I was shocked to go to the HP website and find out the the "elite" version which has a 1080p display with 250 nits and a a slow i5 10th gen (same 8GB Ram + 256GB SSD) is starting at 1300$ , for some reason I expected them to be much more competitive in price OR performance , now we will see if a new 24 iMac can bring those customers over , or windows are what makes them sticky , as until now the HP machine was a better value then Apple with their 21.5 slow ass Intel CPU offerings for the same price.
Yeah that’s nuts. The M1, while not the power necessarily for the heavy user, is well beyond a 10th Gen Intel i5 and the new iMac has a 4.5K display for just $100 more.

All told, I am getting "used" to the look of the pastel colours and the white bezel. But what I still don't like is the front view of computer and its stand (as shown in the article). It just looks weird. Too narrow and ungainly. Like it is on tip-toes and likely to fall over easily if tipped. It just doesn't look in proportion.

I'd also like to see a photo of what they look like with the display off/black. And how the white bezels and pastel shades work in that situation. In reality, this is how our home iMac spends 90% of its life. Which I suspect is probably true for most casual *home* users too - being only on for a few hours a day.

I am actually surprised Apple are not already the top all in one provider out there with the iMac. Really didn't think the PC world was that 'into' them. Not that I was watching that space.
From working in retail I see PC AIOs drawing customers because of familiarity with Windows 10 and entry price point lower than Apple, particularly when it comes to storage. That said even the current design iMacs still get a lot of positive attention and where almost no one seems to care about bezels or chins.

Was prepared to splashbout and replace the 2011 iMac when these were released. But simply could not being myself to buy something so.... ugly.

Ended up with a Dell for half the price and can upgrade it myself.

So wanted a new imac but the horrible chin and ice cream colours would make me resent buying it every day
You won’t have the monitor the iMac comes with in a less costly Dell

;)

But seriously... I think they will look fine in certain environments. Though I'm really interested in what the bigger iMac will look like.

This video below kinda scares me... I hope Apple doesn't turn the best-selling Macbook Air into this:

I don’t understand why the white bezels are all the sudden a problem.. the iMac G3 all pretty much had white bezels, the iMac G4 and iMac G5 and first intel iMacs all had white bezels. Every version of the iBook had white bezels, the polycarbonate MacBooks had white bezels except for the short lived black version. Several studio and cinema displays also had white bezels.

it makes totally sense. remembering my first iBook ages ago - it just worked with no problems for a very long time. with the now iPhones in masses buying people they will automatically sell them more and more Macs too. iPhones work for a very long time so peoples will go for Mac for the same reason.

I know I’m in the minority (or in a silent majority) but I find these new iMacs stunningly beautiful, white bezels and chin included. The iMac has a chin, get over it.

No wonder they’re gonna sell well.

I like them, i'in the flesh' they still look better than 95% of the competitions (as seems usually the case with Apple products). My only gripe is the pastel shades, I really would've LOVED it had the bold colours from the rear followed through to the stand and accessories too. :/

24 is already a step up from my 21.5, which I’ve been very happy with. The 24 gives you about twenty percent more display. So I don’t feel I really need a 28-30 inch display. I am more curious about what will be offered in terms of RAM and storage and the cost—thats what will help me decide between the 24 and the bigger version.

Out of interest:

1) What sort of upgrades do you envisage making? I'm guessing adding storage and RAM?
2) Why did you choose an all in one? I'm surprised because I'd expect most people to find switching operating system a bigger deal than switching from an AIO to a standalone (like a Mac mini and separate screen)

I don't think you are in the minority. Minority is never silent!
May I add that as soon as reviews are published and these things start to ship to customers you are gonna see a flood of "the most beautiful/elegant design" comments all over the internet. History just keeps repeating itself with Apple's new product designs.

I’m right there with you and I made sure to vote with my wallet. :)
I'm over the chin - I'd rather it wasn't there but it doesn't really bother me. I love the colours. Not a fan of the stand though - I like the old curvy one much more.

Edit: actually, the stand's growing on me too. It mirrors the thin, straight line of the rest of the machine.

Of all the PC companies, these just blow HP out of the water. They've diversified so much that most of their product line isn't worth buying. And that chin, like it or not, probably has better sound than any AOI out there. I think it's a great looking design, but it does kinda look like it could topple over anytime, lol. I never imagined getting AppleCare for a desktop--that would really bump up the base price. Will have to see it in person first

For me the problem is not it having a chin, its a chin without the Apple logo on the front centre, it just looks too plain and wrong without. So long as this is the consumer class iMac and we have the a professional class iMac to come that looks better and maybe has black bezels not white i should be happy.

Not surprised by this. Interesting the products with lower sales numbers (where Apple wouldn't need to be helping fund the factory creation, like they do with iPhone component production) are the ones that will be having component issues as the year goes on - presumably because they are getting the components from the normal marketplace where the crunch is happening.

Since their saying 2nd half of the year, makes me wonder if this is the unreleased m1'd/m2'd iMac 27 and updated non Pro iPad's perhaps or if these are the ones they just updated but are anticipating a crunch as time goes on.

I'm getting used to it, but yeah a nice soft frosted logo would be perfect there. I expect YouTube video's of people taking matters into their own hands and a eBay market for appropriately sized Apple stickers doing the job as well.

I agree. It will look great on my kitchen Island which has a completely white color.
Now that they can run iOS apps and people are putting them on kitchen counters can we PLEASE have a touch screen option? No one wants to pull a trackpad or mouse out of drawer to scroll down on a recipe.

Hi-end chips are not the problem. It's the cheap parts built in ancient technology causing the problems.

Now if a manufacturer says "We have orders for 5 million of these chips and we have only a million, how much are you going to pay", it is quite likely that Apple will be getting their chips. At a cost.
Exactly. If a company has high margins on their finished product (Apple), they can easily hugely outbid a company that competes with low margins (Dell, HP, et.al.) without taking a loss when there are component supply chain delays or shortages. That's for low-end chips (power converters, etc.) For high-end chips, Apple can offer a few Billions (USD) in loans from their cash hoard to build a new fab if they get put at the front of the line.

Totally agree. I’m glad that Apple went back to the colors, as we’ve got enough conventional dark and light metal options out there.

I dislike HP and am surprised that Dell was not part of the gang of 3 in AIO sales.
I bought (for a client) a Dell Inspiron 5000 24" AIO with 11th-gen i7, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD for $791.
That's way cheaper than an equivalent iMac 24.

If the bezel was black and they kept the pastel colors, the contrast would look awful. I would expect a more traditionally colored pro is on the way.

Silver will be available. Still it’s funny how so many are hung up on the idea that a “professional” computer simply has to be a sombre colour. Mind you I can easily see Space Grey with white or light gray bezels.

I manage a fleet of ~200 PC's, over half of which are AIO's. You'd be surprised how often one gets knocked over and the display broken. It's gotten worse in recent years as manufacturers were using a more stable easel-style stand in the past but now the pedestal design has taken over. Not sure why it seems to be limited to AIO's though, haven't had the same happen to any monitors. Weight, maybe?

These will market extremely well to college students, and others, who are trying to integrate computers into their living spaces. They are pretty sharp.

I'd love to see a similarly designed display in different colors that I could hook up to my MBPs...

Definitely weight distribution. Be glad iMacs have a chin and not a forehead!

AIO's are also more likely to be put in areas like reception and classrooms where there is more foot traffic. I've always thought the lampshade design was superior. More flexible screen movement and much more stable.
