will help developers of reader apps make it easier for users to set up and manage their apps and services

How? How will this make them easier to manage? I’d think that decentralization will have the farthest-opposite effect, making it more difficult to manage. In fact, I get upset, perhaps unreasonably so, when apps specifically refuse to offer in-app subscriptions.

Maybe, just maybe, it could’ve worked out that Apple could have decoupled the iTunes billing system from their platforms, made it into a form of services revenue, and give consumers direct and transparent choice and control over how to pay for their purchases, such as developers “exposing” the 30% cut with their own payment method, while at the same time offering iTunes billing for convenience’s sake.

that puts us right back at square one of this debacle…

get over yourself. macOS allows sideloading and malware have not shutdown that business side for apple
Because Mac marketshare makes it a less attractive target for malware makers.

But, shockingly, if you tripled or quadrupled the marketshare, and loaded everyone’s device with extremely sensitive personal information—photos, detailed location info, credit card info, addresses, telephone numbers, etc etc—guess what would happen?

like apple dont have numerous dodgy apps stealing people's money. blah blah, MR has reported on this many times this year alone
yeah they do. But they don’t have nearly the number that The play store has, nor do they have the “we are logging your keystrokes and stealing your bank info” variety. In the epic lawsuit, the numbers came out, and playstore had MANY TIMES more malware than App Store.

Right, so because it happens a little bit on the App Store, who cares if we just let it ****ing rip and quadruple the amount of stealing. We already snorted one line, let’s go on a bender.

more concessions from apple will unravel in coming months, they are saving face atm, from anti-trust cases thrown at them at every direction worldwide, EU will hit them the hardest lol.

Cool. I’m sorry your app sucks—you should care more about your users.

True... there are examples of "money stealing" apps in Apple's App Store. Unfortunately.

But what happens when the money stuff happens NOT in the App Store... but on some other website?

Let's say there's a hot new game... the next Flappy Bird or whatever... and they have a link to their website to buy a "Premium Subscription" to the game to get upgrades or whatnot.

And the developers of that game are such fine people that they trick you into subscribing to WEEKLY payments.

If that happens in the App Store... you tell Apple and they fix it.

But good luck getting in touch with someone in Ghana or Nigeria. You'll have to cut up your credit card to stop the damage.

Bad guys are already lining up for this.

Once you move the cash register out of Apple's store... there are all kinds of scams that could happen.

:(

Wait... Apple wants to stop all these anti-trust investigations... not have new ones started...

;)
Steve Jobs saw all of this **** coming. We need to return to the good ol days: Only first party apps can be natively installed. Everyone else needs to be chained to a PWA.

Forgive me if I don‘t hold my breath for Netfix, etc. to lower fees paid direct, lulz!
Exactly. I had already subscribed to Netflix from their webpage several years ago, it was like $7 CAD if I remember correctly. Just recently got the latest bill, $18.62 CAD after taxes, getting closer to 3 times the amount it started with… but hey, a great thing that mean evil Apple has released its iron grip and we can go back to $7 right? The consumer won right?

We all know it's going to happen. The status quo was never going to be allowed forever. If security is an issue for the consumer continue with IAP, or vote with your wallet. And if security is a wider issue they'll have to sort out some sort of payment certification. I'm sure they'll figure it out.

But choice is good for consumers. Its not good for Apple and Google which is why they're unhappy. I find this bizarre loyalty to these mega corporations really weird.

exactly how is this good for consumers? Just repeatedly saying it doesn’t explain it. We know prices won’t go down. We know it will be harder to dispute charges, cancel services, etc.

So how is it good?
