I would never buy an all in one.
I suggest people not buy them either.
They are overpriced. If something breaks, more expensive to fix. When you want a new computer you throw everything out.

Hard pass.

I recommend AIO's to non-technical family as it makes my (and their) life easier helping them troubleshoot down the line. No questions about which model webcam will be compatible, calls because there are lines in the monitor after someone knocked the cable loose, why the sound won't work when someone turned down the volume on the external speakers, windows updates causing strange notices because of incompatibilities with their no-name monitor, etc.

iMacs depreciate relatively slowly so even for power users if you don't mind the cycle of selling every 3 years or so and upgrading it's not a bad deal. I do wish Apple would offer a touch screen option and wireless phone charging in the iMac base.

HP simply sells way more PCs than Apple, so even if AIOs represent a small fraction of their overall sales, the absolute number is still higher than the one for Apple.

Yeah, I get that, I just didn't think even those numbers would be as much as Apple has such a large dependency on AIO in the lineup. Oh well, I am sure that will indeed change soon enough.

simply set the criterion as "All-in-One ARM-based PC vendor", then you can safely remove the "Likely"
Deal?
Change it to “All-in-One ARM-based PC vendor for macOS systems” and because Apple has 100% control of that market, you can call it a monopoly!

That’s how monopolies work, right? /s

So, if you include ALL of the devices where folks might buy one of these Apple products instead of HP’s, it’s gets a lot more interesting. :) Actually, I’d bet Apple’s fine with folks continuing to leave the iPad out of PC comparisons. Makes it all the more shocking when they say things like “We sell more iPads than HP sells laptops”!

What you mean like who buys all these disposable Apple devices?

Just in general. Everyone I know avoids them. Why would you throw out the monitor with the computer when the computer gets outdated long before the monitor? As for M1 iMacs, aren't they even more disposable with no replaceable RAM and SSD?

One could say this about laptops, but even more so. And yet I seldom hear that complaint about them. Seems rather arbitrary to me.

For me this design is more of a fashion statement than the appliance look we are used to. I like my apple stuff to look rugged and not like a Baer paint palette from Home Depot. Im sure the 27 and pro versions will come in a darker color scheme

It’s absolutely a fashion statement, just like the original iMac was.

I’m sure there will be a wood-grain and leather iMac coming soon for those that want a rugged-looking computer. It will probably also have a beard on the “chin” on front of the computer.

What I do tend to find is that everyone I come across that has one, has had it for years, it's not so disposable in their eyes when it continues to perform as expected and only needs replaced on their whim. For the majority that is why they like iMac's so much. They last and whether true in reality, the perception is that they continue to operate well no matter how old.

The M1 iMacs are certainly looking completely sealed so yes, more 'disposable' but I don't really think it will impact most users as long as they keep running.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD BE SUPER EASY TO STEAMPUNK BECAUSE YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORRY AS MUCH ABOUT HEAT DISSIPATION????? All brass and cogs and leather and copper tubing and shiny silver in spots…

I have a 2007 iMac that still gets used to play exercise videos and occasionally gets moved to the dining table for family zoom calls on birthdays, etc. Compared to a laptop the screen is so much larger and the speakers are so much louder it's worth it. Compared to a mini with external mic, camera, speakers, and display it is much easier to move around. In 10 years an M1 iMac will feel slow compared to the latest 64 core M10, but it will likely still be a very useful appliance.

I was shocked to go to the HP website and find out the the "elite" version which has a 1080p display with 250 nits and a a slow i5 10th gen (same 8GB Ram + 256GB SSD) is starting at 1300$ , for some reason I expected them to be much more competitive in price OR performance , now we will see if a new 24 iMac can bring those customers over , or windows are what makes them sticky , as until now the HP machine was a better value then Apple with their 21.5 slow ass Intel CPU offerings for the same price.
There”s a very durable meme that says Apple is over priced, however whenever I look at buying a non apple PC with similar specs, it always turns out at a similar price.

Apple's new 24-inch iMac range could help it overtake HP as the leading all-in-one (AIO) computer brand vendor, according to industry sources cited by DigiTimes.

imac-with-accessories.jpg

The prediction is based on evidence suggesting that more affordable all-in-one PC brands are being impacted much harder by the global chip shortage as suppliers prioritize their shipments to support more premium products in the AIO market.
Apple is selling three all-new built-to-order iMac tiers, priced at $1,299, $1,499, and $1,699. All tiers come in several color options and include Apple silicon M1 processors, solid-state storage, 8GB of RAM, and two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports. Pre-ordered iMacs begin shipping from May 21.

According to Digitimes Research, HP was the largest AIO PC brand in the fourth quarter of 2020, shipping 925,000 units, followed by Apple with 860,000 units, and Lenovo with 731,000 units. However, Apple's shipments are estimated to have surpassed HP in the first quarter of 2021.

That said, overall Apple says it expects to be impacted by the chip shortages, and predicts a sequential decline of approximately $3 to $4 billion revenue in the third-quarter of 2021 due to ‌‌iPad‌‌ and Mac supply constraints. Apple says a combination of the shortages and a very high level of demand for both ‌‌iPad‌‌ and Mac is expected to impact revenue in the second half of 2021.

Another poorly outfitted iMac with ONLY 8 GB of RAM. I will wager that the SSD is no more than 500GB.

And the Apple usually has a superior display for the price, but no touchscreen option. Some PCs do have features like a physical webcam cover, a few USB-A ports, and a wireless phone charger that I wouldn’t mind on my next iMac…

For me the problem is not it having a chin, its a chin without the Apple logo on the front centre, it just looks too plain and wrong without. So long as this is the consumer class iMac and we have the a professional class iMac to come that looks better and maybe has black bezels not white i should be happy.
You could put a sticker on it

If I owned a business with a reception area, the new iMac would make a great first impression being front and center! Apple exudes class!

Do you spend much time wandering into strangers homes or walk the halls and floors of office buildings checking out what type of computers they have? I don't understand how what you have seen is a litmus test for how popular PC AIO's are?

fair point, but whenever i see an aio (offices, shops, studios, galleries, people’s homes, mall kiosks, computer labs in schools, anywhere you see computers out and about in the world) it’s an imac

not a bad idea to make some some wood grain and faux leather vinyl stick on imac skins to sell. maybe someone already is ?

All those poor ppl going to the back of their new, state-of-the-art, All-in-One computer to plug something in (almost anything) and being, like "wait, this doesn't fit..."
At least it's super thin, tho! That should be useful in daily use!

Why won’t my parallel cable from my 1987 printer plug into my 2021 computer? Oh the humanity!!!

You were shocked because so many MR regulars love to troll about all things Apple being sooooo expensive—it's the main thing they enjoy soiling themselves over. So it's easy to assume those folks are actually correct. In fact, they're often not. A few years ago I was weighing up an MBP vs a similarly spec-ed Hackintosh laptop (yes, I realized Hackintosh laptops were a nightmare to build!), and I found very little difference, taking all features into account. High-end "ultrabooks" from PC vendors are very expensive. The main difference—and where I could make up a lot of value was on upgrades—the best PC ultrabooks still had some upgradeability on RAM/SSD, whereas the MBP was obviously locked in. That is a truly lame aspect of Apple's pricing—upgrades/bto are overpriced. And of course we've been locked into getting those upgrades from Apple for a few generations now. I really don't understand why they don't consider the value of getting a customer to commit to a high $$$ sale as a "win", and give them upgrades as a kind of "bonus" for the commitment. It seems backwards, to me... I guess they make a good margin on bto, but still... they've got plenty of margin as a company, these days.
