Apple made a smart move during their presentation, in my opinion. They showcased all new systems without the AI Stuff first (never even said it once) and then after that the AI Stuff. For me that seems like they still develope their systems without deep AI integration in mind and just put the whole AI thing on top of that, while still maintaining the impression it is deep embedded. I bet you can disable it entirely and never notice a thing.

Additionally, Google pays Apple a substantial amount of money to remain the default search engine on iPhones. Naturally, Google wants this "arrangement" to extend to AI features as well.
Makes me assume the negotiations thus far between Google and Apple haven't been going great. Apple will be well aware that Microsoft is propping up OpenAI, that ChatGPT uses Bing to search, that Gemini is much safer/more woke etc.

OpenAI has a habit of not exactly operating in a sustainable manner. I guess their deal with Apple are not terms Google would ever find acceptable.

The world has changed my friend.

When our neighbours across the pacific don’t even have those P and C words in their vocabulary, we need to adapt to compete.
Yes, the world has changed. We disagree on what that means, though. You see this as an ”if you can’t beat them, join them”, I think the fight has only begun. There is no reason we should just lay down and accept that only low tier manual labor and AI operator jobs will survive. That’s a choice we get to make.

We will have to wait and see. The presentation is marketing, it may have little to no relation to what happened in development in another department at Apple.

A smart person could have just decided that to give the impression the AI features are not embedded deep within the OS. The reality could be very different.

I guess we will find out sooner or later

While Cook‘s vision had him busy pouring money down the Apple Car and VP drains AI left them in the dust. Apple is so far behind the curve they have to resort to buying canned AI.

I mean, there has to be some kind of separation between the "core" OS and the AI features because they are, at least initially, region-locked to the US. I guess that wouldn't be possible if the integration runs deep into the system.

How will it be different from Apple using Google Maps back in the days then, eventually getting burnt by Google?

Are Apple trying to get as many AI platforms on board as possible? Are they working on their own in parallel and using ChatGPT, Gemini, etc. as temporary gap fillers?

It's weird, people have been complaining for years that Apple is late in AI, that Siri is dumb and needs AI, that AI features on other devices like Samsung are so cool compared to Apple.

ChatGPT had the fastest growing user-base in history, and everybody seems to love generative AI for everything including writing, photo editing or image generation.

But now that Apple introduced these feature, all of a sudden everybody hates AI 🤔
We have entered an era of eternal complaining. 99% of the posts here (but also on any other social platform) are not about reason but about emotional dysregulation masking as such.

iOS 18 is a monumental update in my opinion, but people are not getting better at appreciating anything these days.

Regardless of checks and balances, Apple uses AI as way to reinvigorate iPhone sales by forcing customers to upgrade.

Yes they even said during the Keynote, that they want to add other models, too. I think it is as @GrayFlannel said:

They are working on their own, but are so far behind, that they had to revert to adding third-party plattforms until their own plattform is good enough to replace them.

Anyone who knows Apples history will know that more than any company, Apple has benefited from an emotional connection between its customers and the business and its people.

The emotions are both positive and negative, or a combination. No other company has such a dedicated subset of customers or culture that come anywhere near like it.

For Apple, this just means more money. They didn’t curate it, but they know it’s good for business.

It’s why forums like this exist….

Apple sales and marketing love this emotional dysfunction 😆

Federighi said that Apple's decision to start with ChatGPT was because the company wanted to "start with the best."
"So why aren't they starting with us?" is probably what some out-of-touch executives at Google might be thinking right now. :p

Speaking of not-the-best AI models, I wonder if Apple will give the option to use xAI's Grok, just to help Elon Musk feel better?

Apple threw the baby out with the bath water

“It stays on the device” is only gonna hold up so much for getting a blind pass and no further scrutiny

Google’s … Gemini? For real?!
A lot of the most personal things we use our phones for are not on device…

Calls, banking, web services….

Some of these use advanced encryption and other security features. Just because something is “on device” doesn’t mean it’s any more safe than off device. At the end of the day your iPhone is connected to the internet almost its entire operating life.

Sounds more like current apple maps to me. Much of the data in apple maps is licensed from others. If openai wont play, no biggie as apple just needs to license more providers to cover the gaps.

Apple Intelligence*

*Using other AI models.

Apple missed the AI train. They don't "skate to where the puck is going to be" like back when Steve ran the show.

AI (as it is today) is a scam aimed entirely at corporations/CEOs looking for a magic cancerous forever growth solution.

"I am utterly disgusted." - Hayao Miyazaki on the use of AI

I will not be updating any of my apple device's OSs. Luckily I kept 2 of my last 2 Hackintoshes. If Apple has a poison pill in their Apple Silicon desktops to force updates I will sadly sell my Mac Studio M2 Max.

so which features use the plugin? I assume without enabling a 3rd party model there are new SIRI capabilities?
I would presume that almost all of the features Apple showed off in the keynote use their own models (or models they licensed from outside sources and run on-device or on their servers).

ChatGPT and other AI plugins seem to be used mostly when Siri is thrown a curveball question. So I don't think there's necessarily a clear delineation, especially since I would expect Apple to continue updating and improving their models over time.

It wouldn't surprise me if plugging into third party models is a stopgap while Apple continues improving their own models and that it will be 100% Apple at some point in the future.

I believe Apple's approach is a good one, develop their own models for everyday use across all apps and if you really do want to use other AI interfaces such as ChatGPT then you will be asked. I would prefer in settings to turn off being asked whether I want to use 3rd party AI models, as what Apple is providing will do for me 95% of the time. Using Apple Intelligence I know my privacy is protected, if it was ever found that our privacy was not being protected then that would be the end of Apple.

OpenAI and Microsoft don't care about our privacy and will do their best as Facebook does to get around it until somebody such as the EU raps them on the knuckles.

I like the idea of ”on machine” intelligence but am very wary of my devices being connected to outside AI. Maybe I am just old fashioned.

What could go wrong? 🤬
So don't use it then? I am sure it can either be completely disabled, or when Siri asks, you just say, "no."

Which is why Apple is the only company to handle this correctly. Those of us that are privacy-focused are happy with this.

Well, I will just wait and see how it all goes with my AI-non-eligible iPhone 15 then. 😉

I'm having trouble with the Gemini logo. The Zodiac member is a set of twins, but there's just one star in the logo when the dots on the two i's could've been stars.
