These are contractors, not employees. There is no obligation to do anything.

The law would apply just the same regardless of who their employer were, Apple or Apple’s supplier. The obligation just lies with Apple’s supplier, not Apple.

It’s ironic how they opened the new Apple campus right before the pandemic and since then have never been able to fully utilize it. The concept behind it was to allow for spontaneous interactions between employees. But now many employees apparently don’t want to return, preferring to work from home. I wonder if the building will ever be utilized in its intended way.

Since we are in a recession, this just makes sense.
They're slowing hiring because interest rates were increased, i.e., no more bond sales that provide billions in free money from the government.

Only if they were let go from the contractor’s organization. These individuals could just as easily be reassigned to other work. And, generally speaking, there is no expectation of severance for contractors with the contracting company. Regardless, in the US there is no requirement to do it in any case. https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/wages/severancepay

I could not locate an instance internationally where a contractor, when contract is terminated, is given a severance unless part of the contract. That would partially defeat the whole point of using contractors.

Two weeks additional pay? The US is wild sometimes. Even in Mexico you get 3 months+ pay when u get let go. Here in Germany I have a 6 months notice
That's why the US unemployment rate is consistently lower than in Germany.

It is. But it would be something to see if even Apple wasn't (global) recession/inflation proof and their tactic backfired. Once people realise that £200 Android phone "does what they need out of a smartphone" fine they might not come back...
So again, business 101?

The 100 recruiters laid off are not full-time Apple employees but only contractors that typically receive less pay and less attractive benefits compared to full-time staff.
I was wondering if they were in-house, or some external staffing agency. Looks like it's somewhere in between.

They are probably starting with slimming down the fat that doesn't want to go back to the office using Covid as an excuse. Let the layoff onslaught throughout the job sector across America begin. All those people that roll their eyes when you ask them for a packet of ketchup are next lol.

Horrible for the people being let go 😢

Does go to show you how spooked Big Tech now is about what's coming though. High inflation. Stalling economies. Chip shortages and the like.
They are contractors. Depending on the company they could still be paid while the company is placing them with another company. Now, if they get fired from their contractor, that’s different.

Will this come back to bite them in the ass (or Phil's 😆?) when the expertise at selecting 'Apple' people has been lost, and future recruits are not a great fit for the company?
They weren’t even Apple employees. :) And, apparently, current recruits are not a great fit for the company either! Was it because of these contractors?!?

It will. If the folks that wanted to continue working from home were a significant number of Apple employees, they wouldn’t be asking them to go back to work. Apple has, I think, between 30 and 40 thousand employees in California, most of them likely in Cupertino. MAYBE 5,000, likely less, don’t want to go into an office anymore and they may temporarily let those jobs go with the employee that had them… and pick them back up when they’re hiring again.

Apple has been selling previous, and previous to previous year phones at discounts for ten years now.

There is a really weird glee people have for Apple failing; a company they supposedly like because otherwise why would they haunt a Mac site.
Where did I show “glee”? Our economy is failing and the public can’t afford basics. I couldn’t be more chagrin.
