There is a really weird glee people have for Apple failing; a company they supposedly like because otherwise why would they haunt a Mac site.

Yeah... somehow that makes some people feel good inside. A kind of "sticking it to the man" sort of glee accompanied with a tiny burst of power that's otherwise lacking.

Of course that little bump of feel-good power doesn't last very long. And then it's back to being perpetually unhappy again.

Where did I show “glee”? Our economy is failing and the public can’t afford basics. I couldn’t be more chagrin.
I'm not so sure. My parents, who are retired, just got back from two weeks on Maui. They said the airplane was jammed, the airport was jammed, the rental car agency was jammed, the roads were jammed, the restaurants were jammed, the shops were jammed, the pool was jammed, cheapest menu items are $30+. Worst they've seen in 20 years of going there.

Here in my neck of the woods the weekend traffic up to the lakes and mountains is as bad as ever even with gas over $4. Even at Saratoga the handle is at an all-time high. https://dailygazette.com/2022/07/18/saratoga-sees-opening-weekend-jump-in-handle-and-attendance/

“It was a crazy opening weekend for everyone in Saratoga,” Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce President Todd Shimkus said Monday. “The hotels definitely did well this weekend. Advanced bookings were very strong heading into the opening weekend. The reality is, with hospitality, where people stay is where they spend their money.”

“Everything that’s happening at the track in terms of higher paid attendance that spills over into overnight stays,” Shimkus said. “That translates to shopping and dining and just all around having a good time here, which means spending money.”

I think not everyone is hurting as much as complaining about high prices.

Which, not coincidentally, is why nearly all available work in the US anymore is “contractor” work…
Which leaves everything to negotiation. A person who agrees to be a contract worker needs to negotiate a good deal. Although I have certainly seen plenty of non contract work available as well.

Yeah probably an exaggeration but my point is most of these people don’t have a better deal to take because all the other work is “contract” too.

And I don’t mean people who are entrepreneurs or work in professional contract based fields. I mean basically everything anymore. Especially since the ACA many companies now only hire people on 10-99.

That’s what I really mean. No benefits, you’re not an employee, but you have to act like one in every way but the legal protections afforded to them.

America plays this cat and mouse game of guaranteeing benefits, then finding ways around providing them.

You’d think they’d keep the recruiters to find new developers when the ones they’re trying to force into the office leave.

check out median net worth and credit card debt of average American. We have a society built on cheap food, fuel, fiber, tech, and cheap and easy credit. That is all at an end. Most are delusional and remind me of a child whistling in the dark. The economy is not well and it takes years to hit bottom. Tech may accelerate this recession though.

The same thing could have been said in 2008. It is not all at an end. People have money burning holes in their pockets from staying home for two years during the pandemic.

It took ten years to recover from 2008
