak as to lower expectations to such elementary level that people will accept any kind of mehpgraded iPhone 6 shaped thing that can run half a day on a battery as the Anniversary Device.
Because we dummy customer herds, we are not supposed to think by ourselves like "Hey, why didn't they apply this to AirPod production if it is common business practice as that has been lame for half a year."
Or "Hey, this is lunatic as they are being led by that legendary provisioning CEO who runs his company from conferences and during travels with an iPad in his hand..and a monkey dancing iTunes SVP, so everything must be under control."
Instead we slavery buying sheep should stop thinking and just debug the truckloads of beta software like we are supposed to do to satisfy our appetite for innovation - taking up their work while relativating our own severe quality expectations.
Behave as Apple instructed in the 1984 Orwell video, and everything launched before the end of 2018 will be a positive surprise.

I feel like this is also going to be very difficult to manufacture. Sounds like the technology and innovation involved are going to be a pain to produce. Either they really doubled down on part leaks or they're really having a tough time manufacturing.

another possibility-- you don't know what a rigid flexible circuit board is.
??

probably shouldn't be trying to attempt to ridicule the author though because you're making yourself look bad.

not new.. maybe around 20 years old now..
and not invented by Apple.

Next years revision sounds like the one to get or the year after. If there are significant discounts on the Jet Black 7 Plus, I am going to get that instead.
